I have been a long time reader and great admirer of Mr. Follett' s works from all his early spy and espionage books to his masterpieces in Pillar's of the Earth, World Without End and his 20th century trilogy! When I noticed Whiteout on Amazon, I couldn't believe there was a Follett book that I had not read!Without to much critiquing, let me just say that in my opinion, this was by far the worst book of his career! I found none of his talent encompassed in this book. Actually, I thought it must have been written by a ghostwriter! As I said, there is no cause to go Into detail for my reasoning. I urge long time Follett readers to engage in this book and draw there own conclusions!

If this book had come with a free sample of the lethal virus, I would have taken it about halfway through. The plot had potential. The end.Worst of all was the character development. Oxenberg came across as a marginally intelligent buffoon, and Toni could have been the protagonist in almost any Danielle Steele "novel".It got that second star because, after all, this is Ken Follett. If you like reading about lethal viruses, pick up any of Richard Preston's books. The Hot Zone is the most well known, but all are great. If you like Ken Follett, pick up....well, anything but this.

A gambling addict and computer genius decides to use his computer skills and knowledge of the security system for a biological laboratory to resolve his gambling debt. The laboratory, owned by his father, was looking for ways to deal with a deadly, incurable virus. The son developed the security system for the laboratory and it was not possible for it to fall victim to compromise ... except by him. When his father stopped covering his gambling losses he became desperate, just as the gambling syndicate intended. The plan seemed simple enough: infiltrate without detection, steal the virus samples and meet the buyers the next day for payoff. Set in Scotland, a minor snowfall prediction turns into a full scale blizzard upsetting the plan resulting in a series of snap decisions that ends up with a hostage situation at the home of the lab’s owner. Twists and turns, colorful and interesting characters and terrorism threats keep the reader turning pages rapidly.

I just finished reading this book, Whiteout. I've been reading hard all day. Good thing I am camping and had no responsibilities. I could not put this down. Instead of chapter titles, Follett put the time..it moved so quickly. I am breathless but fulfilled. Truly this is an epic of a page-turner. A true definition of that.

I was disappointed with this book. It COULD have been a great story, if only he'd left out the teenage "I can't tune out what's going on in my pants" bits. Really? Even though you're in a very dangerous situation right now? I'm no prude, but it was so heavy handed and sloppy that it distracted me from the suspense. After a while, I gave up. Too bad.

I love all of Ken Follett's books. Of all the books I have read of his he never fails to deliver. I have watched him grow up from a very young handsome man to an older, statesman like gentleman who is still handsome and is still a great author. If Follett's books can't hold your attention you must have a problem. He is simply great.

After reading several Follett books, all of which I considered very good, this was adisappointment. The tight timeline did not make sense - to me. And maybe it wastoo many characters - whatever, I had a hard time keeping them straight. In fairness, the plot did make it a good enough read that I finished. One thing to keep in mind - these good authors are smart enough to make the Kindle"sample" intriguing enough to buy the book! And if and when another Follett comes along, I'll go for it. He's one of the fewfiction writers I read all of his books. The other, of course, being Grisham.....

Well done...kept my interest for sure. 4 not 5 stars as the heroine seemed singular in action for the complexities represented in the story. I really liked that the story continued for quite a while after the supposed climax.

We pre-purchased the book because our 10yr old has read each book in the series. When we got the notice that the book would be delivered, he couldn't wait to get it. Once it arrived he ripped open the package then ran to his room to read it. He was done in a day... then all of his friends at school, who saw him reading it, wanted to borrow it.I do have to say, we are fairly avid Anime fans and have got our son hooked on thing like: Totoro, Ponyo (along with other Studio Ghibli titles), Log Horizon, SAO, Magus Bride, etc.; as well as on some of the Manga. I really can't say enough about this series, which I've also read. The world that Kazu Kibuishi crafts is extremely interesting. The message of perseverance after a loss, the importance of family, trusting people of all races, and finding the power within us is a great one for kids and adults. Some parts are are a little dark but not really frightening for younger kids. The story keeps you interested to the last page, then wanting more.

I loved it! It had a lot of dreams, but it was still great. I am 9 years old and I read it in 45 minutes. You really should read them in order. I can't wait for book number 9, but I think it concludes with number 9- so that will be the very end.

Ive been an amulet fan for a while. as you would expect i was very exited to find out there was going to be an 8th book. i preordered the book right away. as i was reading it i realized that not only did this book have unexplained plot points but once navin and the other pilots are greeted they say the same thing that they said in book 5 "your help is greatly apreciated" well in book 5 there military gets destroyed. WHAT DO YOU KNOW the military gets destroyed but in the lamest way possible. All we get to know about how is from an explosion in the background of a tiny screen. If your a amulet fan i recomend passing on this book. i might make a follow up comment later going in more detail about this dissapointing book.

This is the eighth volume in the Amulet graphic novel series. The illustration remains amazing and the story makes some good progress too. I continue to be impressed with how well done this graphic novel series is.In this volume Emily struggles to gain control of her Amulet and escape the Void. Meanwhile Trellis is trying to take his place as rightful king of the Elves. Navin goes to Lighthouse One and leaves on a mission to help protect the worlds against the Shadow forces. The story is moving a bit slow and it jumps between a lot of people and places in this book. However, I am still really enjoying it. At some point I would like to sit down and read all these volumes back to back. Since these books seem to be coming out at the rate of a volume every other year it would be great to have a “story thus far” in the front of these books. There was quite a bit of character development in this series, despite all the jumping around. It was great to see what a force Emily is becoming, and there were some interesting twists around her character in here.Overall this is another great volume in this top notch fantasy graphic novel series. There is only one more volume in this series and I am eager to see how it wraps up!

Some of the words he encountered are new and difficult to sound out, but my kid loves the storyline of the Amulet series, has grown an affinity to certain characters, and happily reads these. He likes the all-dialogue text with illustrations, so graphic novels have become his favorites. Amulet is definitely among the better series he could get into. It’s not silly, it has some good lessons, the adventure is high action with good pacing, and illustrations are phenomenal.

I love this book because it's brighter than 1-7, there are new characters & space! It's very intriguing & my new favorite. I love it when they (spoiler!).... I recommend this book for people who are different than others or believe that girls are powerful or just like SciFi. (Review dictated by a 9 year old)

Continues the good story onwards. It took so long in between no 7 and no. 8 that I forgot all about the original plot. God excuse to read it all again. Hope no. 9 (and final??) does not take as long to publish.

Amulet 7 left us on quite the cliffhanger, and we got quite fidgety this summer waiting for the rest of the story. As of this writing we're just 86 pages in, and no spoilers, but we'll just say that Mr. Kibuishi is outdoing himself! What's gonna happen with Emily?!? Just get the book already! :-D

Following a dear one's life saving yet, changing spinal cord injury, Dr Marcalee Alexander's book has opened significant hope to couple's who understand these modern day life saving procedures often come with great loss involved to personal lives. Dr. Alexander not only offers hope but also answers to improve our lives.

Good read I've been living with Sci for 20yrs and find this book useful. Thanks you for this great info

I was excited to read this new book by Dr. Marcalee Alexander, one of the world's most well-known experts in sexuality following spinal cord injury(SCI). An important thing to remember is that Dr. Sipski cares first and foremost about how people with spinal cord injury feel about themselves as sexual individuals, regardless of the severity of their injury. Many physicians, armed with clinical knowledge, lose the personal touch, but this book is all about the perspective of the person. The information corresponds to that published in the scientific literature and clinical guidelines, but is presented in an easy to read and personal, not-excessively-clinical way. This book is encouraging to people with SCI and takes a "yes you can!", "go for it!" attitude. It is nice and brief; I read it in a single sitting, knowing that I can go back to different pieces later when I need to. I highly recommend it for physicians, psychologists, persons with SCI, and their partners.

For me I absolutely loved this story. I had purchased on my kindle for a while before actually starting to read it but when I did I couldn't put it down. It was an interesting read because the take on the main character being blind and having a very sheltered upbringing lead her down a rocky path when she actually gained her eyesight back after her parents death. She was thrown for a loop from here and had to get herself together quick. With her only mentors then dead it left her to figure out a lot of things on her own, which sometimes meant trusting the wrong person by letting her unexplained emotions get the best of her. This series has such a different take on the whole werewolf/supernatural genre and I loved it. When I finished this book I immediately started reading the second book in the series. I happen to enjoy the characters as it seems the author develops them in a way that leaves so much more room for their character to build.

Not at all what I expected - on Kindle but no cover so the story was a complete surprise. Very well done except I have one little quibble - the girl is a bit too vacillating, loving/hating/running away from/to ... it's a bit tiring. That being said, however, the writing was excellent with only a lew little typos that a thorough proofread would fix (remember spellcheck doesn't fix words correctly spelled but used incorrectly). Still well worth reading.

I had no idea what this book was about going into it and I really enjoyed seeing how this story unfolded. It was fun being in the dark along with the main character, asking the same questions she was asking and being right there with her as information was slowly revealed. This is the story of Ruby, a 28-year-old woman, who mysteriously survived a brutal attack that killed her parents. She had lived a very sheltered life with her over-protective parents, and suddenly finds herself on her own. Circumstances lead her to meet two hot and hunky alpha males - Eric and Sean - who have an unknown history together and violently hate each other. This sets up what we think is going to be a somewhat predictable, yet intense and interesting love triangle. What I loved about this book is that nothing is as it seems.I kept anticipating the story between these individuals to unfold as many love triangles do, with a clear winner and the "good guy vs. the bad guy" being identified. But it never happened. Who are these mysterious men? Why do they hate each other? What is the secret they are trying to keep from Ruby? What is their motivation and ulterior motive? These are all questions I kept asking myself gleefully through much of this book. I'm a sucker for a story that isn't quite so black and white. Just when you think she placed her trust in the right guy, she finds herself betrayed and abused in horrible ways. The story was always one step ahead of where I thought it was going - and then enters a third hotty toward the back half of the book!Ruby has fallen into a dangerous and mysterious world, where it becomes very difficult to tell who can be trusted and who is going to betray (or kill) her. She eventually comes to learn that she is a vicious and powerful creature herself, and hunted by muliples groups with their own hidden agendas.I enjoyed the quick witted dialog and some of the saracstic interactions between these characters. Although Ruby is quite naive for a 28-year-old, the story is set up in such a way that we understand why (she grew up blind and sheltered, only very recently regaining her site). The paranormal element was introduced later in the story than might be expected, but I enjoyed the suspense and mystery that it set up as we try to understand what is going in this story. The end provided a small twist that will draw many readers, including myself, to the next book in this series.

I like the idea behind the characters, but I think I hate Ruby. Granted, she is at a great disadvantage in regards to many things but she just comes off as dim witted. Talk about bad decision making. Even with as little information, she could make better choices. I'm giving this series a second chance and will read book two because I'm interested in Sean's character. I rated this a three star because when I don't focus on the leading character and all that she lacks, I found that I was intrigued and entertained. Here is hoping we get to learn more about this world and its factions, and maybe let the leading character gain some wisdom and knowledge. I guess my biggest complaint is that I couldn't connect with the main character. I couldn't even hold on to my sympathy for her.

First up, the overall story is quite good. Ruby is an interesting character, and the plot moves along nicely without making it too easy to figure out what's going on. I enjoyed reading it thoroughly.Unfortunately, there were a few annoyances. First, I find odd how obsessed a woman who has been blind almost her entire life is with clothes. The descriptions of her various outfits are tedious and get very old, very fast. Second, Ruby can be a blithering idiot at times. This is all justified with repeated references to having not been socialized, etc, etc, but there comes a point when she really needs to quit making assumptions and start talking to people.Of course, Ruby's not the only person who can't seem to communicate. Eric and Sean (for different reasons) are both amazingly tight-lipped. Sean never manages to say anything useful until cornered, and even then he only says enough to end the questioning instead of making sure Ruby really knows what's going on. Eric only says enough to move Ruby where he wants, and she keeps trusting him despite how odd his behavior is. In other words, nobody is talking to anyone else. Needless to say, that causes all manner of messes.

I read this in two sittings, but would have liked to have finished it in one. The depth of the storylines and characters weaves a rich tapestry that goes beyond the usual stories one might imagine would be told. Dancing is a literal and figurative term in the book that makes for a secondary event throughout. I'm glad the next book in the series is already written!

Dispatches from Dystopia: Histories of Places Not Yet Forgotten

Review

“Melancholic but always fascinating Brown's journeys to some of the world’s furthest and most fragile destinations help us explore the meaning of place and memory and, along the way, subtly re-invent the art of the exploration. Dispatches from Dystopia is a compelling and important book.” (Alastair Bonnett, author of Unruly Places: Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies)“Brown is among our most visionary historians: a scholar, writer, and traveler who forces us to think of awfulness as a kind of opportunity and emptiness as another kind of thriving. Dispatches from Dystopia should be read by anyone interested in the fate of modernity in places that were once thought to be at its forefront. But it is also a set of essays on the art and science of sense-making: when to go to the archives and when to ignore them, how to hear and smell a place, and why our stories about someone else's past end up being some version of our own.” (Charles King, author of Odessa: Genius and Death in a City of Dreams)“Well written, raw, compelling, and seldom boring.” (Library Journal)“Brown's book masterfully straddles the line between personal travelogue and academic research. Her essays jump from a war-torn region of Central Asia to a forgotten hotel basement in Seattle, and Brown argues that history is much better served by historians who put themselves in the places they research and the essays they write.” (Shelf Awareness)“Brown is a historian, but she is also a traveler.  . . . For Brown, it is not enough simply to research a place, to reproduce published photographs. The importance of the body, of the physical presence of the writer, runs throughout Dispatches from Dystopia. Reacting against a kind of history too narrowly focused on printed records, on archives and official histories, Brown argues that historians must also seek out what cannot be transcribed and collated by scribes. To see, one must go: ‘The premise of this book,’ she writes, ‘is that traveling can be a form of negotiation, an unraveling of certainties and convictions and a reassembling of the past.’” (Los Angeles Review of Books)“Historians spend lots of time in archives and libraries. But documents often reveal little about people who lived on the margins of society or whose stories are intentionally obscured. To uncover these people’s stories, historian and self-described ‘professional disaster tourist’ ‘ Brown ventures into a variety of wastelands. Dispatches from Dystopia compellingly chronicles people who were or are living on the edge.” (Science News)“Dispatches from Dystopia is a remarkable work on fascinating places, and combines the best of historical analysis and travel writing. Despite its melancholic tone, it is a visionary work that deserves a wide audience.” (Times Higher Education)“The aesthetic pleasure of ‘ruin porn’—documenting places that have been abandoned and decayed by the quirks of cultural or economic transitions—is deeply connected to historian Kate Brown’s Dispatches from Dystopia: Histories of Places Not Yet Forgotten. Rather than holing up in the library for the close inspection of primary source documents, she ventures out to places like Uman, in the Ukraine, and Billings, Montana, where dystopian stories resonate in the land and the people who occupy it. . . . Each of Brown’s essays is engaging, and together they create a larger story about the ways that places tell stories that often remain untold.” (PopMatters)

This book, published at University of Chicago, (2015), in what to me is a series of three works with largely the same set of concerns that are wonderfully explored by Kate Brown. The other two, preceding, this one are "Plutopia," Oxford, (2013), and "A Biography of No Place," Harvard,(2003). Each of her books addresses her concerns in magically different and engaging ways. Readers will immediately notice that the narratives alternate between standard third person and, the most important one, first person. The writer is involved in the events themselves and not just as an observer or a scribe. Kate Brown's humanity is there on every page making it clear that her concerns are those also of her readers and, obviously, those she in engaged with everyday in her travels and research. The central topic, though is what a wasteland we have made of vast stretches of the world because of our obsessions with nuclear weapons and nuclear power. Her concern is not just Chernobyl, Fukushima, Three-Mile Island, but mainly two plutonium factories and what they have done to the political structures of our lives and, centrally, the devastation to our habitats and ourselves. The silence of radioactive isotopes have made it possible for us to remain unconscious of the effects all of the waste products have had on our health, the huge number of deaths that are not grouped in the obituary columns of local newspapers, but appear in families over many generations, and since these products do not just disappear, we, our children, our neighbors all, for many generations suffer and die from radiation poisoning. Our animals, pets and livestock are poisoned. All growing things are poisoned, and since radiation cannot be seen, its effects are difficult to trace to the damage they cause in our bodies and in all living things. Governments organized to produce nuclear weapons and then nuclear power urging its continuing production saying, often, that it is non-polluting, does not cause climate warming, and is both more effective and less costly than burning coal or making wind farms or other sustainable power alternatives. But? Nothing is free. The costs, though silent and long lived, are easily ignored until they pile up and no one wants the refuse in their back yards. People living by the production facilities deny the dangers because of the thousands of jobs created by the industry. All of this, in marvelously knitted and dramatic narrative gets revealed at just the right places in these three works. I have now been through all three of them and cannot wait until we get to see the revelations from her current sabbatical leave. I have not been soenthusiastic for an historians work since I was, long ago, an undergraduate learning about the Trans-Mississippi West by a teacher who was as involved in the lives and communities of Native Americans and their histories. Kate Brown has entered my pantheon of writers and teachers along with Dr. William E. Unrau. You may find his work here, too.

Rigorous and disciplined, this is an essential book with necessary lessons and perspectives not just for historians but anthropologists, doctors, even lawyers, and anyone serious about people and the world. In each essay, Brown places her person at some boundary--not just geographical (though that's always present and apparent), but at the limit of some structured, inadequate, strained understanding, whether it be a political outline of ethnicity, a scientific diagnosis of a disease, a historical depiction of an event--and Janus-like looks both into the accepted wisdom and out into the shadowy mixed realm of potential truths. Always illuminating, always engaging, always just a little too short, always honoring the places and especially the people she writes about, these essays exemplify scholarly intellect and the role academic inquiry plays in the world..

Dr. Brown forces us to confront the idea of a modernist wasteland from every angle. What it means for us, where we think it may refer to, and, most importantly, if we've been living in one all along. The juxtaposition of Soviet and post-Soviet settings with American counterparts is moving. More importantly, her prose and style make accessible an otherwise difficult matter. Highly recommended.

I love Kate Brown. This book isn't as long as Plutopia, it's not as overwhelming.

The "spatial turn" made both scholarly and personal - done by a historian with a thorough handle on the historiography (to which she is importantly contributing btw) and a truly deft pen.
