Billy Hazelnuts and the Crazy Bird, by Tony Millionaire

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Millionaire's backyard golem returns in this winning follow-up to 2006's Billy Hazelnuts. With a piecrust body, hazelnut eyes, and titanic strength, the title character struggles with the vicissitudes of human--and animal--society. This all-ages-friendly tale opens with a comical but sincere note of existential angst, but Billy ultimately discovers his orientation in the world through his relationships with others. Rescuing the family cat from an attacking owl, Billy finds he has caused the abandonment of a newly hatched chick. This foundling attempts to hungrily devour Billy even as he quests forth to find the "crazy bird" 's mother. The book is drawn in a loosened version of Millionaire's ornate pen and ink style, evoking the vital, calligraphed fantasies of turn-of-the-20th-century cartoonists and children's book illustrators. The loose hatching matches the book's propulsive narrative pace, but pauses at intervals for a potent accumulation of detail or an expressive character moment. The tale itself frequently veers toward the lunatic, but if it skirts the surreal it does so precisely by taking the kinds of unfettered narrative turns that characterize the best children's literature. And like those books, Millionaire's creates a safe space for exploration that remains grounded throughout in a humane sensibility that quietly makes itself known by showing, not telling. From Booklist

In this follow-up to Billy Hazelnuts (2006), Millionaire carries on the sublime childlike flair that is a far cry from the sweet sense of innocence often ascribed to wee ones. Billy (a manikin made of garbage) is wont to run off maniacally at a moment’s notice to punch an owl in the face, but he also embarks on a determined (if crazy) quest to reunite baby owl with Momma, even as the little bird chomps away at him, leaving nothing but his two hazelnut eyes behind. No one rides the edge between charming and demented quite like Maakies cartoonist Millionaire, and he’s in hilariously fine form here. --Ian Chipman

My God this is so good. Billy Hazelnuts Book One is my favorite all-time Tony Millionaire book, but this one comes a close second. The cosmis scope of book one astounded me, and the personal character depth and insane action of book two was such a brilliant and beautiful contrast from the first BH book.Fwiw, the fate of Billy at the end of CRAZY BIRD made me laugh so hard I had to put the book down. There is a strangeness and originality that I see hints of all the time in various underground storytelling, film, music and art, but Tony Millionaire's work has it in spades. There is such a deep intelligence behind it all, it reminds me of the graphic novel version of a Charles Ives symphonic work: violent, gentle, funny and soulful, all with an underlying intelligence that is both entertaining and profound.Hats off to Millionaire again with another masterpiece of madness, Billy Hazelnuts and the Crazy Bird.

It's great to see Billy Hazelnuts back! This is a fantastic graphic novel, the draftsmanship is excellent, as usual, and the characters are really funny. And the story is good for all ages, honest. It's another winner from Tony Millionaire!

I like his work but this one wasn't as good as some of his other work such as Sock Monkey.

Fairy tales, even in their modern sanitized forms, have always been a place for children to safely explore a dangerous world. Comic art was once a perfect medium for that same exploration, whether via walking beds in Slumberland, caped marvels smashing robots, or Popeye exploring some new desert isle.Somewhere along the way, comics abandoned young readers. Great work was and is produced, of course, whether in Alan Moore's Cold War commentary (Watchmen), Art Spiegelman's disarming anthropomorphic Holocaust account (The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1)), Marjane Satrapi's haunting memoir (The Complete Persepolis), or Ryan North's post-post-modern philosophical gas (the best of Dinosaur Comics: 2003-2005 A.D.). Comics are no longer merely "funny books," instead touching on areas as diverse as Lovecraftian horror and punk rock tour journals. Yet save for a few mindlessly-simplified TV spin-off comics or toyetic anime-inspired productions, young readers continue to be left behind until they grow cynical enough for the art form in its best-selling forms.Tony Millionaire, of course, is no stranger to the adult side of comics, though he remains an outsider. His whimsically obscene and obtuse "Maakies" is a stand-out of modern strips and he has dabbled in dark tales with his "Sock Monkey." Millionaire is an organic creator who probably would be very uncomfortable talking shop at Comic-Con. His influences draw from the Golden Age of newspaper strips and the first explosion of underground comix, but I doubt he's picked up anything from the aforementioned Alan Moore or could name any Batman villains that didn't appear on the Adam West show. He doesn't seem given to Scott McCloud's celebratory introspection nor Chris Ware's endless layouts. Millionaire lives and dreams in his own world, and thus there's always been a purity to his work (this of course was why "The Drinky Crow Show" didn't last on [adult swim], as it was others trying to wield Tony's magic). With Billy Hazelnuts, however, he's turned his attention to young readers without neglecting his loyal fanbase. The closest comparison is perhaps the universally-acclaimed work by Jeff Smith (Bone: The Complete Cartoon Epic in One Volume (Vol 1)).When first we met Billy, he was an edible garbage golem on a rampage, thrust into madcap adventures with a hotheaded child scientist named Becky. "Billy Hazelnuts" was a triumph of rich art and wild characters that seemed fit for all ages without needless winks to an adult audience. In "Billy Hazelnuts and the Crazy Bird," Millionaire revisits Rimperton Farm but sets Billy on a solo adventure. This, my friends, is a fairy tale. Like all good fairy tales, it gently exposes its readers to grim things with sparkling glitter."I'd rather be slop in a pig than be forced to witness this grotesque parade," Billy howls, "...wasp larvae eating the living guts of caterpillars! Abominable cheeses and repugnant sausages! Pasty-faced mushrooms thriving on the rotten flesh of decaying stumps!! It is a loathsome system of eating and being eaten!"This, of course, is a sidelong glance at theodicy. The world Billy has come to know since we last saw him is our gruesome world of decay and death. Just as Hansel and Gretel explored the horrors of being abandoned and unloved, and just as the Boy Who Cried Wolf learned that life doesn't always have a safety net, so Billy Hazelnuts gives his readers a honest glance at a cruel world, as quirky as his particular universe may be.But the story of course doesn't wallow in the macabre. It's a perfect bedtime tale for imaginative youngsters. Scrapping with a cat and an owl, Billy finds himself chasing the mother bird away from a newly-hatched chick (who looks more and more like a plucked Drinky Crow than an owl with each panel) that is hungry for the delicious baked hero. Faced with the unfortunate in a harsh world, Billy Hazelnuts responds with a gruff kindness, heading off on a quest to reunite the infant with its mother. Losing limbs to the starving chick, dropping into a subterranean lake (those made of sugar shouldn't swim), and having to deal with a candy-housed inventor don't sway Billy from his course.Billy is let loose in yet another captivating Millionaire landscape full of realistic owls brooding on branches, talking cats laying out why one must hate what one eats, and baked banisters supporting a mouth-watering mansion straight out of 1940's cartoon Heaven. The cave sequence is perfectly claustrophobic and the forest scenes are as beautiful as they are haunting. Every panel of "The Crazy Bird" bristles with energy, begging to be revisited again and again for the rapturous detail. There's a timelessness to the art, and the same goes for the wordplay. Millionaire is the king of twisted phrases ("It is all 'confectionery' to me!" the inventor Rupert cries about a candy car). This is a book that begs to be read aloud in various voices, the pages turned to the cooing audience. Pages 74 through 94, where Billy races into a cave to save his avian charge from a hungry cat, is some of Millionaire's best cartooning. The expressions, the sound effects, the shading -- if comics scholarship wasn't relegated simply to a subculture trying to encourage itself, these pages would be taught in college courses on sequential art. Millionaire is A.A. Milne, E. C. Segar, and Winsor McCay all rolled into one.The only disappointment, and a minor one at that, is that the intrepid Becky from the first book is relegated only to brief appearances at the beginning and end. She was such a source of delight in "The Crazy Bird"'s predecessor, and such a driver of that plot, that her absence from the main adventure is striking. That said, "The Crazy Bird" is a much less epic story than "Billy Hazelnuts," though comfortably so. The first book laid out the basic dreamlike logic of Billy's world, and this second book explores it with a simple tale of misguided nobility.Again, Millionaire produces a book that can be recommended without hesitation to all ages. One only hopes that the Muse Millionaire shares the aforementioned Milne, Segar, and McCay will begin visiting him more often so that we can have another Billy Hazelnuts romp quite soon.

In what seems to be an increasingly dumbed-down world of graphic novels and cartoons, Tony Millionaire continues to prove that there are still artists who can produce work that not only satisfies those with more erudite and demanding tastes, but provides new strata on which to enjoy his odd mixture of genius and gutter.I'd like to see him take over the work of providing strips for Bazooka Joe. It would become the biggest selling gum in history, while all the while reminding its consumers that they are, indeed, better than all the rest of that slovenly hoi-polloi. If you haven't yet experienced his work, start here, and then go waaaaay back to the beginning of Maakies, and soak it up. You'll be a better man for it.

I was astonishedly amazed by the artwork and story in this brilliant book. I am buying more copies for every child in my family.

Winnie The Pooh this is not! If you have a love for slightly melancholy and offbeat storytelling paired with beautiful, detailed, and quirky artwork, you'll be pleased with this further adventure of Hazelnuts.

Yet another awesome book from Tony Millionaire! I own every book he's put out (as far as i know). Keep em' coming Tony!

I have heard Dr. Cowan make some of these arguments about vaccines and autoimmunity before in his other books and in interviews, so I have been looking forward to his book on the subject, and it does not disappoint. For all of his sound reasoning, decades of experience and extensive research on this topic, what I appreciate most in Dr. Cowan's writing is the clear, simple, and personal way he delivers the information so that I can understand it and relate to it. I do not have a child with autism but I myself have an auto immune disease which I have been successful at controlling through natural means, and figuring all of that out on my own lead me down a path to try and better understand how to support the health of my two boys. Dr. Cowan's previous book "Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby and Child Care" gave me tools to support my kids through illnesses in ways that no one else offered me, and the methods he suggests actually work! I find his arguments about vaccines and the origins of auto immune disorders and autism to be fascinating and utterly convincing. He strikes me as a truly brilliant physician who is in a position to share what he has learned over the course of a lifetime of practice, and we would all benefit by listening to his reasoning. I truly appreciate the backlash he may have to endure when addressing this topic from his point of view, and I'm thankful he is brave enough, and qualified enough, to deliver the argument so authoritatively and beautifully, despite the danger of bucking conventional thought on the matter. It never sat well with me that a parent could observe radical setbacks in their child's health following a vaccination, report that to their doctor, and then be told, by the doctor and the community at large, "oh, sorry, I know it seems like you observed a vaccine injury, but you know what? You're wrong, bye," and, further, that they would also be ostracized for their conclusions, rather than supported through what can be an endlessly difficult ordeal. One hundred years from now, if we are still on this planet, I believe we will look back on this period in health care--and especially our vaccination program--with horror. Thanks so much for the book, Dr. Cowan!

The shocking thing I gathered from reading Dr. Cowan's book is that the US may wipe out most of its population with the same diseases (Measles and Smallpox) that killed off millions of Native Americans -- all thanks to the vaccination policy currently being followed which puts trust in the notion of herd immunity via mandatory vaccination even though vaccination does not last a lifetime. This book is the sorry tale of bad and corrupt science told by a deeply insightful man who bravely challenges accepted wisdom and takes a second look at both faulty basic science and the medical practices it engenders. It is a short book but covers all the basics you need to know to see the mess we have gotten ourselves into: in the interests of saving our children minor suffering with acute illnesses we have condemned our whole population to a looming epidemic of lethal proportions -- by using vaccination. The book examines the how and why we got into this state but adroitly avoids making political or accusatory statements - the doctor leaves us to draw our own conclusions. If there were a giant meteor looming in our skies governments would act to do something about it - with climate change we manage to drag our feet, do some recycling, say it may not be real and wait for government to sort it out - now we have a more personal challenge: to inform ourselves of what is true and then take action as individuals to begin to set things right. Anyone who has children or grandchildren or youngsters they care about needs to join in this debate but it's not just children who are at risk. The book's title makes it seem to be about concerns for child welfare but it's we adults who will suffer if we lose our immunity to the diseases and it won't be an itchy rash or a snotty nose we will get, it'll be something deadly. We have been on this dangerous path for about a century now and like the road to hell it is paved with good intentions (or marketing speak of good intentions). The good news is that we just need to stop vaccinating and revise our views on childhood diseases and their treatment. Dr. Cowan shows us what to do and now it's up to us to take action. This is a brilliant straightforward book, easy to read and understand but getting people to believe the truth of it will be the difficult part. The second path covered in this book is the slower disaster but perhaps the more inexorable one - that of the destruction of our autoimmune systems by vaccines. Although Dr Cowan has a solution to the destruction, I believe it is not one most people will choose to take: giving up starches and sugars for at least six months, maybe for years and then following his treatment regime. It is known that many diabetics will not give up sugar even under threat of losing limbs and eyesight to the disease so how will people told to rebalance their gut microbiome by the same treatment respond? Without removing toxins injected as part of vaccination and then repairing the microbiome, recovery from autoimmune disease is impossible. So many things come under the automimmune label: rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, MS, various thyroid afflictions, allergies, tiredness with loss of the joy in life, and quite possibly autism and cancer. What will a disease riddled society be like to live in? How will we afford to support and treat all those sick people?Perhaps there will be some miracle breakthrough to make vaccines work without adjuvants, some true understanding of the two immune system responses that will enable us to trigger lifelong immunity at a cell-mediated level not just with temporary antibodies, some nanotech fix for ongoing breakdowns. But how much simpler it would be to follow Dr Cowan's analysis and advice: go back to letting children get childhood diseases and live long healthy protected lives. I want that world but I think it would take a revolution to achieve it. Reading this book is a good start.

Dr Cowan, for whom I have great respect because of my personal experience with him as a diagnostician--has written a compelling book about the role of childhood illness in building a strong immune system. He also questions the role vaccine adjuvants like mercury and aluminum play in damaging the immune system, and the close ties between drug manufacturers and the CDC--with the former head of the CDC transitioning from that role to an executive position at Merck, for example. Most people I have tried to discuss his views with dismiss any criticism of vaccines as crazy antivaxer talk. But Cowan is thoughtful in his exposition, cites multiple studies and research to back his views, and his arguments seem compelling. I would very much appreciate other physicians responding to his concerns in an equally rational fashion. Whether and how much to vaccinate seems to me a pretty critical public health issue.Cowan is a lucid writer, though I wish he had left out some of the more radical ideas of Rudolf Steiner. Vaccination is already a hot button topic, and readers who are unfamiliar with Steiner and anthroposophy are likely to be put off by the Steiner references.

I understand this book is nearly 40 years old, but for the definitive expert on salicylates it's completely inaccurate. The majority of these recipes contain foods very high in salicylates. Be warned if you have allergy like I do. Eating most of these recipes will make you sick.

good book, love the program, just not the kind of foods we cook as much, but we are unique in what we eat.

This is a great book. It helped a lot with figuring out what to eat and what to eliminate. Plus it gave recipes.

About 30 years ago I put my son on this diet. Within a week I had people asking what I had done because he was like a different child. I had given my book away many many years ago. I ordered this copy for a friend.

A must for anyone who has hyperactive children with ADD or ADD. I suggest the book called WHY CAN'T MY CHILD BEHAVE also. I was in theFEINGOLD PROGRAM and this really makes a difference in child behavior

Good book

This book is out of print, however if you have a child who is hyper or you have an ADD problem, you should consider The Feingold Diet/Cookbook. The theory is that artificial colors and flavors cause an allergic reaction resulting in behaviour such as lack of sustained attention/coffee nerves/easily distracted but a diet of natural ingredients allows your body to function evenly. No meds! Try it.

It's great to have Feingold friendly recipes but unfortunately the book is old and therefore has unacceptable ingredients in some of them--such as Crisco.

My mother use to tell me to read the Book of Enoch all the time but I never listened to her. She was well read, overly intelligent to the point where no one really could talk to her about the BIble or the history except Cardinals which really didn't talk about the Book of Enoch but knew of it. My mother was diagnosed with cancer, it was at the stage where nothing could be done which suited her. Her words were take me home! I told her I was working on it and she said to me not that home!!! I took her home she died two days later without hesitation or wonder of where she would be going. At this point of my life I wondered how can anyone be that sure? she wasn't a bible thumper, ( for the lack of a better saying) she was well read in a lot of history I was clueless to. In this moment in my life I decided to research and read her library of knowledge. I started with the book of Enoch. My eyes were open and so many things answered. I would recommend this book to all.

I give a 4 star because there is nothing wrong with this book. I didn't personally care for it because it is quotes of the book of Enoch and not the actual book. I felt misled by the title of the book. Maybe I misunderstood something in the discription!

Ahh, one of the hidden books of the Dead Sea Scroll finds. Left out by the Roman Catholic Church. Hummmm. Ya think there might be a reason for that.(?) Such as, ENOCH documents the reality of Genesis 6:4. And once a believer goes down the rabbit hole of GENESIS 6:4 ---look out ! You begin to marvel at " it's all REAL '. AND your inner core surprisingly becomes a magnet after more and more of the BIBLICAL untold. It becomes an incredible personal journey. GO for it !! You won't be disappointed.

Little complex but good information. Not for beginners and casual readers .Worth buying and should spend time

As a Sprirt lead Christian for over thirty year ,you think you know allot . You read this book and books from Pastor R.Morris and you don't know that much. There are gifts we receive with Yeweh's grace, but learning more and more makes us strong. This man, J. Pumpkin has wrote and anointed book here. Read and be Blessed open your heart and mind. Get ready!! Wow

Great compilation of these lost scrolls; author has incorporated scripture from the Holy cannon to help tie things together and show how what Enoch says lines up with what we know to be true from God's Word. The second and 3rd book of Enoch, as the author points out are not accurate and different parts that do not line up. The first book of Enoch will help you understand the Watcher angels, what happened to them and who and what the Nephilim were, as well as explain where demons come from. It was astonishing and I could not put it down, for the most part of Enoch 1. It ties together with Jesus as the coming Messiah and backs what we are told in the book of Revelation. A good read and good price for those that want to learn more on the truth.

The book of Enoch will not take you away from the bible but actually confirms it I dont know why they ever took it out of the bible it explains alot of questions people might have on Giants and the nephilim angels and stuff. also in this day and age could even explain what happens when we mess with DNA SERIOUSLY YOU NEED THIS BOOK

very interesting...Disciples quoted from the book, yet the "church" deemed the book to controversial to include it in the modern bible of today (700AD) or maybe later, kinda forget dates....Anyways for the people that want to learn and understand and have knowledge, it's a book to add to your library

The leather binding and gilt-edged pages make this a beauty, but more than that are the superb traditional ghost and terror stories within. This is a book for discriminating readers only, yet the cost is within anyone's reach. Rather than vulgar stories filled with blood and hysterics, you get just the right touch of classic chill for your autumnal (and wintry) nights. There are 55(!) tales in all. A short sampling of titles includes Edith Wharton's excellent "Kerfol" (set in France, not England!); Saki's "The Open Window," with its humorous but chilling denouement; Marion Crawford's nocturnal "Screaming Skull"; and Stevenson's story of midnight dread, "The Body Snatchers," about an Edinburgh doctor who seeks corpses for laboratory instruction but is not too scrupulous about their provenance. So many great writers lie within: Poe ("William Wilson" and the forbidding "House of Usher"); Kafka, Henry James, Ambrose Bierce, the incomparable Algernon Blackwood, Polidori, W.W. Jacobs, Bram Stoker, Dickens, and M.R. James, just to name a few. If you are a connoisseur, you'll be familiar with some but, even so, they are all gathered here in one volume so that you needn't go searching for scattered remnants of the whole. This book is one of the three greatest volumes of its kind. The other two are Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural (a classic and still in print and available new at Amazon), and Tales of Terror and the Supernatural, edited by Marvin Kaye, available here only through third-party sellers now. I must confess to opening the latter late one cold night, the house still and quiet and approaching the midnight hour, then turning to a story titled "Lazurus," reading the first two pages, and thinking, "No, I'm not ready for this one this late," then closing it with a small shudder before pulling the blankets tightly around me. That's just one reason Marvin Kaye's book is worth the effort to find.

The book arrived as scheduled and well protected by Amazon bubble wrap. I love the selection choice and overall look of the text but upon opening (carefully) I discovered the back cover had separated from the binding, leaving a space between the cover and end papers. I know this can be repaired rather easily but I feel that this is unacceptable in a NEW book.

very nice quality and pleasantly hefty to hold. ive only read through the first few stories but its been a nice selection so far

Really nice looking book. Made a great gift.

This is a reprint of a book I had and loved as a kid. It was beautifully done and a welcome addition to my book collection.

It's beautiful I love it

The book is just so beautiful. It gets a lot of attention as it should
