I needed to do a wedding toast, and while I have witnessed several, I was at a bit of a loss for what to say.What this book did not do for me: it didn't give me a toast to use.What this book did for me: Inspiration...it helped me get ideas for what to say! I think a toast should be genuine and from the heart, and by reading the different toasts from multiple perspectives (i.e. mother of the bride, friend, etc.) I was able to think of ideas and stories that helped me craft my own toast.Therefore, this book is great if either 1) you like to "write your own material" and just want some inspiration or 2) can't afford to hire a comedian or speechwriter.

I just loved this book. I've been a bridesmaid so many times and have had to make toasts and say "a few words" on many occasions. I just wish I had had this book ten years ago. Some of the toasts actually brought tears to my eyes. It's truly a reference book that's written with heart, passion, and humor. I recommend it to anyone who needs to come up with a meaningful speech for anniversaries, weddings, any emotion-filled life event.

My brother got married recently and I was the best man. The thought of getting up and giving the toast at the reception was really scary to me so he got me this book to help. When I read through the book I found several that made a lot of sense so I combined a couple together and added a few things of my own. It turned out great and I know I couldn't have done it without this book.

This is a very cool book! I was recently in my cousin's wedding and had to give a couple of speeches about the bride and groom and it really gave me a lot of good ideas. There was lots to choose from so that I sounded like I knew what I was talking about. Even my mother liked it. Well worth it.

This book really allowed me to enjoy my daughter's wedding. Not only was it a great help to the wedding party it was also a great help to me and my husband. We were able to give loving, appropriate toasts with a minimum of nervousness. I highly recommend it.

I bought this book based upon some of the other reviews that said it was great and they couldn't have been more wrong. I needed the book on short notice so it cost me $25 and it was absolutely useless. There is nothing useful in this book at all. I ended up just winging the toast because I didn't have time to look for another book.

Written by Yehuda HaChasid, a legendary medieval Jewish sage, Sefer Hasidim is one of the most influential Jewish books of the last thousand years.In Sefer Hasidim and the Ashkenazic Book in Medieval Europe (University of Pennsylvania Press ISBN 9780812250091), Dr. Ivan Marcus, Professor of Jewish History at Yale University, has written a fascinating monograph that details the story behind this book, the milieu in which it was written, how it was written and updated, and ultimately edited.Sefer Hasidim is unique in that it is not a commentary on Jewish Law or chumash, rather is it a set of over 1,000 stories about life in medieval Germany.Marcus observes that we tend superimpose our understanding of authorship, and think that authors write a book in a linear manner, and that it is ultimately preserved in one or more manuscripts.The style of Sefer Hasidim however, and for that part, much of the written work during the times of early Ashkenazic Europe, was that authors composed books in small-paragraph units, and then combined them over time into different editions.As such, Marcus contends that Sefer Hasidim was never a single work. Rather it was countless single paragraphs that Yehuda HaChasid combined into sever editions of varying lengths. It was an open work, with numerous parallel edition.Marcus observes that the writing of Sefer Hasidim was not unique, and was simply the mold in which Ashkenazic books were written during that era. These quick to read, and rearrange paragraphs were later codified into various edition. And in the last part of the book, Marcus has assembled a descriptive catalog of the many manuscripts and editions of Sefer Hasidim.For those looking to understand the nature of authorship during the era of the rishonim and especially Sefer Hasidim, this is a most interesting read.

I have really enjoyed hearing the stories of United States servicemen who won the country's highest military commendation, the Medal of Honor. Peaceful, freedom loving people all over the world may enjoy what is offered within.Each story is amazing. As a recipient said, when a child asks "What is it like to have killed someone?" his reflection was "that's a real kick in the gut." "Any human being forced to take the life of another always bears a great sadness."Courage, Sacrifice, Duty, friendship, Love of neighbor-friend and foe, Loyalty, and Freedom are common themes in each story. It does not glamorize war.The book and accompanying DVD highlight stories of the Medal of Honor recipients that were still living at the time of its publication. Posthumous recipients of the award are not covered.I found it amazing that all of them represent America as a socio-economic, religious, and ethnic cross section of the population. World War II, Korea and Vietnam War veterans are covered. Each story also highlights a kind of valor/bravery/self sacrifice that was not sought by the recipient. Each one says he was not out looking for the honor but that he did what he felt he needed to do in a given perilous situation... only free men/women...driven by an idealogy of a higher good, love and freedom rather than hatred and self-destruction can make this claim.The DVD is 80 minutes long and quite touching. It highlights 11 recipients of the award in interviews. The recipients re-tell the story in their own words along with brief narration.This is an important piece of world history and should be passed on to future generations.

If you think you've been having a "tough day", pick up this book and read one or two pages and see what "tough day" really means. I always took the time to read all the bio info on each MOH recipient just to try and get a sense of where these people come from. (Answer: ALL OVER AMERICA) My time in the Navy was during the Viet Nam war, always in West Pac. I never had any duty in combat, but I always looked at the dates of the actions by these extraordinary men and tried to remember where I was when THEY were in the THICK of it. I knew four guys who did not come back (all Marines) and this book will be a keepsake in the book case forever. This book should be required reading in every high school History/Civics class in the country.

This was purchased for my Husband for his birthday. My 8 year old son asked, what is the Medal of Honor? And so the dialogue continues, with the most magnificent companion book that you could ask for. I recommend this book to all parents, but perhaps I am going out on a limb here, I recommend this to all Dad's who want to teach their kids about the meaning of bravery and honor. You won't regret it and they will never forget. Lest we forget.

This book is an amazing account of who true American "HERO's" are, not somebody from Hollywood or a music band. It saddens my heart that every year we lose more and more of these "HERO's" and nothing is said about them on the National News, but everytime a Pop-Music Icon or Hollywood actor who lived a questionable life anyways passes away from a drug overdose we glorify them for numerous years to come. Last time I checked the President of the United States of America is required to render a Salute to a "Medal of Honor" receipient not to someone who sold over a million copies of a record! The "Medal of Honor" is the pinnacle of the morals and standards that we use to teach our children, unfortunately the Welfare System is what we teach our children is the standard today. There is a difference in what America used to be and what we've allowed it to become today. Buy this book, sit down, read through it with your children and teach them what it means to be a "True American".

I have always been interested in military history, especially WWII. This book is excellent! The pages are filled with accounts and photos of these heros. I have not completed reading all of the book. I like to savor each story after I read it. I wonder if I could do what they did. I am impressed with the deeds these men performed to secure our freedom.I recommend the book to anyone that enjoys history.

We homeschool; found this book to be a wonderful & necessary addition for our history courses. Ours came with the DVD, even though we purchased used. Beautifully illustrated, well written. My father served in the AIr Force back in the 1960's, and he looks forward to borrowing it soon.

So says Patrick McGovern, and this book explains how it got that way. McGovern theorizes that organisms great and small, perhaps from the unicellular to non-human primates to humans, are hard wired to crave the products of sugar fermentation, particularly alcohol. This taste for fermented beverages has been a driving force in the evolution of human biology, agriculture, culture and religion, or so it would seem. McGovern documents this evolution through archeological findings from Europe, Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East -- anywhere and everywhere wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages have been made for many thousands of years,from grain, fruit, honey and whatever other raw material mankind could coax into creating intoxicating food and drink. We are, as McGovern has entitled his very first chapter, "Homo Imbibens."As the book concludes, summing up the theme, "our species' intimate relationship with fermented beverages over millions of years has, in large measure, made us what we are today."Being neither an archeologist nor a paleontologist, I found some of the copious detail presented in this book to be tough sledding. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating read and worth the effort.

Simply an outstanding book of scholarship. McGovern is a scientist who speaks fluent vernacular, which for most of us is a blessing. This is a remarkably inclusive survey of worldwide alcoholic beverage production and consumption from the end of the last ice age through the age of the Greeks. Though much of the book deals with the beginnings and subsequent evolution of wine and beer, he touches on drinks, ceremonies and rituals involving fermentation of myriad fruits, honey and starch laden grains from South America to China to Africa. One can't help but be impressed by the widespread use of alcohol by almost every societal group on earth. The picture painted by the author is of an ancient world practically awash in mixed drinks (beer, wine, and honey mixed together being a common one) and a remarkable diversity of stand alone wine and beer styles, often infused with herbs and flavorings, many hallucinatory, to enable the priests and leaders of early societies to commune with their particular gods and goddesses. These drinks have not only been an integral part of human life for thousands of years but may well have been the impetus behind agricultural domestication, human migration and trade and the spread of dominant cultures.For any student of the human condition, of the development of ritual and religion, of the emergence of humanity from our earliest hominid ancestors - and certainly for any thoughtful devotee of wine or beer, I highly recommend Uncorking The Past.

Absolutely fascinating, enthralling read! I am finding it difficult to put this book down so that I can go to work....or do just about anything else. If you have any interest in fermentation and how it has affected humanity throughout history, you're going to want to read this. The author is known as "The Indiana Jones of Ancient Fermented Beverages", and now I understand why.

A good review, with interesting insights on the evolution of fermented beverages in early humanity. A lot of unexpected side observations on everything from the bible to the human psychology, as well.

Very entertaining, interesting and informative history of fermented beverages by beer lovers' favorite molecular archeologist, Dr. Patrick McGovern, who has worked with Dogfishhead in recipe recreations and was seen on Brewmasters. Great read if you are interested in archeology, brewing, fermentation in general, and the rise of civilization.

While this was required reading for a required college course, and I have ZERO interest in the subject matter of this book, (sorry!) I really enjoyed reading it. My mind and world-view was greatly expanded. What could be dry material is entertaining and well written. I'm glad they "MADE" me read this. I have referred back even after that class was over.

The bible of one of the worst and slickest economic cults ever devised, globalism as designed by the oligarchs. A recipe for disrespecting the middle and lower classes and concentrating political, economic, educational and information power in the hands of a very few families who mean us no good. Exactly what the Founding Fathers warned us about and we missed our cue to act. Too late now. We let Grover Norquist drown our democracy in his bath tub. To cleans your mind, follow with Naomi Klein's, The Shock Doctrine, and Sam Pizzigati's, The Rich Don't Always Win. It will probably take a year to finish Shock Doctrine but is well worth the time.

This book addresses some of the difficulties of globalization the study of which is especially pertinent today when the world seems to be shifting to isolationism and populism. The pendulum had maybe swung too far towards the Lexus at the expense of the Olive Tree and people want change from the status quo, all over the world. These very issues are addressed in this prophetic book. Thanks for another great read, Tom Friedman!

After reading it you you start to question if it was actually written at the end of the 1990s.It is impressive to see how clearly Thomas Friedman does what he also calls Information Arbitrage in pulling episodes and events from disparate parts of the world and in a wide variety of topics into one cohesive world view: globalization.The framework he proposes for globalization is the simplest and most useful I've ever read about and it sure made me understand much more of our world.A wonderful work of research, analysis and specially of writing went into this book.Funny thing: the book is super current even though it never mentions Google (because it was just a tiny company at the time).I'm already reading "The World is Flat" by the same author. The globalization of the world's economy is a phenomenon of the world after the demise of the Soviet Union. Friedman gives a brilliant tour de force of the causes and results of worldwide financial markets acting in accordance with their own perceived self-interest, bestowing wealth and new investment in countries based upon their potential to return a profit to investers. But he also describes what happens when the "Electronic Herd" of investors get spooked by unanticipated threats to their investments. Because countries differ widely in their ability to absorb and efficiently use investment capital, there are wide fluctuations in investment, with consequential social and economic damage as capital moves across national boundaries with the speed of a mouse click. Friedman uses an anecdotal approach it illustrate his points, and in the end, they coalesce into his principal themes, that predictability, transparency, and accountability are the standards against which all investment will be measured, and those who are unable or refuse to abide by these norms will suffer accordingly. He also analyzes the impact of these fluid financial markets on traditional societies, and the tensions that fluidity impose on the traditonal order of things. People want both the wealth that the new order brings, but also want the community and values that this financial fluidity tend to undermine. Striking a balance between hopes and dreams for a secure future, and protecting traditional community values, and providing a safety net for those who are unable to compete will be the principal tasks of political and financial leaders now and in the distant future. This book should be on every thinking person's reading list as a Must Read.
