I have hunted The mighty MOREL (KING of the SPRING) for over 60 years all over the state of Michigan. Several friends have asked me for advice as they got started, so I bought this book for them to borrow and read. This certainly did reduce the number of questions I had to answer over and over. The book is well written and accurate. There is perhaps too much information, but it certainly covers all the bases. I highly recommend this book whether you are a beginning morel hunter, or an experienced one. You will learn many new and important facts. Galen Higdon (MICHIGAN)

The science is thoroughly covered. Great book. The only problem was that it does't really address Morels of the Pacific Northwest.

I absolutely loved Snelling's Red River Valley series and was excited to see this new series start up. On the positive, I enjoy Snelling's look into daily life of years past, what it took to keep things running and body and soul together. It's insightful and interesting. However with this book it got to be repetitive...many, many pages of cooking, cleaning, killing mice, sawing trees down with little information about what was to be done with them, getting one character on and off the chamber pot repeatedly, trips to the outhouse and putting lime in it, etc. I don't know if it was the author's intent to show the grinding work and sameness of each day for these people, but there was very little plot development to keep you interested for the length of the book. One character, Einar, was abusive and angry with no explanation at all, just others thinking about asking what his problem was but never doing so. I assume this is something that will be left for the inevitable sequel. Will I read that one? I'm sure I will as I've loved her other books so much. I just hope it has more of a plot than this one.

I loved The Promise Of Dawn. It was very interesting to me as I have been to Blackduck MN many times and can picture the setting in my mind. I enjoyed reading Signe and Runes' story. It is amazing that any survived the hardships of the Northern MN winters without modern conveniences. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. From AmazonBeloved Author Lauraine Snelling Launches New Immigrant SeriesWhen Signe, her husband, Rune, and their three boys arrive in Minnesota from Norway to help a relative clear his land of lumber, they dream of owning their own farm and building a life in the New World. But Uncle Einar and Aunt Gird are hard, demanding people, and Signe and her family soon find themselves worked nearly to the bone in order to repay the cost of their voyage. At this rate, they will never have land or a life of their own.Signe tries to trust God but struggles with anger and bitterness. She has left behind the only life she knew, and while it wasn't an easy life, it wasn't as hard as what she now faces. When a new addition to the family arrives, Signe begins to see how God has been watching over them throughout their ordeal. But after all that has happened, can she still believe in the promise of a bright future?About the author:BiographyAward-winning and best selling author Lauraine Snelling began living her dream to be a writer with her first published book for young adult readers, Tragedy on the Toutle, in 1982. She has since continued writing more horse books for young girls, adding historical and contemporary fiction and nonfiction for adults and young readers to her repertoire. All told, she has over eighty books published with more than 4 million copies in print.Shown in her contemporary romances and women’s fiction, a hallmark of Lauraine’s style is writing about real issues of forgiveness, loss, domestic violence, and cancer within a compelling story. Her work has been translated into Norwegian, Danish, and German, and she has won the Romantic Times Career Achievement award for Inspirational Fiction, the Silver Angel Award for An Untamed Land and a Romance Writers of America Golden Heart for Song of Laughter. As a sought after speaker, Lauraine encourages others to find their gifts and live their lives with humor and joy. Her readers clamor for more books more often, and Lauraine would like to comply ... if only her paintbrushes and easel didn’t call quite so loudly.Lauraine and her husband, Wayne, have two grown sons, and live in the Tehachapi Mountains with a watchdog Basset named Winston. They love to travel, most especially in their forty-foot motor coach, which they affectionately deem “a work in progress”.

I had a very difficult time getting into the book. It would have gotten 3-stars had I not kept reading it. From the first, it felt I was reading a list of things done during any given day, over and over. I've read all of the books by this author regarding Ingeborg and her family (and absolutely LOVED them). In fact, I've read several over, enjoying them all over again. I think that's why this book was so difficult to get grounded into. The others just 'took off'. I often thought about one comment I had read, 'how many times can one read about getting on the pot and off the pot?'. However, and I mean a good however, I kept reading. The more I read, the more changes I saw take place in Signe's daily routine, the more I thought 'now we're getting somewhere' and the next thing you know, I was in love with the characters and the story began to develop nicely. Oh I loved really disliking Onkel Einar!! (I hope I spelled his title and name correctly, I'm not looking back to check on that.) As the book developed, I saw how the anger and angst of Gerd and Einar were truly all Signe was dealing with at first, a reluctant immigrant from Norway. No wonder it read like a list! That and her husband, Rune's, attitude didn't exactly help things along. Her boys, though, they are great kids. As I neared the end of this book, I knew I was going to read the next one. It begins with a new character as often happens in succession of the other novels. I also read the notes at the end of The Promise of Dawn. I wish the notes from the author were at the beginning because that would've helped immensely. Anyway, there's a family link to Ingeborg. It's quite a family tree to remember from book-to-book, but Rune's mother is Ingeborg's cousin, Gunlaug (I took a moment and checked the spelling of names). Though I cannot keep them all straight, I am excited to see the connection to Ingeborg. In The Promise of Dawn, you get to see the struggle of life, faith, struggles (such as being homesick and lonely) but also get to see what love can conquer. I can't wait to see what happens to everyone in the next book as Nilda takes Onkel Einar up on his offer to pay her way to Amerika. What price he has exacted from Signe's family! Will he do the same? I love Tante Gerd. That's hard to see at the beginning of the book. I am absolutely glad I stuck with it. Different from the start but very worth it.

I haven't even finished this book yet but I love it. Lauraine Snelling does such a good job with her series on Norwegians homesteading on the Plains. Rune and Signe have been asked to come to America to help his cousins. They decide to go but once they get there, the cousins treat them like servants and work them and their boys to exhaustion. Rune and his older sons are expected to fell trees in a forest seven days a week and Signe is expected to keep house and tend to the cousin who is ill. The cousin is really nasty and doesn't appreciate anything Signe does in addition the house is a mess.. She keeps on but things come to a head and changes must happen. I love this book so far. I wish there were gonig to be more than 2 in the series.

Review

"A strong courtroom [drama] that hooks you fast - and pulls you straight through to a knotty, post-courtroom surprise ending...Neat storytelling...you'll never guess who did it." ~Kirkus Reviews"Joseph Amiel's book stands head & shoulders above other popular 'legal' novels. A Question of Proof is brilliantly crafted from the opening line to the finale. It is the finest suspense novel I've read in years...entrancing. The outcome was a mystery to the last sentence. A masterpiece of suspense! ~Gregg Jarrett, Fox News Live, Court TV"Joseph Amiel has another winner! A Question of Proof is a legal thriller, taut with suspense, you won't be able to put it down. ~Barry Reed, author of The Verdict and The Choice

I am not done with the book, and I am not sure I can finish it. It jumped from first person using the defense lawyer to first person of the jilted rich woman and back, and now we have introduced yet another first person in the form of a detective. Also, we know that Peter is dead because it tells us this in the prologue. Then the story jumps back 4 months, and as things happen during those 4 months, we don't have any clear reference of how the time passes. Suddenly a third woman is dead and we don't know if it was a week after the beginning, a month, two months, nothing clear. Also, editing-wise, at one point Cal turns to Cal. Really? How could they have missed that? The defense attorney is not likable. The rich woman seems so pathetic, even though the author's written word is saying otherwise. The angry adolescent who "hates" her mother is so overdone. There just aren't any characters to like in this story. As readers, we want to relate to somebody, and there isn't anyone. I laugh when I read the 5 star ratings. It's not anywhere near there, not even close. The writer likes to throw in historical Philly facts, and that adds a little flavor, but it doesn't add enough to compensate for the uneven, silly story. I recommend to save your money.

Dan Lazar is a lawyer with a reputation of defending Philadelphia’s more questionable criminal element, and it is during his high profile defense of a low-level pimp against charges of being a notorious serial rapist-murderer that he is introduced to Peter Boelter, the owner and publisher of the major newspaper, the Philadelphia Herald, and his beautiful socialist wife, Susan. After successfully defending his client by breaking down a key witness, Dan suddenly finds himself the target of a baseless accusation of witness tampering and bribery that threatens his career. Meanwhile, when Susan defies Peter on a stock vote regarding the paper, she is suddenly faced with a devastating divorce suit designed to strip her of any money, child custody or dignity. Susan reaches out to Dan for help and the two become lovers. But after Peter is found dead and evidence begins to point to Susan, Dan faces a conflict of interest in defending a woman he is having an affair with. For the most part, the story is well-written, deeply complex and keeps the reader’s interest in the mystery. There are some unlikely coincidences that are designed to extend the suspense, and at times, the scales of justice are pushed a little too off-balance to create more pressure than necessary, but the main characters’ conflict over truth, justice and desire are well-explored.

Uneven writing, some just plain terrible. For example, the author describes a sharp-edged blunt instrument. That's an oxymoron. Poorly constructed sentences, such as the one describing the man who found a job as a waiter and a wife. The main character and the love interest fall into and out of love numerous times as he becomes convinced she's a murderess, then not, then yes, then no. No relationship could realistically survive this. And the scenes in the courtroom are simply not credible. No judge would tolerate the direct address by one attorney to he other.Very weak all around.

a well written book, which suddenly turns from a legal mystery to a who done it! i dont understand this compulsion in writers, when they run out of legal ideas they turn to unnecessary story complications! so this turns out to be another pot pourri of love story, murder, politics and confused lawyer. still the author's writing style is good enough to keep you reading it till the end.

Generally OK .However the story line dragged a lot almost to the point of tossing it aside.Action did pick up a little after midpoint .The ending was completely in believable particularly in light of earlier descriptions of his devotion to truth and the law . In essence, there are too many surprising twists at the end and final sentence destroys entire book

This was a good book. The story moved along and the characters were believable and entertaining. My guess of the murderer was right in the end but the story had so many twists and turns that I wasn't really sure until the author revealed it. What I liked best though was the author's writing. Interspersed with this fast paced murder mystery were all these gems of insight and philosophy about life and love and justice and other ponderings as the main character talked to himself about what was going on. Loved the style of writing, kept my interest throughout.

Joe Amiel created a delicious cocktail of greed, betrayal, murder and, oh yes, sex. I was up until 4:00 this a.m. to finish this book because I could not stand the suspense of "who done it" any longer. In this well-crafted novel you won't find out until the very end. The michigas of the cast of fascinating characters makes for a delightful read and the social/historic background Mr. Amiel manages to add, without slowing down the action, gives them solidity and dimension. Can't wait until the Kindle release of his next novel.

This is the first book that I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. For those that love being on the side of the defense in courtroom drama you will love this book. It has everything; unexpected twists and turns, romance without lewd descriptions, surprises that you just don't see coming, characters that aren't who they appear to be. You will be part of the main characters personal problems such as divorce and children that many people can relate to today, his relationship with fellow attorneys who will do anything to further their station in life, and above all the job of a defense attorney to defend someone at all cost, and the repercussions of just doing his job. I highly recommend this book, a good book without being too deep. One that moves fast and holds the readers interest throughout, and most of all it keeps you guessing till the end.
