Female Masculinity

Amazon.com Review

Readers who have followed the postmodern gender debate in the university presses (ranging from Thais Morgan's sedately twisted analyses of Victorian male lesbianism to Judith Butler's acclaimed Gender Trouble) will delight in the latest little earthquake: Judith Halberstam's deft separation of masculinity from the male body in Female Masculinity. If what we call "masculinity" is taken to be "a naturalized relation between maleness and power," Halberstam argues, "then it makes little sense to examine men for the contours of that masculinity's social construction." We can learn more from other embodiments of masculinity, like those found in drag-king performances, in the sexual stance of the stone butch, and in female-to-male transgenderism. Halberstam's subject is so new to critical discourse that her approach can be somewhat scattershot--there is simply too much to say--but her prose is lucid and deliberate, and her attitude refreshingly relaxed. Essential reading for gender studies and a lively contribution to cultural studies in general. --Regina Marler

From Library Journal

Halberstam (literature, Univ. of California, San Diego; Skin Shows: Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters, Duke Univ., 1995) presents a unique offering in queer studies: a study of the masculine lesbian woman. Halberstam makes a compelling argument for a more flexible taxonomy of masculinity, including not only men, who have historically held the power in society, but also women who embody qualities that are usually associated with maleness, such as strength, authority, and independence. Fleshing out her argument by drawing on a variety of sources?fiction, films, court documents, and diaries?Halberstam calls for society to acknowledge masculine lesbian women and value them. A dense work that requires some knowledge of gay studies, this is recommended for academic libraries and will appeal to scholars in gay studies, gender studies, women's studies, film studies, and sociology.?Kimberly L. Though it is part of a larger assortment of resources now, when this book of critical thought was released very little work had been done in the arena of analyzing the masculine female. The collected articles draw on a range of popular culture sources- books, film, tv, and art. It can be a dense read at times, but anyone with a background in gender or queer theory should recognize some of her reference material. I also found that occasionally Halberstam drifted into the realm of sweeping generalization about masculine females that seemed unsupported. All in all, a thought-provoking read on the masculine female as depicted in popular culture and what it means to society when a female has male privilege.

A great read, Jack is a spectacular and seminal queer theorist. However, I really wish that Jack had made more space for female masculinity in a heterosexual space in this book. Obviously, there is something inherently queer about "female masculinity" but as a gender theorist and a self identified masculine female who is very much sexually attracted to men, I find myself continually frustrated by the equation of female masculinity with attraction to women. Of course there's also the fact that Jack's writing is informed by personal experience in queer communities. But really, such a frustrating elision.

Essential reading for anyone studying gender theory, cultural studies, or LGBT studies. Halberstam's writing is very clear and easy to understand while being incredibly insightful and brilliant. Book is filled with really insightful cultural analysis (films, books, etc) as well as related images. A valuable resource for further study. Undoubtedly theoretical in nature, but very readable, I would highly recommend this text.

Brilliant important work.

Excellent treatise on an invisible subject. A little outdated, but still a seminal work.

I'm not a big fan of Halberstam's structure of argumentation, but if you are interested in female masculinity, you need to read this book.

good price, fast response

It was the thinking I needed to help me write my own book on women's bands and performing gender.

I am a professional tutoring and academic coach with my own company in Manhattan. The redesigned SAT has presented new challenges for test prep educators such as myself, due to the lack of good practice materials available. The College Board has only released four official tests, and third-party materials tend not to capture the essence of the real test especially well. However, this is not the case with this book. It is a wonderful supplement to the official College Board materials, as most of the book is "guided practice" - collections of practice problems arranged by topic for Reading, Writing, and Math. For students who have particular difficulties with, say, exponents and radicals, or function notation, or subject-verb agreement, etc, there are groups of questions to hone in on and strengthen those particular skills. After all the guided practice, the book includes one full-length practice test at the end.Another benefit of this text is that there is little to no "filler," as there is in so many other test-prep books. The cover says "1500+ practice questions," and that is what you get - just plenty of practice, practice, practice. As a test-prep educator, that's exactly what I want and need from my materials, without the extra weight in my bag of all the unnecessary introductory materials that typically take up half of a large prep book. The test also includes answer explanations in the back, so it can be used for independent study, as well as in a one-on-one or group tutoring setting. I would absolutely recommend this book over the other third-party books that are out there.

Great book for giving drills and practice problems to students, especially if they need help with specific question types.I use this book in my SAT courses and it helps them hone in on those small areas they a little more practice in.

My daughter is taking the SAT this spring and this is the book she takes to school with her in case she has any time to practice any problems during school. It has the problems sectioned out depending upon which section of the test she wants to practice and that makes it easy to focus on one topic or another. This type of practice will help her increase her speed in taking the SAT, bacause she will be better versed in those sections that she is practicing. She is also studying with The Official SAT Study guide which includes 4 full SAT's and the answers and explainations of those answers. The problem with just taking SAT's over and over again, is that she wants to raise her SAT score, and to do that she must practice those sections that she is making the most mistakes. Why should she practice sections in that she is scoring high? This book helps her to fucus on those sections that she is making the most mistakes.

Math part and writing sections impeccables: the best one. (With excelent solution to the questions)Don’t buy this book expecting awesome essay prompts. However, one of the best books in the market.

One of the best workbooks for sat takers. What I liked the most about the book is that unlike the other workbooks that often do not have clear logic behind their explanation for the answers, Tutorverse has very logical explanations.Worth buying.

Great quality and very affordable.

A lot of good practice questions.

There are so many exercises here. All categorized by topic. Superb prep material.

100 recipes? Not 100 original recipes. There were recipes repeated word for word on different pages (e.g., Oreo Rice Krispie Treats, Pumpkin Muddy Buddies) plus recipes that were almost identical except for a change in ingredient proportions or one ingredient. See attached photos for examples. This was done throughout the book. It looks like someone came up with the number 100 and then the author had to make as many variations of a few basic recipes (mostly involving Rice Krispie treats, or popcorn/pretzels with candy melts) as possible to make up that number. I will definitely be returning this book. Very deceptive. Also, note - absolutely no images at all in book, despite some recipes having opaque decorating instructions. So disappointing. My son said the author cheated. Yep, that's about right.

The recipes sound good but it is very disappointing there are no photos to see how the dish should look.

This book has so many great recipes. It has some that are easy to make and fun for kids. While there are others that take a little more prep and cook time. Either way this is a book that can be used to help make your Halloween celebration delicious.

I own several cookbooks by this great chef and I find the love she puts in everyone of them. I really enjoy the meals I prepare. And the snacks and appetizers also. And lot of her recipes are also healthy to. Thank you and enjoy your day.

Unfortunately without pictures you have no idea what you are creating or making and what the outcome is going to be. I did see other reviews that said the same thing.

Easy & fun for kids to do. Most recipes were ingredients you have on hand already.Would recommend this book.

This Book is going to get used a lot the RECIPES look FUN and easy !!!! Thank you very much !!!!!

Lots of themed recipes, interesting for Halloween parties. Though some are more about decoration than cooking.

While the title of Vickie Kall’s new book may suggest a memoir or Christmas book, The Boomer Book of Christmas Memories is a captivating cultural and historical reminiscence about everything from the origin of the TV dinner to stories of Radio Flyer Wagons and Honey Baked Hams.It is not a personal story, yet is personally appealing for so many reasons. That said, The Boomer Book remains a fabulous Christmas gift, one directed at the Boomer generation as much as it is to anyone who can’t get through the holidays without listening to Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” buying tickets for The Nutcracker Ballet, or smothering a pumpkin pie with Reddi-Whip.For me, although a bit before the Boomer era, I will never forget receiving a Betsy Wetsy Doll “from Santa Claus,” and screaming with delight when Betsy cried real tears, drank from a tiny baby bottle and wet her diapers. I so loved A Charlie Brown Christmas that I can watch it today with the same enthusiasm. And—as an adult—I started my daughter on a collection of Madame Alexander Dolls, which were priceless to me as an adolescent (especially the Little Women set) and are now priceless for real.Want to revisit such things? Learn how Magic Rocks, Troll Dolls and Easy-Bake Ovens became the rage?Another favorite for so many was the Shirley Temple Doll, modeled after the huge child star of the 1930s. But did you know that a new version was produced by Ideal in 1958?“The reason,” Kall writes in her fascinating book, was because the “grown-up Shirley Temple now had a TV show, The Shirley Temple Storybook. Even though the actress was clearly an adult and wore glamorous gowns on the show, the dolls depicted Shirley as the beloved little girl of classic movie fame.”The doll came with outfits from her films, Kall writes, “as well as original designs, and since the doll came in five heights, from 12 inches to 36 inches, there were lots of clothes to collect that are still sought after today.”The book brings back so many fabulous memories, especially photos of TV dinners, which I only too well remember. One of my favorite stories that Kall dug up concerns how “ten refrigerated railroad cars full of unsold frozen turkeys” manifest into those frozen delights (some not so much) that came in compartmentalized ten plates so easy to pop in the over.“Half a million iced gobblers!” Kall writes. “They were in Omaha, and the only available storage space was on the East Coast. But was it worth shipping them? Even unthawed, those birds wouldn’t last till the next holiday season began.”It took Gerry Thomas to come up with the “outrageous idea of cooking and packaging the turkey in individual metal trays.” Everyone laughed, everyone but the Swanson brothers, who allowed Thomas to create about 6,000 meals. They were sold for a buck each. You have only to glance at the old photo of a “Swanson Night” package to have the memories flood back, especially the photo of one of the first boxes, which pictures a turkey dinner on the face of a TV set.The stories are endless and endlessly fascinating, from the saga of how the Catholic Church resented Jimmy Boyd singing the 1952 version of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”, to how Queen Victoria decorated her Christmas tree in Windsor Castle.Whether for a gift, or to reminisce, the book is a wonderful keepsake you will refer back to again and again.

Although the title says this book is Christmas memories, it really covers a much broader range of baby boomer memories, including snack foods, toys, and fads. Do you remember pet rocks, TV dinners in metal trays, Chatty Cathy, Skipper & Midge, and metal slinkies? This book has chapters on Christmas decorations, popular Christmas music, boomer food, boomer candies, general toys, dolls, outdoor toys, and more. This book really brought back a lot of memories, and was very informative. One note for Kindle readers, the font size was smaller than normal. You can increase the size, but the maximum size font was not as big as it is for most books. I was able to get the font big enough for my poor eyes, but it was odd that the font sizing was different than normal.

I really like this book. At first I was a little unhappy about the size...it's a BIG book...but I'm over it now. I just love all the Christmas memories, visions? dancing like sugar plums in my....no Im not going to finish that. I got carried away there. But I have to tell you, when I read about Patty Play Pal and Chatty Cathy, I remember like it was just this past Christmas...right down to the tinsel on the tree, (which we can no longer have because the goofy cats want to eat it. Do you know what happens when a cat eats tinsel off the tree? Sparkly hair balls, or sparkly...never mind...you know.. You'd think it would be kind of pretty...but it is not....it makes them sick. But I digress; those were my favorite dolls and this toddler was thrilled when Santa put them under the tree. Not both on the same year...but you knew that.

A great Christmas book to have and enjoy whether that you lived in that time or not. There was still an innocence left even though Betty Crocker tried 50 ways to entice you to make powdered mashed potatoes the centerpiece of your holiday meal.Of course, our family didn't celebrate Christmas but it was not for lack of trying on my part. I tried to justify to my parents to buy an aluminum Christmas tree with the color wheel just like my friends Randy and Dennis had that it wasn't REALLY a Christmas tree because it wasn't a spruce or a Douglas fir but something else more All-American and religion neutral. Alas, my folks bought neither my argument or the tree and I had to be content with our non-shiny menorah that had candles that burned in only one color. Still we looked in the store windows, watched and loved "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and had our wish lists just like the Christian kids everywhere and hoped Hanukkah Harry was as generous to us as Santa was to them. Sit down with a three bean casserole and some fruit cake and enjoy this book.

Yes, Christmas is mentioned. Very briefly, and the author doesn't go into detail about trends, trees, wrap and ornaments. The bulk of the book is about favorite toys, their origins and manufacturers. If you're interested in the history of those who invented Silly Putty and Matchbox cars you're in for a treat. But be warned: There's a strange paucity of illustrations and because Christmas is glossed over, it's more for the toy than the holiday aficionado.

As other reviewers have noted, Daniel Mendelssohn skillfully interweaves a compelling father and son narrative along with erudite commentary on the text of the Odyssey in this book. The prose is superb, the characters engaging and the narrative makes the reader interested enough to continue reading. What other reviewers seem to have missed is that the book itself literally is An Odyssey. That is, after describing the literary techniques and themes in Homer's Odyssey Mendelssohn employs the same techniques in relating his story. Look for examples such as ring circles in Mendelssohn's narrative, characters who both hide and reveal their personality and parallels such as Odysseus traveling to the underworld and then the real life characters in turn traveling to Hades symbolically. What this means is that Mendelssohn has not only weaved a story about fathers and sons into a book on the Odyssey but has actually written an Odyssey of his own in this same interweaving. The degree of care and meticulousness this craft demanded must have been immense. In short, this is not just a literary commentary, nor is it just a memoir. It is a full fledged work of art in which the author ingeniously casts both of these genres into a Homeric literary form.

Spectacular on every level. I loved The Lost, and eagerly anticipated diving into An Odyssey. Having read the Epic a number of times, I was familiar with the characters/story. This book brought it to life. I listened to it via Audible. Bronson Pinchot was absolutely brilliant, especially in the father's voice. Anyone who had a dad of that generation will find the portrayal of the father poignant yet spot on, definitely not a caricature. I thought my dear , clever, deceased dad who hailed from Bay RIdge Brooklyn, and won his not-the best-high school's Math award, was in the room.Though the paralleling seemed at times a bit forced, I loved the effort as the tale unfolded. The author's discovery phase towards the end of the book was truly revelatory. Not a lot of adjectives, just the facts, ma'am. A gorgeous rendering of a father/son relationship. At the end of the day, is it a sin to strive for parental approbation? Not if it results in a paean this wonderful. Thank you, yet again, Mr Mendellsohn. Your father was very proud of you. Of that I am certain.

I read this book in an absurdly short period of time. The subject matter was engrossing, funny and heartbreaking. I felt like I knew Jay, as well as the other students in the class. Everyone pops off the page. The way Mendelson writes is elegant, but this is not a pretentious memoir. Although he and his father are both brilliant, they are also practical men—and gritty in the best way possible. I adored the passion with which Jay pursued his Odyssean education. It's an excellent reminder to all of us that sometimes life lessons don't come packaged neatly. Getting to the heart of a matter may take time, but it is always worth it. I also enjoyed the way the author used a circular kind of structure to weave his own tale. Very mathematical. Jay would be very proud, I think!

Daniel Mendelsohn, a Classics professor at Bard College, has written "An Odyssey: A Father, a Son, and an Epic", a book, a memoir, almost a dissertation on what seem to be two of his favorite subjects, family and classical literature. An earlier book, "The Lost: The Search for Six of the Six Million", covered the same subjects, but with a different orientation.Mendelsohn writes about a year in which he both taught a class at Bard College on "The Odyssey" and took a Greek island cruise which traces Odysseus's 20 year journey. Although his seminar at Bard was for college students, he asked his early 80's father, Jay, to attend the seminar and to take the cruise with him. Daniel had been at odds with his father for years; Jay was famously a brilliant and taciturn man, married to his wife for over 60 years and was the father of five children. Daniel had long tried to understand his father and felt that Jay, with a long interest in the classics and Greek, might benefit from studying that father-son (and grandfather) epic, "The Odyssey" together. Many people have written memoirs about their parents. Most never quite make that final leap to understanding their father's actions, their mother's thoughts. As children we might know what our parents have done, but we usually don't know what they feel. Daniel Mendelsohn intersperses what happened in the family's past with passages from "The Odyssey". How Odysseus felt after not seeing his home, his wife, his father, and his son for twenty years can't exactly be paired with a man's life two thousand years later, but just the working through the passages of the epic with his father helped bring the two closer and helps Daniel understand - a bit - about his father.I am not a classicist. I've never read any of the epic poems Daniel Mendelsohn writes about in "An Odyssey",in English, let alone in the original Greek. I enjoyed his previous book, "The Six" better, but then I am an armchair historian and have read a lot about the Holocaust. So, I was a bit in uncharted waters when I began reading "An Odyssey". But I had enjoyed Mendelsohn's references to classical studies in "The Six" - yes, he managed to combine personal history and the classics in that book, as well - and so I looked forward to reading his new book. I'd say I understood most of it but thoroughly enjoyed it.

Amazon.com Review

Featured Guest Review by William J. Bernstein There's something rotten at the core of the American financial system; we all know it. Before I go any further, I'll have to put my own biases on the table. While I'm in general a big believer in the power of free markets, there are certain things they don't do particularly well. Consider, for example, airline safety. Free market fundamentalism would dictate leaving it in the hands of consumers, who would logically shun those companies that killed too many passengers. We're smarter than that, of course; in large part because of government regulation, the average year passes without a major airline crash. Ditto the interstate highway system; does anyone really believe that Smith's invisible hand would have produced anything like this gem at the heart of our economy had not Dwight Eisenhower not been so impressed with Hitler's autobahns? Of course, there are some activities that the government should stay out of: it should regulate airlines, but it shouldn't run them; and it shouldn't produce food, automobiles, and almost all other goods. This begs a much larger question: just where do free markets fail? Which brings me to Jack Bogle's marvelous book about American finance, a system that, as we've seen in the past few years, has failed in a number of areas. As the author shows, it has done so by maximizing profits for managers, minimizing them for owners, and the customer be damned. For more than half a century, Mr. Bogle has not only observed this evolving spiral of immorality and self-interest from the inside, but has also been instrumental in creating, almost singlehandedly, what is thus far the major alternative to it: the customer-owned Vanguard Group. There's a paradox at the heart of The Clash of the Cultures that should rivet any capital markets participant: just how is that the more market oriented an investment company is, the poorer are its results? The author recounts in painful detail the sorry performance of mutual funds managed by the large publicly traded financial companies, and the poor stewardship at the heart of that failure. The superb performance of the funds run by Vanguard, which is essentially a non-profit organization, stands in stark contrast. And it's not just Vanguard; it turns out that TIAA-CREF, which is also essentially a non-profit, the government-run Thrift Savings Plan, and privately held fund companies all do much better than large publicly traded finance companies. It's as if, say, the Red Cross, Department of Labor, and Salvation Army had all founded nonprofit automobile manufacturers that turned out better and cheaper cars than General Motors and Toyota. Bogle identifies the speculative (as opposed to investment) mind set of the publicly traded companies as the chief culprit; because of their next-quarter/short-term focus, they trade frequently (as do their customers), pay scant attention to the costs of these activities, and often extract revenues from their funds and their shareholders in less ethical ways as well. But that's only part of the story. The Clash of the Cultures gets to the heart of this remarkable and, for our nation, critical, conundrum of how in some economic spheres, nonprofits can outperform the invisible hand. It's required reading for every concerned citizen and every worried investor, and food for thought for anyone with an open mind and a curiosity about the world.

Review

“The Clash of the Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation”   is a must read for investors who want to understand the forces that are working against them and what they can do about it to maximize their investment returns. It should come as no surprise to those who know Jack and his philosophy that the final words of his final book are:  ‘Stay the course!’—Forbes “The Clash of the Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation is . . . an enjoyable read that ends with 10 lessons for investors that, while simple, are deeply valuable to the general public. . . Clash of the Cultures is a great summary of the breadth of Bogle's 60-plus years in the investment field. He offers observations on the shocking change in the culture of finance that he has witnessed first-hand. Among the most important of the shifts is that short-term speculation has crowded out long-term investment. Though this has been great for the financial sector, it has come at the expense of the public.” —CBS MoneyWatch “Bogle, as the Godfather of index investing, has ideas that are timeless and based on simple math, and at the same time exhibit uncommon sense and a routinely overlooked view of how investors are consistently overcharged by the financial services industry. Fortunately, his wisdom is widely available to everyone. Much of that wisdom has been assembled in Bogle's most recent book The Clash of the Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation (Wiley, 2012). While most of the insights are time-honored themes in the Bogle canon, they are very useful for individual investors.” —Reuters “Bogle's latest book tackles what looks like an artificial distinction. His Clash of the Cultures title conjures thoughts of world war and social strife. But he's talking about ‘investment vs. speculation’. . .  As in his previous books, Bogle is a master of the clear point and the pithy quote - from the investment writings of John Maynard Keynes and Benjamin Graham, pension adviser Keith Ambachtsheer and Bogle's old mentor the late Walter L. Morgan, as well as the Gospels of Luke and John.”—Philadelphia Inquirer “You know what to expect when opening a book by John Bogle, founder of the Vanguard mutual fund group and inventor of index funds: a lament about the fall from grace of the US mutual fund industry, and a restatement of his strong conviction that COSTS MATTER!!!  Mr Bogle’s new book, The Clash of the Cultures , Investment vs Speculation, does not disappoint on either count, but it is also very much in tune with the zeitgeist in its focus on stewardship and fiduciary duty.  It lambasts US mutual fund managers for neglecting to act as responsible owners of the companies they invest in on behalf of the savers whose money they look after, and for their own governance failures.”—The Financial Times “[The Clash of the Cultures] echoes many familiar . . . themes worth repeating, because they are too often ignored. Investors spend so much time chasing hot asset classes and hot fund managers that they end up buying high and selling low, all the while incurring transaction costs. In Mr Bogle’s words, ‘investors need to understand not only the magic of compounding long-term returns, but the tyranny of compounding costs.’ . . . The American pension-fund industry has been particularly bad at understanding these long-run fundamentals. Many schemes assume, on the basis of past performance, a return of 7.5-8%, a figure that is highly implausible given the current low yields. . . Meanwhile, many employees in the private sector have been switched into defined-contribution schemes. . .  But employees are not saving enough, are not allocating their portfolios efficiently and are incurring too many costs. It is hard to disagree with Mr Bogle that the ‘system of retirement security is imperilled, heading for a serious train wreck.’ But will anybody listen to him, when they haven’t in the past?” —The Economist “John Bogle’s latest book, as much a piece of history as is it a playbook for how to repair financial markets scarred by two bear markets in 10 years and a loss of confidence, is one of those books on finance that ought not be left unread. The Clash of the Cultures is the latest and perhaps best book by the founder of Vanguard Group. . . Plus, for those not familiar with Bogle’s prose, the man can turn a phrase, which makes the book all the more enjoyable.”—IndexUniverse “If the Occupy Wall Street movement is serious about helping people with real financial issues, then its leaders should read John Bogle’s book and embrace his ideas for change.”—Rick Ferri, Forbes.com “John Bogle’s story is an oft-told tale, yet even Bogle junkies will learn some fascinating new facts from The Clash of the Cultures. Bogle takes of the cudgels on behalf of investors, who he believes have been poorly served by most of the industry. Bogle brings invaluable historical perspective to current issues ranging from high-frequency trading to the looming crisis in the U.S. retirement system to the use of mutual fund investors’ money to promote the growth of assets under management. Every thoughtful investor can benefit from his wisdom, served up with refreshing modesty by a giant in a field notorious for outsized egos.” —Financial Analysts Journal “The book is a gem. Well-researched and carefully argued, there's simply no way to argue with Bogle's premises -- that the little guy always loses, that the more you churn the more you lose, that most people's retirements are dramatically underfunded, that management looks out for itself and not the stockholders, and that greed is driving the bus. . . Read Bogle, not just to learn about how to protect your investments and understand what really happens on Wall Street. But more than that, read The Clash Of The Cultures and declare yourself into the three percent who have ideas and aren't afraid to use them.” —The Huffington Post

I was already a life-long fan of Jack Bogle and his low-cost index funds. I have probably read about 4 of his previous books. Since I was already familiar with Jack's work, there were few surprises for me in this book.As William Bernstein pointed out in his review, the large Wall Street investment firms have been a failure in terms of helping the average investor achieve his financial goals. Billions, yes billions of dollars are paid out in Wall Street bonuses every year, primarily for figuring out how to sell people and firms investments they should not buy. Just read a few books by people that worked on wall street for a few years...and you will get the idea. Many firms are legally bound not to buy investments that have too high of credit risk. Wall Street employees spend their time figuring out how to get poor investments rated as excellent so they can sell them.Someone recently pointed out the only innovation from Wall Street or the big banks in the last 25 years that has actually helped investors is the ATM. I would argue that Jack Bogle inventing the index fund was the best thing that happened to investors in the 20th century. If you have not read any of Jack Bogle's books, this is a good one to read. I found it encouraging that index fund stock investing now is about 28% of all money invested in stock mutual funds. Hopefully this percentage continues to trend higher as people figure out that Wall Street is not your friend.

Whether you are new to investing or a veteran, this should be a "must read." Indeed, the take-aways are very simple: If you want to succeed in investing, invest in index funds, and hold them long-term. Bogle eschews specialty investing (funds or equities other than broad market index funds), and he eschews speculation even more. So, in theory, one could take a pass on reading the book and walk away with this advice (which, actually, has been around forever)for free. But that's not the purpose of the book. What the book does is explain, in incredibly persuasive detail, WHY Bogle believes what he does, and why his approach makes sense. Unless you understand the realities of why his approach is preferable, then it is unlikely you will seriously consider his advice.Indeed, the book does have some shortfalls. Probably the most egregious shortfall is one that is common in virtually every "how to" or "self-improvement" book: failure to kick the readers in the butt and place some of the blame for their problems on themselves. Have you ever read a psychology "self-improvement" book that told the readers they were screwed up and that the problems they had were their own fault? Of course not. You don't want to get your readers angry, even though this is what they really need to hear. In "Clash of Cultures," Bogle NEVER blames individual investors for their problems (i.e., stock market losses). He blames everyone else possible: Congress, the judiciary, public accountants, the press, security analysts, corporate directors, fund managers, and so on. If you operate under the assumption that your problems are everyone else's fault, then you end up in "victim mode," and you wait around for the other people to decide to become honest and nice, so that your life can change. It ain't gonna happen. If you want to solve your problems, you have to take action yourself, and that involves placing the blame squarely where it belongs - on yourself. As the old saying goes, "When you point the finger of blame at someone else, there are three other fingers pointed right back at you." In other words, one shortcoming of this book is Bogle's reticence to make it clear that investors are responsible for themselves. More specifically, they can't expect to succeed unless and until they educate themselves. Handing money over to other people to manage for you, and then sitting back "fat, dumb and lazy" hoping the other people will do the right thing with your money and have your best interests at heart, is a prescription for disaster.Another shortcoming of the book is that, given Bogle's 61 years in the mutual fund industry, he has a fondness for it over other investment vehicles, such as ETFs. He doesn't bash ETFs. He simply points out the fact that people who own mutual funds tend to hold them for long periods of time, while people who own the same basket of stocks in ETFs tend to buy and sell on a regular basis. This isn't a slam against ETFs. It is a slam against the people who own the ETFs. In other words, there is no requirement that, if you purchase an ETF, you have to sell it quickly. Bogle does admit (but glosses over this fact very quickly in only a couple of phrases in a couple of sentences in the book as quickly as he can) that ETFs can be less expensive than mutual funds in terms of fees. As such, logic seems to dictate that, if you want to purchase a broad market fund and are willing to hold it for a long time, then an ETF makes much more sense than a mutual fund, simply because the ETF will have lower fees in the long run. Again, though, Bogle doesn't come right out and emphasize this.Other than these two shortcomings (letting individual investors off the hook and not more actively publicizing the lower costs of ETFs), this book is monumental. If you currently invest with a belief that you are smart enough to "beat the market" long-term and/or someone who prefers speculation (in and out buying and selling) to investment (buy and hold), reading this book might actually change your mind - and make you more money in the long run.

I spent 8 years in the "securities" business as a salesman and then 13 years as a trader using house money. As a salesman, I cannot tell you the number of players (customers) that got wiped clean based on my advice. As a trader, I was directly part of the casino, effectively using the house favoring odds to scrape off a fair amount of money from the players. As a young person in the business as a salesman I was operating under the belief that I was assisting people in making "investments" but actually I had them putting all their chips (money) on black number 33 - long, long shots that rarely if ever paid off. Jack Bogle has made it crystal clear that 99% of the''securities" business is nothing buy a giant casino. The old joke, "Where are the customers yachts?"finds its factual basis in this book. What an eye-opener!

I've read lots of investment books about market and investment strategies. Bogle presents a well written account of the changes that have occurred in recent decades including very high levels of turnover, the inherent conflict between fund managers and their customers, the creation of mutual funds, index funds, and ETFs. I found the comparison between fund managers (mutual, privately held, and publicly traded) to be facinating. I hadn't realized that so much money is paid to fund managers. I think he's right in comparing the "take" by fund managers to be similar to that by the house at casinos. As Bogle points out, the combined performance of all investors balances out to equal the market returns. The winners balance the losers. But, we all pay for management fees and commissions, which makes the management companies the real winners. Bogle has just about convinced me that a broad market index fund is the only way to go. I need to dig through my records and see just how well or poorly I've managed over the years. I rather suspect I'd have been much better off with with an S&P 500 index fund or broad market fund than my past approach. Even if you think you've been beating the market, you should read Bogle's book. It was truly an eye-opener for me.
