This book is brilliant. There are some racial references that can make some people uncomfortable, but the book is about kindness, generosity and yes, it is in a racial context. I read it to my Hispanic grandson (age 12) and he absolutely loved it. I read it to my African American foster grandkids (ages 9, 11 & 13) and they loved it. I'm the only one who squirmed a little reading it, wondering how the kids were going to react. They didn't. They loved the story, they loved Maniac Magee.

My mother read this book to me when I was 6 years old in the early 90s and I enjoyed it then. It was the first exposure I ever had to concepts of racism, poverty, adults who couldn't read, and homelessness. It had a profound impact on me at that age and 26 years later I just reread it with delight. As an adult I can appreciate the character development and elegant prose crafted by the author. It's a quick read with a hopeful message that rings as true now as it did when it was first written.

I'm in a rush so I don't have time to give an in-depth review, but I'll just say there's a reason this book is a classic. It's readable and relatable even today and touches on subjects that its readers are probably just now becoming sensitive of (5th/6th grade or thereabouts), even if the undercurrents have been around them until this time. It is at this age where many kids who weren't socially conscious before, become so now.My son got so much out of this book. It was an assignment, but most of the kids in his class seemed to read it eagerly (my son is already a reader so it was no problem for him).I highly recommend it.

Maniac Magee is a heart-warming book first published 25 years ago. It deals with racism and its effects on a young man who, though white, finds more warmth and kindness on the Black side of town than on "his own side." The characters are compelling, realistic, and will challenge whatever tendency you may have towards clustering with your own kind as a response to racial tension and injustice.I loved this book, and wanted it to go on and on. I have thought about it, and its vision of a better world, for the month since I finished it. Very well worth reading!

Awesome book! I ordered this book for my 10 year old boy. He rates the book as a 10 which is very good for a little one who does not like to read. There are certain parts of the book which makes him laugh and some parts of the book which makes him sad. The story is about kids from the East End and those from the West End......the kids become friends in spite of how the world looks at color.

i love maniac magee because it tells about a boy named Jeffory and his parents died on the p,w trolley train and he had to live with his aunt and uncle who hated eachother one day there was a school play and his aunt and uncle had so sit next to eachother.Jeffory screamed saying words for them to make up and ran away so one day he meats Amanda a random girl.Amanda had a suit and so Jeffory thought she was running away but instead she said no amanda had books inside.Jeffory asked for a book and she said no after that Jeoffry promised to bring it back tomorrow but instead he kept the book because he liked reading it.there were bullies and they threw a boy over a fence. The fence belonged to Finstedwald a scary person who keeps balls so when the bullies threw the boy over the fence Jeffory went over and got the boy. After that he went to dinner with the boy all the kids were saying who is that and it was Jeffory who helped a kid and got invited to dinner for food.Jeffory went to a baseball stadium and he beat the most pitcher in the west end so Jeffory makes alot of friends and they are all nice he sees no bad in a person only good.So now you see why i love Maniac magee its a cool book Jeffory makes frfiend gets a adress but lots of stuff happen and some are funny and some are serious plus Jeffory was hilarious you should read the book its my favorite.

The first half of Maniac Magee made me wonder why the book's been popular for a quarter century. The writing is excellent throughout, but initially I wasn't interested in Maniac or the other characters. The story reminded me of Paul Bunyan and other legendary folks who had mind-boggling abilities. I've never cared about tall tales. Then in about the middle of the book, everything changed. Maniac developed complex relationships. The questions and problems of the story became more involved and deeper. The issue of race grew into the central challenge. I started to care about both Maniac and other characters. By the end, I knew why the book has survived.

Maniac Magee was published 25 years ago, but it is as relevant today as it was when first written. The narrative is different from most books for middle school children. The diction is easy to follow, but the content is "quirky" enough (sorry I can't find the precise word) that it keeps interest active and the mind challenged. Spinelli develops Magee's character in the novel less by what he does (as is the usual way to develop character) but more by what happens around him.The dominant theme of the book seems to race relations. This book goes much much deeper. These deeper themes are developing honest relationship with others, being true to one's ownself, and the power of giving.I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. It is a great book to read aloud to children . . . and to adults.

Review

"One of Bloomberg Opinion's Favorite Nonfiction Books of 2018 (Stephen L. Carter)""One of our most provocative philosophers argues that if we can use force to stop others from hurting people unjustly, we can also use force to stop the government from hurting people unjustly."---Stephen L. Carter, Bloomberg Opinion"Provocative and entertaining. . . . Much of the book is Brennan defending his moral parity thesis from challenges, such as the social contract (we consent to government rule), good faith (agents are just doing their jobs as best as they can), and dangerous misapplication (dumb people will make terrible mistakes). Brennan deftly knocks down these objections one by one. . . . [His] thesis so radical is that he doesn't fetishize democracy. (This shouldn't be surprising for people familiar with his work--one recent book of his was titled Against Democracy.) When All Else Fails argues persuasively that even if a government agent or official is part of a popularly elected democratic regime, this doesn't magically confer immunity from defensive action when the agent or official engages in unjust, immoral actions."---Matt Harwood, Reason"This book is essential reading in an age in which political systems appear to be failing and in flux and populations are becoming insecure and distrustful of their governments. . . . It should stimulate a debate that we need to have."---Lisa McKenzie, Times Higher Education"A superb book. Brennan clearly and convincingly defends the radical idea that ordinary citizens may use force against injustice perpetrated by government officials, just as they would against fellow citizens."--Christopher Heath Wellman, Washington University in St. Louis

When All Else Fails by Jason Brennan is one of the most provocative books I've ever read. His thesis is simple, but profound: "The conditions under which a person may, in self-defense or the defense of others, deceive, lie to, sabotage, attack, or kill a fellow civilian, or destroy private property, are also conditions under which a civilian may do the same to a government agent (acting ex officio) or government property."Brennan's writing is clear, straightforward, and even entertaining. It should serve as a model for other philosophers. There aren't many philosophy books that made me laugh out loud. The most surpising thing I learned: the dominant view among contemporary political philosophers is that no states have authority. That is, if a state (even a liberal democratic state) enacts a new statute, that does not create in its citizens a moral duty to obey the statute.

This is a powerful book that argues, convincingly, that government and its agents are entitled to no special treatment when they misbehave, and are perfectly legitimate targets of self-defense. This is an argument that I have made myself, and that I've taken for granted, but which may well come as a shock to those who have been schooled to believe that governments are exempt from the moral rules that guide the actions of everybody else. Through scenarios and logic, Brennan capably makes his case that we have no more duty to submit to violence or abuse committed by employees of the state than we do to that inflicted by gangsters.
