I consider myself very social media savvy (email, texting, Facebook, etc.) for my age; it's necessary to stay up with the grand kids. But this book opened my eyes to the rapid cultural revolution society is undergoing in how communication takes place among humans. I viewed emails and texting simply as tools (like meetings and phone calls) to get something done (schedule something or confirm a event). I graduated from college in 1969 believing that important communications needed to be face-to-face----no more. The young generations are losing their ability to communicate directly as electronic devices become ever more capable. Confront a young professional to have a face-to-face conversation and expect to see a perplexed look on their face. I now better understand some of the social feelings behind the texts exchanged with younger professionals and the grand kids. The book dragged a little with an over abundance of examples where texting is taking over human communications. Then I read the chapter about texting and modern romance --- wow. The World had definitely changed when serious relationships begin and end via email and texting. I asked the interns in my office about this and their comment was: "Yes, so what's new?"What we are seeing today is akin to what happened to humanity after the invention of the printing press in the 1400's. Resisting change is no longer an option; we must adapt or fail. This book puts this modern communication phenomena in perspective to early baby boomers like me.

I’m 25. When I'm with friends, we have our phones out all the time, even at dinner and movies. And only sometimes, someone will object. I’ve never given much thought to why - actually I didn't even realize I had my phone in my hand 24/7. This book is a real eye-opener. When I’m busy on my phone, I did try to listen to what other people are saying, but I recognize now that I was barely paying attention to them.In this beautifully written, passionate book, Turkle discusses how what I’m doing has become how conversation has moved in the culture as a whole. So many of us divide our attention between our friends and our phones, between our co-workers and our email. Now in team meetings, I make sure to keep my phone in my bag and at dinner, I don't put it on the table. Turkle is not didactic or preachy, but this book is filled with great examples of the costs of a life lived with an eye to “elsewhere.” This is a great read and a real wake up call.

Have you watched Sherry Turkle's TED talk - Connected, But Alone? - which has more than 3 million views? If so, you already know she is a masterful communicator. She held a ballroom of 5000 American Society of Association Executives spellbound at their annual convention this summer with the backstory of her research for "Reclaiming Conversation."A few of the intriguing sound-bites from that talk (and this book) include:a. "We will always be lonely unless we learn to like being alone."b. "We let digital devices dictate our daily life at great cost. They are an assault on compassion."c. "What people want most is autonomy over where they put their attention."d. Studies report a 40% drop in empathy - which is the crucial ability to be present, put ourselves in the other person's shoes and imagine what they're feeling.e. People rather text than talk - because online they can take their time to edit and get it RIGHT.f. Even a silenced phone on a table changes the quality of conversation - because people are reluctant to go deep and be personal if they think they'll be interrupted.g. Our inability to be alone with our thoughts and our fear of conversation ("It's so open-ended, I can't control it:) is the new "Silent Spring."The good news is, this book is not just a cautionary tale. It has a prescription for how we can "make time and space for face-to-face."An important book that can help readers re-connect with what and who is most important - each other.

A wonderful observation of how easily the world has become addicted to technology, smart phones, facebook, twitter, etc. If used properly and confidently new age tools can be so extraordinary; however when you feel like you have no sense of self unless you are connected online in some form, carefully check the mirror to see if you still reflect Who You Really Are. Sherry Turkle does an outstanding job in her book Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk. Talking is our golden nugget to relating to each other. It gives real to the feel of being. Be very careful if you claim to be an introvert, remember People Make The World Go Around, So Embrace the Laws of Nature - Reclaim the power of your natural vibration by simply talking. Review

"Iversenas analysis of the political economy of the welfare state and redistribution is highly original and provocative. His theoretical approach, which focuses on risks, social insurance, and the development of human capital, manages to combine the strengths of power resources theory and its recent employer centered critics and thus to transcend that debate. The book is a real tour de force and is must reading for all scholars interested in the political economy of the welfare state." John Stephens, University of North Carolina"This is an excellent book, at the highest level of quality in its combination of innovative and important theory and argument, and sophisticated and well developed supporting empirical analysis. It brings to light how much we still don't know about the welfare state and its effects and underpinnings despite its now lengthy history and the innumerable works devoted to understanding its nature. The book is also substantially interdisciplinary, truly a work of political economy in the fullest sense of that term. Iversen's research will make a major mark on the field and become the source of much debate and further scholarship." Peter Lange, Duke University"This book provides a well informed, historically situated and comparative analysis of the evolution, divergence and current problems of employment and social protection in the political economies of highly industrialized democracies. It is lucid and highly accessible, not only to undergraduates but also to an interested public. It also combines the ambitious claim of theoretical integration between separate literatures with a series of sophisticated and sometimes highly innovative exercises in analytical modeling and statistical testing that should be of interest to graduate students specializing in institutional economics and comparative political institutions." Fritz Scharpf, Max Planck Institute for the Studies of Societies

Book Description

Markets, especially global ones, are widely assumed to be antithetical to a generous welfare state. This book shows why this is not necessarily the case. Based on the key idea that social protection in a modern economy, both inside and outside the state, can be understood as protection of specific investments in human capital, the book offers a systematic explanation of popular preferences for redistributive spending, the economic role of political parties and electoral systems, and labor market stratification (including gender inequality).

I love this book! It's use of colors, illustrations, and caricatured chess-piece personalities make this book very inviting for children and adult readers. Reading two fun pages gets chess players one step closer to winning, and feeling like it's all about fun, rather than cut-throat competition (though maybe, with application of all these lessons, a sweet chess-kid might be cut-throat without even knowing it :). I'm not a how-to book type of reader, but the colors and gumby-like chess pieces reeled me in.

Excellent resource for teaching young kids chess. Love this book! Also arrived on time as promised.

A very fun book for developing the skills of the game.
