Berleth explores the relationship of early settlers on the Mohawk frontier to the Iroquoian people who made their homes beside the great river. He introduces colonists and native leaders in all their diversity of culture and belief. I used sections of BLOODY MOHAWK to add to my notes on the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. There are a number of sections that as you read the text one can't put the book down. The strategic location of the Mohawk Valley plays out in both wars. The battles and the setbacks that the American militia and New York settlements suffered at the deadly attacks by the Iroquois tribes. These attacks led by Chief Joseph Brant, during the American Revolution caused the frontier pioneers to suffer horrendous losses. Needless to say these setbacks would stretch over into the 1790s as the Native American tribes attempted to keep New Yorkers and new settlers from moving westward through the Mohawk Valley.This is one book I thoroughly enjoyed, especially the maps of the Mohawk Valley and the wonderfully written history of the area. Like I said earlier, this book added some notes to my US History class at Spartanburg Community College. If one is interested in this area of history, which is shown in the 1940 movie - "Drums Along The Mohawk" - then I highly recommend this book.Ben L.

I should like to think that I'm fairly comfortable with the history of the American Revolution inclusive of the wilderness campaign conducted by George Rogers Clark, but this book was enlightening. Whereas, most of the common knowledge dealing with New York centers upon Long Island, Westchester, Lake Champlain, and Saratoga, Fort Stanwix on the Mohawk is usually given a short shrift. Berleth skips most of the common stuff, but focuses on the guerilla campaign of the Royalists and Iroquoian League all along the Mohawk (Tenonatche) to include the foray into the Wilkes Barre area (Wyoming Massacre). One can deduce that the Senecas and Mohawks were not very nice people while the Oneidas, who supported the colonists, were a bit more gentle. The people that lived during this time were nothing but courageous. The book itself is well put together with exception of the maps. It is recommended that the reader first locate all the maps in the text and mark them for constant reference; otherwise, the maps in the general reading area will not be sufficiently informative. This reader actually looked up maps online before realizing the areas covered were actually in the book, but at the far end of the text.

The Mohawk River Valley is the only significant, natural passage through the 2,000 mile long Appalachian Mountains. For over 200 years, the Iroquois League controlled this strategic thoroughfare, and thus all trade with the interior of the continent as far west as the Mississippi River. European settlement came after the close of Queen Anne's War when Britain encouraged Germans from the Palatinate to begin settling in the valley after 1713. The first English settlers came in 1738 under William Johnston, the man who would ultimately destroy the Iroquois League during the French and Indian War. It was Johnson who would contend with the Dutch inhabitants at Albany as events led up to the American Revolution.Three different wars in the course of 200 years left their mark on this critical passage. French, English, American and Native Americans would make this strategic corridor the most heavily contested real estate on the North American continent. The most savage Native American battles were fought here, with massacres making Custer's Last Stand looking like child's play. Through the Mohawk and the Lake Champlain valleys Britain would defeat France during the French and Indian War. During the American Revolution more men died in the little known Battle of Oriskany than in any other battle, including Saratoga, Yorktown and Bunker Hill. The carnage was simply appalling. In the end, thousands of Loyalists, including the remaining Iroquois, were uprooted and driven into Canada, never to return. And only 40 years later, the completion of the Erie Canal would forever change trading patterns on the North American Continent making New York City the preeminent mercantile center of our Nation and, ultimately, of the world. This is a most amazing story and Richard Berleth's Bloody Mohawk chronicles these wars and the evolution of these events.I haven't read a book this good in a long, long time. I have always had an interest in the development and settlement of early America's northeast frontier and while the author claims there is really nothing new here, I strenuously beg to differ. I found Richard Berleth's approach to the history of the Mohawk Valley and its contiguous early American thoroughfares provided a clearer and more succinct understanding of the region's early history than any previous work I have enjoyed. Bloody Mohawk is so good it makes you want to vacation here in order to better understand the terrain and then reread this book for an even better level of understanding.I found this work a remarkable achievement.

I am not sure why people love this so much. I bought it because I am starting an apprenticeship in MA. I am a relatively new adult rider and I was looking for a very broken-down reference manual. I will be keeping this for its various useful bits but it is not going to be my go-to by any means.Writing: I knew this was supposed to be oriented towards young riders but I find the way this is written just ludicrous. If you're old enough to READ all the words in this book, you are certainly old enough not to be spoken to like a toddler.Organization: This book covers cantering before it covers the parts of a horse. It casually references parts of a bridle without giving any detailed illustration of a bridle. I am not sure who it's supposed to be helping. Real beginners will be using the internet or other books for reference to understand what's going on in many parts here. (Another example: It says don't grip with the knees for a rising trot, and don't push out of the stirrups, but never tells you what part of your leg you SHOULD be using.)Illustrations: Sometimes useful, sometimes not so much. And for a book oriented towards young riders (though see above comment), I can't imagine who thought the very long blocks of text interspersed with the occasional line drawing was the right way to capture kids' attention.All in all, this is a clunky reference manual. It is not an enjoyable read, but it does have some good basic information -- even if it's a bit haphazardly scattered.

This is a terrific update of the USPC's previous manual for its most advanced members. It is a super resource for adult riders/owners, and a great review for instructors and coaches. Clear diagrams are expected of Susan Harris, and the manual doesn't disappoint. In these times when riders are criticized for not understanding basic horsemastership as it used to be taught, here is a way to catch up on current good practice in riding and working with horses.

My daughter has been a member of United States Pony Club for two years. Their programs and education are exceptional. This book is just one example of many excellent resources.

Every youth equestrian and their parent should read this book before buying or leasing a horse. It walks you through all of the basics of riding and care particularly for the parents that might not be present for part or all of their child's lesson. The most comprehensive book I've read to get you started with horses, For less than the price of one riding lesson, you will have a huge amount of information at your fingertips. Great illustrations and descriptions. I buy several when on sale, and give to new horse owners.

I suppose this book is quite good, but I originally bought it for my job. After I was fired, I didn't need it so much. I made it about a quarter of the way through. Seems like a pretty good book for learning ERP systems.

Another excellent translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. If you've read other translations of this book---mis-titled in earlier versions---you will feel you are reading it for the first time. Notes from a Dead House, in this translation, is also a good introduction for readers just getting into Dostoevsky, because it raises so many of the ethical and moral concerns in his later books, though only in outline here. We're fortunate to have the many fresh translations that Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have produced; any of them will make you want to read all of Dostoevsky, or reread him again as if for the first time.

I have been reading Dostoyevsky for 20 years. Dostoyevsky's writing changed dramatically by his prison camp experience. It took on meaning that his earlier works did not have. Therefore reading this work has it's importance regarding what shaped the Dostoevsky of novels like "The Brothers Karmazov". Suffering brings clarity to what life means when it's stripped of pride, self reliance, and selfishness. You see although he didn't state it in the work, through his suffering Dostoyevsky discovered the nature of God, Christ, and himself. That clearly comes through his later works.

This novel has a few moments of important and well stated insight to the human condition but overall its dry delivery left me unimpressed. The Gulag Archipelago is more insightful for prison life.

My love for the writing of Fyodor Dostoevsky has been passed down to the next two generations. It is no accident that one of my grandson's bears the middle name of Fyodor! The author's memoir about prison life - thinly disguised as a novel, has undergone a stunning and beautiful new translation at the hands of the gifted husband and wife team of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.Dostoevsky was initially sentenced to die by firing squad for his involvement in a Utopian socialist discussion group. The CTsar commuted his sentence to four years in Siberia. This book, "Notes From A Dead House" represents Dosoevsky's memories of those years, smuggled out of the prison in bits and pieces.Most striking in this narrative is the transformation that the aristocratic protagonist undergoes as he begins to recognize the common humanity that he shares with many of the prisoners - even with the least likable among them. The language in this marvelous translation is rich and evocative. The characters we meet are memorable and idiosyncratic, in many cases giving hints at future fictional characters like Raskolnikov and members of the Karamazov family.For any fan of Dostoevsky's remarkable oeuvre, this book is a welcome addition to your library.

It’s too bad the physical book was so damaged when I got it. The pages weren’t cut evenly and the front cover had a massive crease on it I couldn’t manage. I read it anyways though - great book but buy it from someone else
