For me I absolutely loved this story. I had purchased on my kindle for a while before actually starting to read it but when I did I couldn't put it down. It was an interesting read because the take on the main character being blind and having a very sheltered upbringing lead her down a rocky path when she actually gained her eyesight back after her parents death. She was thrown for a loop from here and had to get herself together quick. With her only mentors then dead it left her to figure out a lot of things on her own, which sometimes meant trusting the wrong person by letting her unexplained emotions get the best of her. This series has such a different take on the whole werewolf/supernatural genre and I loved it. When I finished this book I immediately started reading the second book in the series. I happen to enjoy the characters as it seems the author develops them in a way that leaves so much more room for their character to build.

Not at all what I expected - on Kindle but no cover so the story was a complete surprise. Very well done except I have one little quibble - the girl is a bit too vacillating, loving/hating/running away from/to ... it's a bit tiring. That being said, however, the writing was excellent with only a lew little typos that a thorough proofread would fix (remember spellcheck doesn't fix words correctly spelled but used incorrectly). Still well worth reading.

I had no idea what this book was about going into it and I really enjoyed seeing how this story unfolded. It was fun being in the dark along with the main character, asking the same questions she was asking and being right there with her as information was slowly revealed. This is the story of Ruby, a 28-year-old woman, who mysteriously survived a brutal attack that killed her parents. She had lived a very sheltered life with her over-protective parents, and suddenly finds herself on her own. Circumstances lead her to meet two hot and hunky alpha males - Eric and Sean - who have an unknown history together and violently hate each other. This sets up what we think is going to be a somewhat predictable, yet intense and interesting love triangle. What I loved about this book is that nothing is as it seems.I kept anticipating the story between these individuals to unfold as many love triangles do, with a clear winner and the "good guy vs. the bad guy" being identified. But it never happened. Who are these mysterious men? Why do they hate each other? What is the secret they are trying to keep from Ruby? What is their motivation and ulterior motive? These are all questions I kept asking myself gleefully through much of this book. I'm a sucker for a story that isn't quite so black and white. Just when you think she placed her trust in the right guy, she finds herself betrayed and abused in horrible ways. The story was always one step ahead of where I thought it was going - and then enters a third hotty toward the back half of the book!Ruby has fallen into a dangerous and mysterious world, where it becomes very difficult to tell who can be trusted and who is going to betray (or kill) her. She eventually comes to learn that she is a vicious and powerful creature herself, and hunted by muliples groups with their own hidden agendas.I enjoyed the quick witted dialog and some of the saracstic interactions between these characters. Although Ruby is quite naive for a 28-year-old, the story is set up in such a way that we understand why (she grew up blind and sheltered, only very recently regaining her site). The paranormal element was introduced later in the story than might be expected, but I enjoyed the suspense and mystery that it set up as we try to understand what is going in this story. The end provided a small twist that will draw many readers, including myself, to the next book in this series.

I like the idea behind the characters, but I think I hate Ruby. Granted, she is at a great disadvantage in regards to many things but she just comes off as dim witted. Talk about bad decision making. Even with as little information, she could make better choices. I'm giving this series a second chance and will read book two because I'm interested in Sean's character. I rated this a three star because when I don't focus on the leading character and all that she lacks, I found that I was intrigued and entertained. Here is hoping we get to learn more about this world and its factions, and maybe let the leading character gain some wisdom and knowledge. I guess my biggest complaint is that I couldn't connect with the main character. I couldn't even hold on to my sympathy for her.

First up, the overall story is quite good. Ruby is an interesting character, and the plot moves along nicely without making it too easy to figure out what's going on. I enjoyed reading it thoroughly.Unfortunately, there were a few annoyances. First, I find odd how obsessed a woman who has been blind almost her entire life is with clothes. The descriptions of her various outfits are tedious and get very old, very fast. Second, Ruby can be a blithering idiot at times. This is all justified with repeated references to having not been socialized, etc, etc, but there comes a point when she really needs to quit making assumptions and start talking to people.Of course, Ruby's not the only person who can't seem to communicate. Eric and Sean (for different reasons) are both amazingly tight-lipped. Sean never manages to say anything useful until cornered, and even then he only says enough to end the questioning instead of making sure Ruby really knows what's going on. Eric only says enough to move Ruby where he wants, and she keeps trusting him despite how odd his behavior is. In other words, nobody is talking to anyone else. Needless to say, that causes all manner of messes.

I read this in two sittings, but would have liked to have finished it in one. The depth of the storylines and characters weaves a rich tapestry that goes beyond the usual stories one might imagine would be told. Dancing is a literal and figurative term in the book that makes for a secondary event throughout. I'm glad the next book in the series is already written!

Dispatches from Dystopia: Histories of Places Not Yet Forgotten

Review

“Melancholic but always fascinating Brown's journeys to some of the world’s furthest and most fragile destinations help us explore the meaning of place and memory and, along the way, subtly re-invent the art of the exploration. Dispatches from Dystopia is a compelling and important book.” (Alastair Bonnett, author of Unruly Places: Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies)“Brown is among our most visionary historians: a scholar, writer, and traveler who forces us to think of awfulness as a kind of opportunity and emptiness as another kind of thriving. Dispatches from Dystopia should be read by anyone interested in the fate of modernity in places that were once thought to be at its forefront. But it is also a set of essays on the art and science of sense-making: when to go to the archives and when to ignore them, how to hear and smell a place, and why our stories about someone else's past end up being some version of our own.” (Charles King, author of Odessa: Genius and Death in a City of Dreams)“Well written, raw, compelling, and seldom boring.” (Library Journal)“Brown's book masterfully straddles the line between personal travelogue and academic research. Her essays jump from a war-torn region of Central Asia to a forgotten hotel basement in Seattle, and Brown argues that history is much better served by historians who put themselves in the places they research and the essays they write.” (Shelf Awareness)“Brown is a historian, but she is also a traveler.  . . . For Brown, it is not enough simply to research a place, to reproduce published photographs. The importance of the body, of the physical presence of the writer, runs throughout Dispatches from Dystopia. Reacting against a kind of history too narrowly focused on printed records, on archives and official histories, Brown argues that historians must also seek out what cannot be transcribed and collated by scribes. To see, one must go: ‘The premise of this book,’ she writes, ‘is that traveling can be a form of negotiation, an unraveling of certainties and convictions and a reassembling of the past.’” (Los Angeles Review of Books)“Historians spend lots of time in archives and libraries. But documents often reveal little about people who lived on the margins of society or whose stories are intentionally obscured. To uncover these people’s stories, historian and self-described ‘professional disaster tourist’ ‘ Brown ventures into a variety of wastelands. Dispatches from Dystopia compellingly chronicles people who were or are living on the edge.” (Science News)“Dispatches from Dystopia is a remarkable work on fascinating places, and combines the best of historical analysis and travel writing. Despite its melancholic tone, it is a visionary work that deserves a wide audience.” (Times Higher Education)“The aesthetic pleasure of ‘ruin porn’—documenting places that have been abandoned and decayed by the quirks of cultural or economic transitions—is deeply connected to historian Kate Brown’s Dispatches from Dystopia: Histories of Places Not Yet Forgotten. Rather than holing up in the library for the close inspection of primary source documents, she ventures out to places like Uman, in the Ukraine, and Billings, Montana, where dystopian stories resonate in the land and the people who occupy it. . . . Each of Brown’s essays is engaging, and together they create a larger story about the ways that places tell stories that often remain untold.” (PopMatters)

This book, published at University of Chicago, (2015), in what to me is a series of three works with largely the same set of concerns that are wonderfully explored by Kate Brown. The other two, preceding, this one are "Plutopia," Oxford, (2013), and "A Biography of No Place," Harvard,(2003). Each of her books addresses her concerns in magically different and engaging ways. Readers will immediately notice that the narratives alternate between standard third person and, the most important one, first person. The writer is involved in the events themselves and not just as an observer or a scribe. Kate Brown's humanity is there on every page making it clear that her concerns are those also of her readers and, obviously, those she in engaged with everyday in her travels and research. The central topic, though is what a wasteland we have made of vast stretches of the world because of our obsessions with nuclear weapons and nuclear power. Her concern is not just Chernobyl, Fukushima, Three-Mile Island, but mainly two plutonium factories and what they have done to the political structures of our lives and, centrally, the devastation to our habitats and ourselves. The silence of radioactive isotopes have made it possible for us to remain unconscious of the effects all of the waste products have had on our health, the huge number of deaths that are not grouped in the obituary columns of local newspapers, but appear in families over many generations, and since these products do not just disappear, we, our children, our neighbors all, for many generations suffer and die from radiation poisoning. Our animals, pets and livestock are poisoned. All growing things are poisoned, and since radiation cannot be seen, its effects are difficult to trace to the damage they cause in our bodies and in all living things. Governments organized to produce nuclear weapons and then nuclear power urging its continuing production saying, often, that it is non-polluting, does not cause climate warming, and is both more effective and less costly than burning coal or making wind farms or other sustainable power alternatives. But? Nothing is free. The costs, though silent and long lived, are easily ignored until they pile up and no one wants the refuse in their back yards. People living by the production facilities deny the dangers because of the thousands of jobs created by the industry. All of this, in marvelously knitted and dramatic narrative gets revealed at just the right places in these three works. I have now been through all three of them and cannot wait until we get to see the revelations from her current sabbatical leave. I have not been soenthusiastic for an historians work since I was, long ago, an undergraduate learning about the Trans-Mississippi West by a teacher who was as involved in the lives and communities of Native Americans and their histories. Kate Brown has entered my pantheon of writers and teachers along with Dr. William E. Unrau. You may find his work here, too.

Rigorous and disciplined, this is an essential book with necessary lessons and perspectives not just for historians but anthropologists, doctors, even lawyers, and anyone serious about people and the world. In each essay, Brown places her person at some boundary--not just geographical (though that's always present and apparent), but at the limit of some structured, inadequate, strained understanding, whether it be a political outline of ethnicity, a scientific diagnosis of a disease, a historical depiction of an event--and Janus-like looks both into the accepted wisdom and out into the shadowy mixed realm of potential truths. Always illuminating, always engaging, always just a little too short, always honoring the places and especially the people she writes about, these essays exemplify scholarly intellect and the role academic inquiry plays in the world..

Dr. Brown forces us to confront the idea of a modernist wasteland from every angle. What it means for us, where we think it may refer to, and, most importantly, if we've been living in one all along. The juxtaposition of Soviet and post-Soviet settings with American counterparts is moving. More importantly, her prose and style make accessible an otherwise difficult matter. Highly recommended.

I love Kate Brown. This book isn't as long as Plutopia, it's not as overwhelming.

The "spatial turn" made both scholarly and personal - done by a historian with a thorough handle on the historiography (to which she is importantly contributing btw) and a truly deft pen.

Abraham believes that anyone can advance in life by tapping into hidden assets and developing the right mindset. He writes, "You are surrounded by simple, obvious solutions that can dramatically increase your income, power, influence and success. The problem is, you just don't see them." Over the course of 21 chapters, he shows how to get ahead by treating bosses and clients as valued friends; find better and more exciting ways of doing things; develop "unique selling propositions"; persuade people to follow your lead; master the art of selling on the telephone; craft a formal referral system; sell on the Internet; and forge strong, established business relationships. Abraham's central theme is that everyone is in sales. In almost any profession, people must be skilled at selling themselves and their ideas, not just their company's product or service. Engagingly written, the book features more than 200 examples of people and companies who have successfully used these techniques, from Bill Gates and Dennis Rodman to Sharper Image and Federal Express. --Dan Ring

It is packed with logical and pragmatic approaches. It is all about taking care of business and not being a timid, nice peddler hoping to get some sales tossed in your direction. I loved it's wisdom and maturity in the stories. One of the five best I have heard or read in 30 years of consistent development. (Influence by Cialdini, How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, 100 Five Minute Lessons in Selling by Rodney Young (used for $1), Getting Naked by Pat Lencioni) I know no one asked, but you might have been wondering.

Jay Abraham is the most creative business genius I have ever heard. He is so wise and has so much knowledge that I can find value to add to my life and business on nearly every single page. The ideas and tactics you will take away from this book is worth millions if you apply it. Timeless strategies and ideologies for any business. This is the book that I gift to anyone in my life whom I care for and want to see thrive in life and in business.

Most books I read on business are more theorhetical, but this book is epic in that it gives you things to do right away. I LOVED IT.Get it, you won't be disappointed. This was my first interaction with the book and I"ve only ever heard people talk about how Jay is a legend, and once you read his book, you get why.

I have finished reading the book from cover to cover, and implemented some of the suggestions, such as writing to potential customers that they can get massive discounts when lots of orders are placed at one. So far, the results have been disappointing with ZERO new customers. Also, Jay Abraham stressed how using his techniques, almost no customers will dislike you. But the thing is, there are always some customers that are very slow paying, and won't pay even after multiple requests to pay. Eventually, you have to resort to threat of legal action, and then they will respond, but usually not in a very positive manner. So at the end, with slow paying customers or customers who simply don't want to pay, the relationship with them will still end badly. The book makes you feel that everything will be so great, so fine and dandy, but it neglected to mention the hardship that every business must face when a client, especially a significant one pay you slowly or don't pay at all. I've known some businesses that went bust because a big client failed to pay, or went bankrupt.

Abraham explains several business strategies and how you can apply them to your business or career to increase your wealth. It is more of a high level book that is best for managers and business owners. I think it would be really helpful for getting someone to think outside the box and generate new ideas for revenue generation.

He is an exceptional teacher that not only explains deep concepts with simplicity, but also reinforces them with lots of real world examples. His strategy of Preeminence makes a lot of sense and should change your life.

Like Dan Kennedy's No B.S. Direct Marketing: The Ultimate, No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Direct Marketing for Non-direct Marketing Businesses (No B.S.), this book by Jay Abraham is a primer containing practical steps to take your business where you want to go with it. Implementing just one of the steps will more than pay for your investment in the book. If you like what you read, then I highly recommend picking up a copy of Money-making Secrets of Marketing Genius Jay Abraham and Other Marketing Wizards (A No-Nonsense Guide to Great Wealth and a Personal Fortune) a.k.a. the Mr. X Book. If you only want to get one Abraham book, pick the Mr. X Book over this one. However, both are good. The Mr. X Book is simply better because it contains so much more information that you can use in your business.

This has got to be one of the best books on marketing that I've read in a long while. You find yourself sitting back and re-examining your entire business process and easily coming up with ways to attract NEW business from your existing customer or client base.I easily came up with three full pages of new services to offer my existing clients. Jay is big on creating a Unique Selling Point. The lightbulb went off in my head as soon as I read about his. Putting these ideas into action can be done by anyone. These services were just sitting here waiting to be discovered -- and I never would have found them without Jay's book. No matter what your business, you will be able to use the ideas in Jay's book. They are broad enough that you can capture the concept and mold it to the way that you do business.Jay also has a set of tapes on this concept which I strongly recommend. His web site (abraham) has a good preview of his methodology and concepts as well.

The Uskoks of Senj: Piracy, Banditry, and Holy War in the Sixteenth-Century Adriatic, by Catherine Wendy Bracewell

Review

"The Uskoks of Senj is a study of piracy, privateering, and banditry in an area stretching from the Adriatic Bay of Kotor to Istria, and along the military frontiers of three empires―Habsburg, Ottoman, and Venetian. Complemented by a splendid choice of published sources, the book is an exemplary contribution to the history of the sixteenth-century Adriatic and Balkans." (American Historical Review)"Bracewell delves into the cultural and political attributes that transformed the coastal town of Senj into a crusading fortress. She also strives to ascertain exactly who undertook the hazardous and often ineffectual labor of combating the Ottoman 'Turk,' and why they did so. Bracewell argues that frontier culture shaped the Uskoks and their ethos. It forced them to be obstinate and shockingly pitiless." (Journal of Modern History)"Bracewell explains with care why the uskoks were able to provide a vehicle for the expression of a political and social identity for the people of the border. This book not only brings the uskoks into the light but also is a pathbreaking study of the nature of group identity and popular political consciousness in the sixteenth century." (Sixteenth Century Journal)

Bracewell's book chronicles the rise and fall of the Uskoks and their (largely unrecognized) role in the shaping of modern Europe. The book is enlightening in its depiction of the Uskok "pirates" of the Adriatic ( from Senj in Croatia) as the last bastion between Islam and Christianity. The Ottoman Empire extended to the South of of the Uskok enclave of Senj. This frontier (in modern Croatia) is where the Ottomans, the Austro-Hungarians and the Venetians converged, all with their own agendas. The result is a engrossing history lesson in in war, peace, diplomacy, religion, negotiation, political deals and merchant trade. Bracewell's book analyses the customs and culture of the Uskoks as well as their battle against not only the Ottoman Empire, but also Venice and eventually (their ally) Austria. A stimulating, well annotated, but not light read.

i liked this book a lot i am only 14 years old but i found it very goodRo

I loved the trilogy written by Pan Phillips partner, Rich Hobson, which began with 'Grass Beyond the Mountains.' That book tells the story of the partnership between Diana's father, Pan and Rich Hobson. Pan was the visionary who talked Rich into starting a cattle operation in the hinterlands of British Columbia beginning in the early 1930s. Hobson's second and third books are focused mostly on his story because the partnership split operations between two ranches, and then later dissolved with the partners going separate ways. Hobson's readers are left with only pieces of the Pan Phillips story so it was great anticipation that I ordered Diana's book, and I was not disappointed. She's every bit as good a storyteller in relating the Phillips part of the saga as Hobson was in telling his. It is unbelievable what hardships this group of pioneers endured making a life on the far edges of what we think of as civilization. Diana gives you a perspective from the feminine side too, where the women worked equally as hard as their men and very often harder. My own long years of raising cattle and horses here in the US with modern amenities like electricity and running water make me appreciate her story even more. I hope she writes a sequel / continuation of the saga that tells her story after leaving the Home Ranch.

Interesting and well written account of the courageous and tough men and women that opened up this far northern wilderness.

I wanted to read Diana phillips books after reading The Grass On The Other Side of the Mountain and the sequels by Richmond P. Hobson who deditcated his first book to the horses that helped him succeed his dream. I was interested in what happened with the ranchers who settled there. Very discouraged by Diana Phillips disregard and poor treatment of her animals especially as described in Beyond The Home Ranch; mostly about drinking and riding around on ATV's.Not well written nor does it end well.Would still like to know if Gloria Hobson reamained at Rimrock Ranch.

Follows right along with the Hobdon books. She fills in more of the details.

Enjoyed this as much as the books by Rich Hobson. Good continuation, explaining of the lifetimes!

Diana's memoirs are interesting after having read Rich Hobson's books preceding this one.

My husband and I met at Pan Phillips' Home Ranch in the middle of the winter in 1965. What a one of a kind character Pan Phillips was! His wife Betty was a very hard working woman who put up with a lot. This was not an easy place to reach. Airplane or horseback only. Diana does an awesome job telling about her Dad and the ranch life.

I read all rich hob sons first then read her book so I knew one side of the story first. Her book was well worth it. What extremely tough country and extre tough people to live there

One of the best biographies of Washington in a compact one-volume book. Chernow is a fine author, with an extensive vocabulary and an informed background on his subject, including what previous biographers have said. He does have an irritating habit of using "one" as a subject, such as "One wonders what Washington would have thought had he known." The "one," of course, is Chernow himself, but he wants to avoid the self-conscious "I wonder." Instead, he could have said something like, "It is interesting to speculate what Washington would have thought," or something similar. Otherwise, I found it a fascinating read, very authoritative even though the occasional slip back and forward in the timeline caused me to check dates to make sure I understood. He might be discussing something in 1789, for instance, and then mention something that happened in 1787 and then go back to 1789. This is handled pretty well, and is unavoidable in some cases, and if you check, you can see that he is conscientious about it, but it does require the reader to pay attention, not a bad thing, but something many forget to take some responsibility for.

This book is long with a small script, you have to concentrate and once you focus, the story sucks you in like water down a drain. Washington's mother was selfish, he forged his way in life in spite of her. He was a land surveyor as a teenager and amassed 1200 acres by the time he was 18. He surveyed the area in Virginia where the natural bridge is, and his initials are carved in the stone. Ron Chernow did an outstanding job researching this fine book and has a nice writing style. George Washington's friends and foes alike felt there was divine intervention as to how he stayed alive in battle. This man had a spine and showed remarkable courage under literal enemy fire. He was a visionary understanding his place in history and lived by both rectitude and probity. He turned down the title of king when debate occurred as what to call the ruler of the country. Fascinating vignette was his view of slavery which he disliked. He felt it was a losing proposition one third of the slaves being too old or two young to work, one third spending their time trying to do as little work as possible and only one third actually worked. He tested his slaves kindly and even provided for his favorite slave, Billy, in his will. A wonderful book that makes nearly every other president look like hollow shells in comparison.

It feels inappropriate to give a work of such magnitude and research 2 stars. “Washington” is chalked full of accolades and five star reviews. Chernow is academic to the highest degree. His knowledge is expansive and his writing is paired with an incredible vocabulary which is exceedingly fluid and enjoyable to read. The primary problem I had with this work was that Chernow more often assumes the role of a psychologist then that of a historian. While it is expected that some "analysis of the psyche" be done by a biographer, Chernow puts too great an effort to get inside the head of Washington. Page after page is spent trying to discern Washington’s ambitions, his love life, his temper, his feelings, his emotions—the real Washington. Ironically this seems to only further obscure this figure to me.Too often Chernow assumes what should be left to the reader to conclude. Sentences begin with statements as: “Surely this is due to Washington’s inner…”or “Washington’s insecurities were no doubt influenced by…” This is not history; it is the narrator’s voice getting to loud. I would rather Chernow had simplified his biography by stating the facts as they happened. Upon painting the picture, he could have presented--with far less dogmatism--various opinions (including his own) as to the inner mysteries of Washington.Chernow did his homework on this book and much of his recounting is enlightening. He is a talented author and a great historian, and I learned a lot throughout this biography. It is a shame he spent so much of it speculating who Washington REALLY was, instead of simply stating who Washington was—and leaving the finer mysteries for the reader to decide.
