Saviors and Survivors: Darfur, Politics, and the War on Terror, by Mahmood Mamdani

Review

“Mahmood Mamdani . . . is one of the most penetrating analysts of African affairs. In Saviors and Survivors: Darfur, Politics, and the War on Terror, he has written a learned book that reintroduces history into the discussion of the Darfur crisis and questions the logic and even the good faith of those who seek to place it at the pinnacle of Africa’s recent troubles . . . [An] important book . . .”—Howard W. French, The New York Times “Say ‘Darfur’ and horrific images leap to mind: Janjaweed, rape, genocide. But most of us would be hard-pressed to explain the violence there, beyond the popular notion that it’s ethnic cleansing of Africans by Arabs. Columbia University scholar Mahmood Mamdani’s brilliant new book, Saviors and Survivors, explains why this assumption is faulty, and why it’s foiling peace efforts.”—Katie Baker, Newsweek “Mahmood Mamdani . . . demonstrates just how politically charged the word ‘genocide’ has become, and how many shady agendas it can serve, even among those purporting to act in the name of universal values . . . His extensively documented study of the political and media circus that came to surround the hitherto uncelebrated province of Darfur is a vivid demonstration of the predictably calamitous results of outsiders meddling in places whose history, politics, and culture they can hardly be bothered to read up on.”—Benjamin Moser, Harper’s Magazine “Very few books on the Darfur crisis have provided such a good analysis of what is happening in the region and very few voices have attempted to understand the crisis in its local, regional, and international context. Very few books have attempted to discuss the crisis in its historical and geopolitical context. In reality discovering such an insightful book is like finding a needle in the sea.”—Al-Quds al-Arabi (London) “Whatever one thinks about Saviors and Survivors, the study and practice of contemporary Sudanese politics, humanitarian concerns, peace-making and peace keeping has received a jolt to the present paradigms that may get us all thinking at a new level of depth. Let’s hope that it will be lessons learned, and not repeated and congratulations to Dr. Mamdani for the clarity and courage to challenge conventional ‘wisdom’.”—Richard Lobban, Bulletin of the Sudan Studies Association of the USA. “There are three reasons why this book’s perspective on the Sudan-Darfur conflict may be of considerable value to readers interested in African politics and international relations. First, Saviors and Survivors is unique in that it presents an African-centered perspective on the Sudan-Darfur crisis in the context of the study of international relations, geopolitics and the War on Terror. Second, it draws attention to African regional, epistemological and ideological perspectives on the crisis. Third, it tackles the bogeyman of African politics—the national-ethnic question in the context of cultural pluralism . . . Hidden in the middle of Saviors and Survivors’ controversial thesis critiquing international interventionism is Mamdani’s scholarly genius. The book scrutinizes, critically analyzes, deconstructs and reconstructs the deep historical transformations that constitute the underbelly of the continent’s post-colonial citizenship structures.”—African Affairs (London) “Mamdani’s book is by far the most exhaustive study of the conflict and is carried out with an impressive display of investigative prowess and referencing . . . This study is reassuring in its learned dependence on a great variety of sources and an admirable depth of research. Indeed, the reader will discover that Darfur is not quite the mysterious and unknown place that we have tended to imagine . . . It is to be hoped that this book is widely read and debated.”—John C. Caldwell, Population and Development Review “[A] sweeping history of Darfur . . . Mamdani argues that calling the events in Darfur genocide is inaccurate and irresponsible . . . He believes that the West’s concern with Darfur is a preferred distraction from the failed U.S. occupation in Iraq, offering Western citizens a means to reclaim the moral high ground . . . [P]rovide[s] valuable historical and cultural background to recent events in Darfur and the sure-to-continue scholarly debate on genocide.”—Veronica Arellano, Library Journal “Mamdani traces the path to the Darfur tragedy through its historical and colonial roots to the current situation, where drought and desertification have led to conflict over land among local tribes, rebellion, and finally to the brutal involvement of the forces of the state and to the efforts of the United Nations and others to help the victims and stop the violence. His radical reevaluation of the Darfur problem is a major contribution to understanding and, it is to be hoped, to ending a shocking human disaster.”—Sir Brian Urquhart, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations “A brilliantly argued and profoundly challenging critique of liberal support for humanitarian intervention in Darfur. Beyond this, Mamdani sets forth an alternative approach to such catastrophic situations. This book should be required reading for the Obama foreign policy team.”—Richard Falk, United Nations Special Rapporteur and Professor Emeritus, Princeton University “An incisive and challenging analysis. Framing both Darfur’s war and the ‘Save Darfur’ movement within the paradigm of the West’s historic colonial encounter with Africa, Mahmood Mamdani challenges the reader to reconsider whether Darfur’s crisis is ‘genocide’ warranting foreign military intervention.”—Alex de Waal, Fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and author of War in Darfur “Mahmood Mamdani has turned his fearless independence of mind on Darfur, Sudan, and the so-called ‘War on Terror,’ producing a book that is as passionate and well-informed as it is intelligent and (for those used only to surface orthodoxies) challenging.”—Conor Gearty, Director of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights at the London School of Economics “A necessary contribution to the literature surrounding both humanitarian aid and African geopolitics.”—Kirkus Reviews

I'm about half way through this book, and it's nice to be reading a different argument on Darfur. I'm actually living and working in Southern Sudan, and I've found the world is a little naive when it comes to Darfur and genocide. This is a violent country, has been for centuries; Darfur is just one blip on that map. It's nice to see someone writing about that. However, I think the author is going a little overboard trying to tie Darfur and the ICC indictment so closely to the War on Terror. I also think it's a little insensitive of him to have the attitude that because this isn't genocide (in his opinion), the Save Darfur movement is not important. Regardless of whether Darfur is genocide, there are still millions dead and even more displaced, starving, in need of medical services, etc. and Darfur IS a crisis. His writing however is blunt, short and to the point, and offers a very candid view of an over-politicized situation. It's worth the read, even if you don't agree with what he says.

This book follows Prof. Mamdani's landmark article "The Politics of Naming: Genocide, Civil War, Insurgency" which appeared in the london review of books of March 2007. The author is an expert on african post colonial political history and international relations. The media and political elites of all sides of the political spectrum in the west have focused keenly on Darfur and continues to present an oversimplified narrative that seems to characterize its complex dynamics within rather narrow parameters defined by such diverse realities or perceptions such as the west's guilt over Rwanada, 19th century slavery in america, 20th century race relations in the US, cosmic battles between good and evil and missionary zeal, genuine concern for human rights, excuse to engage in exploiting sudanese resources etc. The reaction in america to Darfur has spurned the strangest bedfellows. The congressional black caucus and the republican party see eye to eye on Darfur. Despite the very real suffering of people in Darfur, the concerns expressed in the west which range from genuine to thinly veiled hypocracy and many are truly left without the proper context to the dynamics of the conflict and the accuracy and geopolitical implications of naming such a conflict as genocide. This book fills that urgent need and provides the historic and contemporary geopolitical perspective on the conflict and analyzes the international reaction to the Darfur crisis. Again kudos to Prof. Mamdani for this eye opener. This book should be a must read for anyone seriously needing to understand not only the conflict in Darfur, but also the politics of humanitarian intervention, post colonial african politics, consequences of climate change etc.

the book was used and marked.

While studying Darfur in my master's thesis, I was tired of reading biased books and essays. Mr.Mamdani's book made me relief. I have grasped the matter better and I absolutely recommend you to read it if you want a clear mind about what has happened in Darfur.

I began reading the introduction to this book and thought it would be very informative. Up to chapter 3 it had been. Chapter 3 is titled 'Writing Race into History.' The author invokes the 'Ham' myth to explain how so called Negroes became black. It is unbelievable that anyone writing in the 21st century could site this. At first I took it as some type of straw man that the author would use to prove a later point. Yet the author continues to use terms like 'Negroid'. What the heck is 'Negroid'? Terms like Negro and Negroid were invented by colonists. There were no Negroes or Negroids before colonialism. After establishing the 'fact' of Negroids, the author attempts to show that these Negroids and Arabs are somehow the same people. In speaking about Ancient Egypt the author states that the Ancient Egyptians divided their world into four parts: the west was Libyans, the east was Asians, to the south was the land of the blacks and then the Ancient Egyptians themselves. Really? So the Ancient Egyptian had no concept of north? And it is only the blacks who are known by their skin color and not by the land they inhabit. Which raises another point: The assumption is that everyone is white and that we must somehow explain where black people came from. The Ancient Egyptians called themselves Kemites which means land of the blacks. The author gives no references for what he is saying. His whole point seems to be to prove that somehow Arabs are indigenous to Africa including Egypt which is obviously false. That is why they are Arabs! To make this work he must steal the identity of the people who are indigenous to the area in question. Ironically, this is the exact thing Palestinians are accusing Israelis of doing.I have not completed this book and maybe I will be enlightened further down the road. However, if the authors point is that the conflict is Darfur is not race based but is political, or economic he is doing a poor job of doing so by using colonial language. In fact, unless the author changes course in the remainder of the book, I will use the book myself to prove the opposite of what his intentions are. Obviously the author has been living in some sort protective bubble of scholarship where he is not aware of the debates which have taken black with Martin Bernal, "Black Athena", and the entire Afrocentric school.

This book tells the story of the hyperinflation in Weimar Germany and its aftermath (1919-1926) and, to some extent, the ensuing rise of Hitler's Nazi Germany. It is a story which is so complex and convoluted that it takes a historian to even begin to do it justice. Fortunately, this book's author is not only an accomplished historian, well versed in his subject, but also a gifted writer. The result is a remarkable book about an almost indescribable and incomprehensible period in the world's history. So, if you've ever wondered about the hyperinflation in Germany following the Great War (WWI), and by extension what the REAL consequences of inflation, hyperinflation, deflation and depression might be, this is the book you've been looking for. In fact, I've only read one other book which even comes close; that being `The Fiat Money Inflation in France: How It Came, What it Brought, and How It Ended' by Andrew Dickson White. But this book is much more timely, much broader in scope, much more comprehensive, and much easier to relate to our more modern times. In it, you'll learn a lot and find the answers to many puzzling questions. Among them: what caused the inflation, what were its impacts, and why it was allowed to continue; which groups and social classes fared the best, which the worst, and why; how the inflation resulted in the redistribution of wealth; what happened to landlords, shop owners, government employees, members of unions, free workers, and pensioners, as well as the middle-class; what the man or woman on the street had to do simply to survive; who prospered, who lost everything, and why; what the government did and didn't do and what the impacts were on people at all social levels, and on industry; how the hyperinflation was finally ended, why the resulting deflation and depression was worse in many ways, and why; and what those living through the deflation/depression period had then to do in order to survive and, in some cases, prosper. There is also much anecdotal evidence as to just how much misery both inflation and deflation can cause. For example: the well dressed elderly man who couldn't afford two cents (American money) for a bag of apples; the little old lady who supported herself by selling her crucifix chain one tiny gold link at a tme; the foreign students who bought rows of houses out of their allowance; the substitution of paste-board coffins for wooden ones; the life insurance policies that eventually were worth less than their annual premiums; the banks that did away with smaller savings accounts because the paper required to book them was worth more that the money in the accounts; the man who said it was better to have a prostitute in the house than the corpse of a dead baby; the beggars who, in October 1923, purportedly wouldn't accept anything smaller than a one million mark note; and finally, that even with the first "billiard" [a thousand million million] and five billiard notes being printed in November 1923, people still clamored for more.Apart from the Weimar Republic: This book is essentially a case study in inflation and its aftermath which should be of interest to anyone contemplating or concerned about the current state of America's, and the world's economic future, and the direction America is headed. In reading it, it is well to keep in mind what Gunter Schmolders articulates (pg. 248), "With inflation alone can a government extinguish debt without repayment, or wage war and engage in other non-productive activities on a large scale: it is still not recognized as a tax by the tax-payer."In any event, if you do read this book, and if you are anything like me: You'll likely conclude, as I did, that everyone talks about inflation, but no one, especially the politicians who cause it, really knows what they are dealing with or what the consequences may be.

I am from Venezuela, a country that is suffering all manners of disruption including hyperinflation. Mr. Fergusson’s Highly readable book explains how it was in post World War I Germany, including the policy that produced Germany’s hyperinflation and how that hyperinflation went on to destroy most Germán govt and economic institutionsS, clearing the way for Hitler’s ascendancy.Despite the many differences between Germany in the 1920s and Venezuela today, the book helps to understand the hows and whys of today’s disasters in Venezuela

This book’s strength is the details of how hyperinflation impacted everyday life for citizens of post-WWI Germany. It’s weakness is that it doesn’t offer much background and context - the reader is expected to already have considerable knowledge about the Weimar Republic, how it came to be, what was going on politically in it and around it, and where it was headed. This is not an introductory text. The frequent mentions of how far the mark had fallen against the dollar and the pound at various points in time are important for the historical record, but feel repetitive as a reader. The author spends about every third page throwing out lists of numbers that eventually become so large as to be meaningless.

I got this book in October 2010 based on a recommendation from either BullionVault.com or another website devoted to providing a dissenting view to mainstream economics. It was first published in 1975, just four years after the Nixon administration had severed the last tie between gold and the U.S. dollar by closing the international “gold window” and terminating the right of foreign governments to exchange dollars for gold. At that time the prospect of an American hyperinflation seemed far off, even as inflation was rising fast, and those scratchy old silent-film clips of forlorn Germans pushing wheelbarrowfuls of banknotes to the bakery to buy bread were quaint and unreal-looking.As I type these words the price of gold is US$1,818 per ounce, an increase of 4400% since 1971, and last week Switzerland, long a bastion of monetary probity, gave up on maintaining the value of its franc and pegged it instead to the moribund Euro, joining the other major currencies in a death-spiral of competitive devaluation. For those aware of what hyperinflation is, the possibility of experiencing it for ourselves is becoming ever more plausible and imminent. Adam Fergusson’s book gives a detailed picture of how hyperinflation—the death of a paper currency—played out in a modern industrial economy in the 1920s. It’s not a pretty sight.I never knew much about the Weimar hyperinflation, but assumed that it had something to do with the payment of war reparations imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. And while Fergusson’s topic is not really the cause of the hyperinflation, he does eventually come out and say that war reparations probably had nothing to do with it. Instead we see a fledgling republic facing severe social and economic problems, but whose leadership throughout remains stubbornly timid and ignorant. The leaders of both the government and its central bank, as well as newspaper editors and other leaders of opinion, were almost unanimous in asserting that the inflation had nothing to do with the runaway printing of banknotes, which they saw as an effect rather than as a cause of rocketing prices.Hyperinflation inflicts severe suffering on almost everyone except those able to profit by making bets on the collapse of the currency. The suffering, though, is very unequally distributed, and the injustice of the whole process is one of its most striking features. With a whole generation of children malnourished, women selling their bodies for a pork chop, and retired civil servants dropping dead on the street from hunger and cold, you also have farmers hoarding bumper crops, unwilling to sell for worthless paper money, and industrialists in a frenzy of factory-building to make use of cheap credit. Some of the best parts of the book are extracts from the journals and letters of housewives describing what they see around them. They witness mob violence and exchange their pianos for potatoes. In other ways though I found the book to be a dry read, and I felt that it was really addressed to people who were already students of this period of German history and had a grasp of the people and events of that time. The author assumes a knowledge of the time and place that in my case was lacking, which made the reading tougher going. I also found that his style lacked fluency, which made things harder as well. A sentence taken at random: “The uncertainties to which these postponements gave rise in large measure accounted for the wild fluctuations of the mark during the year.” Another writer would have put this is a more readable way.All of that said, this book was for me very readable because of its relevance to the events unfolding around me in the world. The enormous federal budget deficits in the United States are starting to look like the Weimar deficits, and although printing presses are no longer used to create money, dollars are being created by the trillion—a figure that became familiar in Germany in the early 1920s. When I go shopping I’m struck by how much less my money buys than even a year ago, and I fully expect that prices will only accelerate upward from here. But does that mean we’re headed for actual hyperinflation? According to writers like James Turk of GoldMoney.com and John Williams of ShadowStats.com, yes we are. Williams, a longtime statistician with the U.S. federal government, thinks it will be in the next year or two.But are our governments as timid or as deep in denial as the Weimar republic? I’ll leave that question with you. Another thing I’ll leave with you is a favorite quote from another writer, Henry Hazlitt, an American journalist on economics and finance. In 1946 he wrote these words: "Inflation discourages all prudence and thrift. It encourages squandering, gambling, reckless waste of all kinds. It often makes it more profitable to speculate than to produce. It tears apart the whole fabric of stable economic relationships. Its inexcusable injustices drive men toward desperate remedies. It plants the seeds of fascism and communism. It leads men to demand totalitarian controls. It ends invariably in bitter disillusion and collapse."If you’re looking for a refutation of Hazlitt’s points, you won’t find it in When Money Dies.

I couldn't put this book down once I started reading. It's great. It's awesome. It's thought-provoking. Buy it. Read it. Do I need to say more?OK. A short summary:The story follows two separate plot lines that converge near the end. The first follows Jack Greer and a team of scientists as they drill near the Yucatan Peninsula to try to reach the remnants of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.. As they reach 1500 feet, they drill into--something--and an incredible white light is seen throughout the world. After receiving assistance from the US Navy, they go down and find a huge spaceship, shaped like a diamond. Needless to say, they are blown away. They get in the ship and try to find its purpose? Did the ship kill the dinosaurs? Did it arrive afterwards to help life get started again? If so, how and why did they do that? Finally, where did the aliens go?At the same time, Mia Ward, a doctor of genetics is trying to solve a genetic mystery. It seems that the burst of light is making some people sick by somehow altering their DNA. Her scientific world is at a loss to explain this and she spends the book trying to solve the mystery. There are some people that don't want anyone to find out about the ship, so Mia flies around the world to consult various experts, and is constantly being followed by people trying to stop her (kill her).Jack and Mia finally meet up once Mia finds the data she needs. Once they exchange information, we learn about a possible alternative to our common belief of how life evolved on earth. There is a lot of science and genetics that you may have to read twice, but it is well worth it. I love reading about alternatives to common beliefs because...what if? What if makes things more interesting. The book ends with a cliffhanger that comes out of left field and leaves you with a sense of, "Oh no. What have we gotten ourselves into?" Luckily, the sequel is already out!Highly recommended.

This novel was a heavy mix of good and bad. It was certainly entertaining and made for compulsive reading. The story was full of information regarding genetics with a few assumptions on historical events and periods and, most importantly, it was a thrilling ride. However, the plot had tremendous holes everywhere. For instance, a character is trapped in a room with her bodyguard holding off intruders outside the door. The next chapter, she is in another country without explaining how the entire team had extricated themselves from the dilemma. At another point, a man is killed in a holy place with the team members the only witnesses as to what had happened. The next we see of these people, they are in another country without it being explained how they were able to avoid being held by law enforcement. I admit that these explanations would have slowed down the plotting, but they are necessary. It is as if the author came to a full stop before the hurdle, then just walked around it. I will be reading the next volume, due out this month, simply because the storyline was pretty riveting.

Very thought provoking, entirely plausible with a great story populated with interesting and complex characters. I really hope we see more of Anna in the future. Extinction Code is a page turner that will keep you thinking about the questions raised long after you have finished reading it. A big thumbs up.

Don't start this if you have to go to work early the next day! I literally couldn't put this down & spent all weekend reading! I immediately got caught up with Jack, Mia and the other assorted characters. As they raced to find answers while coping with strange new technology/concepts. There were several twists thrown in that kept this from being just another predictable book. I enjoyed the "What if" factor since there are too many things we have yet to understand about DNA or disease. fortunately the book left room for a sequel ... I can't wait to find out what happens next!

I've been reading SF for 55 years starting with the masters of the golden age. So today I find it hard to find science based books as it seems like everything has vampires or wizards in it. I tried Prescott's book because of the plot reflecting some current science. This book has a good science underpinning and adds secret societies, alien guidance of human evolution; all the basic food groups. It's not Ringworld or Rendezvous with Rama but it was a good read and earned Prescott a second chance with book two now about 45% done as of today.

Extinction Code caught me from the very start and kept me enthralled throughout. I had to reread to get more fun, since I can’t wait for the second installment!I found myself pleasantly educated, happily carried away with plot excitement twists, and invested in the characters’ survival while I lived their experiences with them. Thank you and I’m excited more soon is arriving! Hooray!

reasonably imaginative but spoiled by the poor writing - full of stock characters who are barely one dimensional. I wont be buying beyond the first book.

Having read and enjoyed Genesis Conspiracy, I had very high hopes for Extinction Code, but I wasn’t expecting to be totally blown away by it. This is an action packed technothriller with a well-researched premise and masterfully told by a writer who clearly gets better with each book he publishes. The story hooks the reader from the very first page and a wonderful cast of characters take us with them as they discover and explore a mystery that has remained hidden for millions of years. This story is written in the best traditions of Rollins, Riddle and Reilly – there’s not a dull moment throughout and it is very difficult to put down.I’m excited at the prospect of reading more from James D. Prescott and highly recommend Extinction Code to fans of the genre and thrillers in general. A great read!

I thought there might be a surprise hidden inside this basic romance novel. I'm not a fan of girl meets boy she wants to ignore but falls in love kinda stuff. Three stories all of which end up exactly where you figure they will after the first few chapters. I was disappointed in the mediocre story line, you see it coming, you just keep hoping there might be something you missed and that it will end up be more exciting than it actually ever is. Nice easy light reading but not exactly compelling or gripping.

Predictable and somewhat boring, this book does little to actually illuminate history and instead relies on well-worn tropes and romantic plot lines to attempt to move the story forward. So shallow is this novel that its plot could be plucked from its WWII setting and dropped into any other—WWI, Vietnam, Victorian, Edwardian, American Civil War, etc.—and very little would actually need to change. If you like soapy, one-dimensional, predictable romances, you might enjoy this book. Otherwise, it is not worth the money and an insult to the genre.

This was an awesome book......couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what happened with the characters.Well written and kept you wanting to find out the ending. WWII novels are so interesting to me.Thanks for an awesome book.

I liked the detail of what life must have been like around the 1940 time framein England and in the Cornwall region for young ladies. A great yarn in particularregarding the principle character Louise and her difficult journey though the Londonraids and survival of personal impacts delivered to her and overcoming these tolive her dream life in California.

The Light Over London by Julia KellyBrief Summary: Cara is looking for a new start and finds an old WWII diary in her work for an antique shop. Louise is feeling trapped in her Cornish village, expected to marry. After she falls for a dashing pilot who is soon deployed, she runs away to enlist and join the Gunner Girls. The Gunner Girls are tasked with shooting down German planes during the blitz of London.Highlights: I loved the diary aspect and the way that the past and the present story lines collide. I love the timeless theme of women breaking free for the lives of duty and obligation they were expected to live. I didn’t know about the Gunner Girls or about women serving in the line of fire. I thought the twist at the end of Louise’s story probably happened more then it’s used in WWII fiction stories.Explanation of Rating: 4/5: I was very wrapped up in finishing this book.Favorite Quotes: “It would be dangerous; but what they would do would matter.” “Do you ever worry that the more you dig into Iris’s past the more likely it is that you will find something you wish you didn’t know? Constantly; but I need to know.”One of the best endorsements that I can give a book is that I bought my own hard copy before I even finished my electronic ARC. I am recommending this read to all my historical fiction loving friends!Thank you to Net Galley and Gallery Books for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review

I always enjoy historical fiction and this book was no exception. The book takes place in two time frames; current London and World War II. In both story lines, the women are trying hard to find themselves despite one being pressured to stay home and fulfill her mother’s wishes for her future and the other recovering from a disastrous first marriage. The role of women in the ATS has been, like the part played by women at Bletchley Park, a well kept secret. The story of their training, their assignment, their friendships, romances and heart breaks is fascinating. The romance in modern times was predictable but fun. The romance during the war was tragic and doomed but made a good vehicle for showing how women were regarded at that time. Not great literature but an easy, enjoyable and educational read.

Nothing special. About a young innocent girl from a small town who leaves her home during WWII to join up and meets this charming handsome pilot....they fall in love..there is a twist to the story.....A woman who finds her diary is also living her own story. Many years after the war. She searches to find the woman whose diary she's found.... Janet B

Fun easy read, interesting story. I learned information about WWII which was new to me: women serving in the military fighting for England; Aiming Antiaircraft Guns. My wife liked the book, but warned me it was “chick lit”. I enjoyed it greatly even if it was written from the female point of view. I am looking forward to Ms. Kelly’s next book which I understand will be about another WWII woman’s story. (Full disclosure: I know Julia Kelly personally and can report that she is a lovely person.)

This book was a required textbook for my Operations Management and Information Systems course in an MBA program. The book reads well, the material is clearly explained and chapters are well-organized. In each chapter, the authors describe the use these techniques in real life cases in actual companies. There are a lot of problems and self-tests at the end of each chapter which help to learn the material in depth.

This was the textbook for my quantitative analysis class. Expensive, but by far, one of the best management science books I have read. I will be using this as a reference book for years.

DisappointedGot th book like this right after opening the box. I did write a lot more in my initial comment. However amazon censored it, and did not let me post it. So now I am just writing this subtle message. About how my book was just a bunch of assembled garbage.

VERY dense, technical textbook. One of the MOST difficult, if not the most difficult class I’ve ever taken

there is nothing wrong with the book but you dont need to buy this or rent it, you can find the pdf online for free.

It’s what I needed

It met the requirements for my class. Great product

Had to buy this for class. Such a bad read, no wonder it was 'cheaper' compared to other $200 text books.

This was a great investment! I love how I can teach writing to my first graders! Gretchen is a genius! Thanks for having it amazon!

I consult with educators and have for roughly 20 years but my interest in this book was pure curiosity. How could nursery rhymes help teach reading and writing? It sounded interesting in part because I adored nursery rhymes as a child. Now for the book - this is absolutely packed full of interactive examples and clear explanations - however, it quickly becomes a bit redundant as the formula is used over and over with 50 different nursery rhymes. While it is nice to see each individual rhyme in detail, it also becomes a bit boring. Additionally, I have some question as to how well younger children would be able to fully grasp some of the concepts given their limited vocabulary and spelling. Overall this is a fun addition with a few considerations that can be easily customized for use in your own class.

This is a helpful book for new teachers. While the technique is pretty much the same for all the rhymes, it helps create routine for the teacher and for the student. The teacher reads the poem out loud, then discuss it with the students. This is text structure. Students draw their version of what they hear, and new words are gone over in detail. Learning rhyming words helps young readers memorize new words and helps them associate them with familiar words. Each rhyme has two pages, with the second page being the writing exercise. There are many rhymes I had never heard of before. The rhymes cover many different events, such as family gatherings, loss, holiday giving, etc.

This guide presents a creative approach to writing and literary thinking for Preschoolers and Kindergarteners. It takes Nursery Rhymes, some of which I had not heard before, and makes them into fun brainstorming sessions and writing starts. Each Nursery Rhyme is accompanied by helpful examples of their own experiences with their use of these in their classrooms, which was really helpful as I prepared lessons! In some ways, the book could be seen as repetitive, because the same base model is used for each text. But, personally, I found the insights and examples of their classroom application of these texts to be very valuable.

This has been a helpful book, it is a good way to teach a young child writing by using something familiar to them. I have taken some parts and changed them to suit my needs but for the most part it is a good solid book.
