Great content and James Bartlett put a ton of work into this and it shows--- it's just missing page numbers. So you'll look something up in the table of contents, and try to go to page 75, and then you're like, "oh wait, I have to just flip around and find it."
UPDATED December 2017.I’m updating this review because, well, I realized over time that my issues with this book were very much a case of “it’s not you, it’s me†– meaning that the book did not originally align with my subjective expectations of what the book was intended to be. When I picked the book back up and reread it several months later, I realized what the book was actually meant to be – and what it wasn’t – and I developed a newfound admiration for it and enjoyment of it, which is why I am bumping up the book to five stars.I originally thought he book was intended to be primarily a book on “LA ghost stories and haunted places.†Looking at it through that lens, I found it a bit unfocused and filled with minor details not relevant to the “ghost storiesâ€. Leaving the book on my nightstand, however, I’ve found myself picking it up from time to time since then – and it dawned on me that the book was so much more than I originally realized.Rather than just a book on “ghost storiesâ€, (which are a dime a dozen), the book is really a quite enjoyable “insider’s tour of LA†aimed squarely at people like me who often walk past a building and think “I wonder what the history of that place is?†As such, the book generally follows a format where the author identifies a place, lays out in detail “interesting things that happened here†and then (usually) closes out with a fun exploration of places to dine or drink in the vicinity. As such, it’s almost like a cheeky (in a good way) friendly local tour guide – “here’s a building, here’s some interesting stories about it, including some creepy ones, and, while we’re here, let’s check out these cool places for a bite to eat or drink nearby.†So it’s a mix of history (the more juicy stuff) mixed with a knowledgeable local giving recommendations about his city. That structure – which really appeals to a person like me who both is interested in history (I was a history major in college) and loves to just walk around in a city when visiting – was completely lost on me when I first read the book. That was my fault, not the author’s.Once I reread the book on its own terms, I realized how much I enjoyed it and appreciated it. And, as noted in my original review, the amount of research that must have gone into this book is staggering – the hundreds of photocopied headlines throughout alone attest to the time spent in the LA news archives poring through old newspapers. I’ve only been to LA once but am returning this summer – and I will be packing this book to brush up on the points of interest in the various areas I will visit.___________________OLD REVIEWThough the book is interesting, I did not enjoy this book as much as I had hoped I would. I did not find this to be a book that I would sit down and read cover-to-cover in one sitting, but rather one of those books you keep handy to open when you have a few moments, find something of interest and enjoy for a chapter or two and then set aside until next time. I don’t mean to denigrate the book by using the term “bathroom reader†(as the book has much more depth than a book of that genre), but something akin to that experience of a book that can be digested in bite-sized chunks - “flip through to find something that captures your interest and read a bit.â€I have not read the first Gourmet Ghosts, but I suspect that, given that this book covers the same geographic area as the first book, the more well-known stories and locales may have been covered in the first book, leaving the second book to consist of the more-obscure items that perhaps didn’t make the cut the first time. (However, the sections in this book providing updates on matters covered in the first book are interesting and appreciated, and provide a tantalizing glimpse into what the first book may have covered.)The book is obviously the product of exhaustive research (a lot of time appears to have been spent in the archives of L.A. news outlets, as well as personal contacts between the author and various persons involved); however, sometimes “too much information is too muchâ€, meaning that the book sometimes seems to have a lot of filler, irrelevant or minor details that blunt the impact of – and detract attention from - the “important stuff’. The “minor†details are often given equal weight as the “big stuffâ€, making it sometimes unclear as to what makes a given locale “notable†in the author’s mind (and why he wants you to read about it.) (Example: in describing the history of a hotel in Hollywood, the author blunts the impact of a later “juicy†story by first taking care to note the hotel’s first recorded death – a guest who checked in with a preexisting medical ailment and expired during his stay, which likely happens daily in lodgings across the nation. I could not tell if the author’s intent with this was merely to be exhaustively comprehensive, or instead to “puff up†the hotel’s image as a death-spot by including mundane passings to elevate the hotel’s body-count.) I admit that there were times where I read certain facts and thought “so what? Why was this included?â€Notes to readers on expectations:Though the author does not claim that this is a dedicated “ghost†book per se – it is truthfully marketed as more a grab bag of interesting stories on a variety of locales in L.A., with references to reputed ghost activity, crimes as well as general local color – potential readers should not mistake the title “Gourmet Ghosts†and come in expecting paranormal investigations or chapters devoted to the ins-and-outs of a single matter. The book is arranged by geographic area and covers many locales within a single “chapterâ€, so don’t expect to go too in-depth on any one specific location or story (with certain exceptions). Or, where the author does display his immense research and eye for detailed facts (for example, in the pages on Crossroads of the World), you will find most of the story devoted to the (non-spooky) history of the place (which I personally really liked, but may disappoint those looking strictly for the “ghost story†associated with the locale.)Similarly, the book does not market itself as a dedicated “celebrity crime and scandal†book – in fact, most of the stories here revolve around people you likely have never heard of (again, true to the author’s research into L.A. news archives – most newsworthy events do not revolve around celebrities). The stories are nonetheless interesting and enlightening, but may disappoint those mistakenly expecting the book to revolve around “famous†cases. There are plenty of other books devoted to those cases; this book gives a deeper dive into stories you likely would not have heard about otherwise. I think this book actually makes a valuable addition to the effort to preserve L.A.’s history, by memorializing “lesser-known†stories that would otherwise be lost to time because they do not involve celebrities, and should be considered a useful resource for L.A. historians.I received a complimentary copy for review.[Review edited to correct a few typos in original.]
I read the first installment while living in LA and this second installment is just as great even though I no longer live there. I especially like that there are some previously unpublished photos. Also, the author clearly feels passionately about this and you can tell how much research went into it so I appreciate both of those things. As for the content, it is quite interesting. I learned things I didn't know and it's fascinating to see how things have changed. There were so many deaths by poison and jumping off the roof, and also elevator shafts! I recommend this book to anyone who likes ghost stories or murder mysteries, as well as people in the LA area who might like to visit the places talked about in the book.
I read this book in two days, with a cocktail in my hand as it was allllllll old Hollywood and what didn't they do without a cocktail? I started to read this as a "do I remember being there?" bit of curiosity based on my trips to LA, but instead, it turned into a reference guide for my next trip to LA because the stories were so fantastically intriguing and I probably didn't even know I was looking at some of these old hotels as they are newly owned and named. The history was great, the stories kept me reading on and I even have post-it's on my favorite pages as must see's. I always love a good intrigue or ghost story, I love a good bar or good food at restaurants and hotels and I love HollywoodLA in it's hey day, so this book was a perfect treat.
I found this book to be an easy, juicy read - perfect literary candy to zone out with after a long day. I love LA and was familiar with some of the stories - like the Lamb mortuary scandal - and some were new to me... which will keep me busy Googling for awhile!! I like that the book is laid out by district and addresses are provided, as it will make my next trip being a ghoulish tourist easier! I found it well researched and nicely written and will be purchasing the first volume!
Loved it!!! Read this book over and over, couldn't put it down. I am not a reader, but seriously couldn't put it down!!!. I had family members borrow the book and they too reread it numerous times. I recommend this to all that love the darker Side of Hollywood. The stories are so very interesting. A MUST read
Awful. Nary a ghost around. No descriptions of experiences. And nary a bit to eat either. Just misses terribly.
