So says Patrick McGovern, and this book explains how it got that way. McGovern theorizes that organisms great and small, perhaps from the unicellular to non-human primates to humans, are hard wired to crave the products of sugar fermentation, particularly alcohol. This taste for fermented beverages has been a driving force in the evolution of human biology, agriculture, culture and religion, or so it would seem. McGovern documents this evolution through archeological findings from Europe, Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East -- anywhere and everywhere wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages have been made for many thousands of years,from grain, fruit, honey and whatever other raw material mankind could coax into creating intoxicating food and drink. We are, as McGovern has entitled his very first chapter, "Homo Imbibens."As the book concludes, summing up the theme, "our species' intimate relationship with fermented beverages over millions of years has, in large measure, made us what we are today."Being neither an archeologist nor a paleontologist, I found some of the copious detail presented in this book to be tough sledding. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating read and worth the effort.

Simply an outstanding book of scholarship. McGovern is a scientist who speaks fluent vernacular, which for most of us is a blessing. This is a remarkably inclusive survey of worldwide alcoholic beverage production and consumption from the end of the last ice age through the age of the Greeks. Though much of the book deals with the beginnings and subsequent evolution of wine and beer, he touches on drinks, ceremonies and rituals involving fermentation of myriad fruits, honey and starch laden grains from South America to China to Africa. One can't help but be impressed by the widespread use of alcohol by almost every societal group on earth. The picture painted by the author is of an ancient world practically awash in mixed drinks (beer, wine, and honey mixed together being a common one) and a remarkable diversity of stand alone wine and beer styles, often infused with herbs and flavorings, many hallucinatory, to enable the priests and leaders of early societies to commune with their particular gods and goddesses. These drinks have not only been an integral part of human life for thousands of years but may well have been the impetus behind agricultural domestication, human migration and trade and the spread of dominant cultures.For any student of the human condition, of the development of ritual and religion, of the emergence of humanity from our earliest hominid ancestors - and certainly for any thoughtful devotee of wine or beer, I highly recommend Uncorking The Past.

Absolutely fascinating, enthralling read! I am finding it difficult to put this book down so that I can go to work....or do just about anything else. If you have any interest in fermentation and how it has affected humanity throughout history, you're going to want to read this. The author is known as "The Indiana Jones of Ancient Fermented Beverages", and now I understand why.

A good review, with interesting insights on the evolution of fermented beverages in early humanity. A lot of unexpected side observations on everything from the bible to the human psychology, as well.

Very entertaining, interesting and informative history of fermented beverages by beer lovers' favorite molecular archeologist, Dr. Patrick McGovern, who has worked with Dogfishhead in recipe recreations and was seen on Brewmasters. Great read if you are interested in archeology, brewing, fermentation in general, and the rise of civilization.

Even when they clearly love their subject matter, not all authors can achieve what McGovern manages with such apparent ease: to pull you right into the story, sharing a wealth of historical and scientific knowledge in a fun and painless way.

This is a really great, comprehensive discussion of ancient brewing in different time periods, geographic locales and cultural contexts. It's well-written and entertaining. Highly recommended.

While this was required reading for a required college course, and I have ZERO interest in the subject matter of this book, (sorry!) I really enjoyed reading it. My mind and world-view was greatly expanded. What could be dry material is entertaining and well written. I'm glad they "MADE" me read this. I have referred back even after that class was over.

The bible of one of the worst and slickest economic cults ever devised, globalism as designed by the oligarchs. A recipe for disrespecting the middle and lower classes and concentrating political, economic, educational and information power in the hands of a very few families who mean us no good. Exactly what the Founding Fathers warned us about and we missed our cue to act. Too late now. We let Grover Norquist drown our democracy in his bath tub. To cleans your mind, follow with Naomi Klein's, The Shock Doctrine, and Sam Pizzigati's, The Rich Don't Always Win. It will probably take a year to finish Shock Doctrine but is well worth the time.

This book addresses some of the difficulties of globalization the study of which is especially pertinent today when the world seems to be shifting to isolationism and populism. After reading it you you start to question if it was actually written at the end of the 1990s.It is impressive to see how clearly Thomas Friedman does what he also calls Information Arbitrage in pulling episodes and events from disparate parts of the world and in a wide variety of topics into one cohesive world view: globalization.The framework he proposes for globalization is the simplest and most useful I've ever read about and it sure made me understand much more of our world.A wonderful work of research, analysis and specially of writing went into this book.Funny thing: the book is super current even though it never mentions Google (because it was just a tiny company at the time).I'm already reading "The World is Flat" by the same author. The globalization of the world's economy is a phenomenon of the world after the demise of the Soviet Union. Friedman gives a brilliant tour de force of the causes and results of worldwide financial markets acting in accordance with their own perceived self-interest, bestowing wealth and new investment in countries based upon their potential to return a profit to investers. But he also describes what happens when the "Electronic Herd" of investors get spooked by unanticipated threats to their investments. Because countries differ widely in their ability to absorb and efficiently use investment capital, there are wide fluctuations in investment, with consequential social and economic damage as capital moves across national boundaries with the speed of a mouse click. Friedman uses an anecdotal approach it illustrate his points, and in the end, they coalesce into his principal themes, that predictability, transparency, and accountability are the standards against which all investment will be measured, and those who are unable or refuse to abide by these norms will suffer accordingly. He also analyzes the impact of these fluid financial markets on traditional societies, and the tensions that fluidity impose on the traditonal order of things. People want both the wealth that the new order brings, but also want the community and values that this financial fluidity tend to undermine. Striking a balance between hopes and dreams for a secure future, and protecting traditional community values, and providing a safety net for those who are unable to compete will be the principal tasks of political and financial leaders now and in the distant future. This book should be on every thinking person's reading list as a Must Read.

It's written from the actual weight loss narrative of the author, who provides her insight on the various chapters, categories, sections and points of the bariatric journey. It's well-written and easy to understand, which is a nice change to the deluge of information supplied by my surgeons office. With relearning what it means to eat, how to eat, and when to eat it, the book didn't overload my brain with nonessential information, but rather gave me the secrets to making my surgical decision a success.

Started reading "Mindset Breakthrough" tonight. I'm half way through it and only put it down because I need to sleep. Such a great book! Very easy to read and understand. Well researched. Extremely relevant. I'd recommend it to anyone trying to create new habits in their life, not just weight loss. Looks like a great manual, though only time will tell if it answers all my questions in the future. I've had great luck with Chilton manuals for decades, so I'm optimistic.

First and foremost keep in mind that this book is meant for the above average mechanic, not for a technician. So if you like to take your transmission apart this is not for you. This will help you change out just about any component in your van, provided you are already mechanically inclined.I purchased the book as used, so naturally I was expecting folded, dirty and or stained pages. The reality was that the book was practically new. I was very happy with this purchased.

I wish this were done a little better... It is not super easy to use the index. And things are not described in a super easy to follow way. However, it's probably the best option available, and is necessary if you want to take anything apart without ruining it.This paid for itself the first time I replaced a door speaker. So, for all of it's faults, I have to give it 4 stars.

This book is very detailed in the repairs/maintenance that the authors think should be explained. However, other items were merely glossed over and not adequately explained. If you have something that needs to be repaired and the authors included it in the book, you have a very good guide here. Otherwise you are out of luck.

Really enjoyed reading this book. No nonsense business advice straight from the man himself. It was refreshing to read a story of a successful company that quality of the product was the most important concern. Sadly you don't see that often enough. It was a really easy read that felt as relaxed as if you were sitting have a beer with the man himself (sounds cheesy I know). Have a new appreciation for Sam Adams and a fresh perspective for my business. Planning on reading this one over and over again.

Easy to read book. The author is very open about problems and successes encountered in his business over the years. Great insight into running a business as well as simply learning about the Boston Brewing Company. I read this for a non-fiction business book club and it lead to lively discussion and general enjoyment of the content.

Fifteen years ago I featured Boston Beer in my book Value-Creating Growth as a prime example of a well-crafted strategic construct, also well executed. Now Jim is sharing the full arc of how to build a business. Boston Beer has had, of course, it's downs and ups. 'Quench...' Can serve as a primer for established enterprises that need to ratchet up their growth. And the lessons serve equally well to paint the journey a young company must transverse.

As others have stated, Jim does a great job of explaining the how and why of what makes Sam Adams different. It was refreshing to hear someone else talk about many of the same concepts I've applied to my engineering teams over the years. Jim explains why it is so important to have a good idea, great people, focus on quality/safety, and work closely with customers. I've used similar techniques in high tech, and achieve similar results on a smaller scale.

Under the guise of a basic lessons for new entrepreneurs the book presents an interesting look at the growth of Boston Brewing along with some insights into the company's founder / first brewer Jim Koch. It's a brisk read that's generally entertaining and informative throughout. Even if you don't like Mr. Kock's beer.you'll probably wind up liking him.

I am not a huge book reader, I am someone who loses attention about 20 pages in. Quench Your Own Thirst was great from cover to cover. It shows the entrepreneur hardships and triumphs. I had never drank a Sam Adams before, but suddenly had so much respect for the company and immediately ran out to buy some.

Loved reading this book. I worked for Jim and the Boston Beer Company from 1987-1989 and the stories and business ideas he shared with me then appear here. I particularly like the String Theory and Better or Cheaper chapters. Jim started a revolution and did a startup long before startups were cool. You can learn so much from this book, and his stories. So take his advice, buy a six pack of the original Samuel Adams, pull up a stool and enjoy! Cheers, Jim

Great read. Jim's perspective on business is refreshing. It's so critical to have a sense of humor. I don't know that there was anything overly insightful, but reading about Jim's history and that of Boston Brewing Company was entertaining.
