Dark Night is an amazing short story from one of the best batman writers in recent years. Paul Dini worked on Batman the Animated series during the 90's, and during that time he was mugged on the street and left severely injured. In this story, Dini uses the caped crusader, his rogues gallery, and some other cartoons as metaphors for all the mental stress that went through him at the time.So first, hat's off to Paul Dini for writing. I know that it takes a lot of courage to right about such a personal experience, and he does a great job. His use of the Joker, Scarecrow, and others is always on point, and he knows how to make you laugh or bring a tear to your eye at the right times. But the real star of this book is Eduardo Risso on artwork. Risso blends multiple art styles seamlessly through this novel, from the 'gritty' look of crime comics to show the beating to cartoony Animaniac style drawings for Dini's extended fantasies. All of this combines for one pitch perfect story of coping with pain.
It's a true Batman story in this sense: Paul Dini was a 20-something writer for Batman the Animated Series in early 90s Los Angeles when he was mugged after a date gone bad (he liked the girl, she viewed him as a friend who may/may not help her career). The mugging was brutal, and Mr. Dini had to have corrective surgery. Already suffering from mild depression, Mr. Dini slid into a deeper funk made worse by alcohol, isolation, sloth, and self-pity.From early childhood, Mr. Dini always had an imagination that filled his space with various characters. Batman and a variety of villains speak to him (in his imagination, not in a fit of hallucinations) about what to do next. It's a personal tale that is told very well. Eduardo Risso did an excellent job on the art.
This is not a Batman tale, its a tale of how a Batman writer was mugged and humiliated then eventually learns from the Batman character, I thought it was an incredible short story that's both tragic and also motivating, I wont spoil it but for $ 15 you can't go wrong, I've read this 3x already and I encourage any Batman fan or anyone going through a difficult time in their life to read this story.
Batman as a character means a lot of things to a lot of people as the long history of the character shows. This idea comes across in this book more than most as one of the writers of the characters uses the images of Batman in his head as a sort of spirit guide to help him recover from a hideous trauma- he imagines the Batman rogues gallery is impeding his progress yet Batman steps in to encourage his recovery. The author shows us how he used this inner dialogue and the idea of Batman to bring himself back from the brink and into the world again.
I absolutely loved this book. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, other than I knew I loved Paul Dini and his work on Batman The Animated Series. The behind the scenes events written and drawn throughout are very interesting and some of the stories I had never heard. There were plenty of laughs and plenty of feels throughout. Paul does a good job of showing how feeling sorry for yourself wont get you anywhere. You need to get up when you're down, and love yourself, otherwise how can you expect anyone else to appreciate you. I've never read a "nonfiction" comic like this before, but I'd love to check out more. Seriously. Pick this up. If you're a fan of Paul Dini, Batman the animated series, Warner Bros. animation, and a story about overcoming demons, do yourself a favor and read this.
Paul Dini's Dark Night: A True Batman Story is a must read for all bat fans and is an overall great book. This story is a vivid account of one mans struggle to come back from a tragic event, while finding peace within himself. As much as it is a story of survival and redemption more than anything else it's a coming of age tale, in which the dark knight guides a young man into accepting adult hood. The art by Eduardo Russo is beautiful and only adds to this fantastical tale grounded in a harsh reality. A great read from begining to end, great for comic readers and anyone looking for a brilliant story.
Great story. I'm so glad that Paul Dini wrote about his experience in regard to such a traumatic event. I could relate to a lot of his thoughts in his personal life. This is one of those works of comic storytelling that has a truly profound and impactful message. The artwork is good, too.
Fantastic read! A very inspirational story about using our inner voices to stand up for what's right in the face adversity. The visually appealing and very detailed artwork by Eduardo Risso aids in helping the reader look into the mind of Paul Dini during his darkest times. The excellent drawings leave little to imagine for the reader to understand the trials and triumphs that the author went through.Highly recommended for anybody looking for inspiration or anyone that is a fan of the Batman animated series.Well done sirs!!!
Easily one of the best books of 2016 (arguably the best). Paul Dini shares a harrowing, life-changing event that occurred in his life during his early years at WB animation working on BTAS. The use of DC characters is smartly implemented, and the art is great at depicting events and exchanges. It reads more like a novel than a comic (even though it's formatted as such). I found myself purposely putting the book down often to save for later because I did not want to finish it. Def recommending to all.
