I loved the trilogy written by Pan Phillips partner, Rich Hobson, which began with 'Grass Beyond the Mountains.' That book tells the story of the partnership between Diana's father, Pan and Rich Hobson. Pan was the visionary who talked Rich into starting a cattle operation in the hinterlands of British Columbia beginning in the early 1930s. Hobson's second and third books are focused mostly on his story because the partnership split operations between two ranches, and then later dissolved with the partners going separate ways. Hobson's readers are left with only pieces of the Pan Phillips story so it was great anticipation that I ordered Diana's book, and I was not disappointed. She's every bit as good a storyteller in relating the Phillips part of the saga as Hobson was in telling his. It is unbelievable what hardships this group of pioneers endured making a life on the far edges of what we think of as civilization. Diana gives you a perspective from the feminine side too, where the women worked equally as hard as their men and very often harder. My own long years of raising cattle and horses here in the US with modern amenities like electricity and running water make me appreciate her story even more. I hope she writes a sequel / continuation of the saga that tells her story after leaving the Home Ranch.

Interesting and well written account of the courageous and tough men and women that opened up this far northern wilderness.

I wanted to read Diana phillips books after reading The Grass On The Other Side of the Mountain and the sequels by Richmond P. Hobson who deditcated his first book to the horses that helped him succeed his dream. I was interested in what happened with the ranchers who settled there. Very discouraged by Diana Phillips disregard and poor treatment of her animals especially as described in Beyond The Home Ranch; mostly about drinking and riding around on ATV's.Not well written nor does it end well.Would still like to know if Gloria Hobson reamained at Rimrock Ranch.

Follows right along with the Hobdon books. She fills in more of the details.

Enjoyed this as much as the books by Rich Hobson. Good continuation, explaining of the lifetimes!

Diana's memoirs are interesting after having read Rich Hobson's books preceding this one.

My husband and I met at Pan Phillips' Home Ranch in the middle of the winter in 1965. What a one of a kind character Pan Phillips was! His wife Betty was a very hard working woman who put up with a lot. This was not an easy place to reach. Airplane or horseback only. Diana does an awesome job telling about her Dad and the ranch life.

I read all rich hob sons first then read her book so I knew one side of the story first. Her book was well worth it. What extremely tough country and extre tough people to live there

One of the best biographies of Washington in a compact one-volume book. Chernow is a fine author, with an extensive vocabulary and an informed background on his subject, including what previous biographers have said. He does have an irritating habit of using "one" as a subject, such as "One wonders what Washington would have thought had he known." The "one," of course, is Chernow himself, but he wants to avoid the self-conscious "I wonder." Instead, he could have said something like, "It is interesting to speculate what Washington would have thought," or something similar. Otherwise, I found it a fascinating read, very authoritative even though the occasional slip back and forward in the timeline caused me to check dates to make sure I understood. He might be discussing something in 1789, for instance, and then mention something that happened in 1787 and then go back to 1789. This is handled pretty well, and is unavoidable in some cases, and if you check, you can see that he is conscientious about it, but it does require the reader to pay attention, not a bad thing, but something many forget to take some responsibility for.

This book is long with a small script, you have to concentrate and once you focus, the story sucks you in like water down a drain. Washington's mother was selfish, he forged his way in life in spite of her. He was a land surveyor as a teenager and amassed 1200 acres by the time he was 18. He surveyed the area in Virginia where the natural bridge is, and his initials are carved in the stone. Ron Chernow did an outstanding job researching this fine book and has a nice writing style. George Washington's friends and foes alike felt there was divine intervention as to how he stayed alive in battle. This man had a spine and showed remarkable courage under literal enemy fire. He was a visionary understanding his place in history and lived by both rectitude and probity. He turned down the title of king when debate occurred as what to call the ruler of the country. Fascinating vignette was his view of slavery which he disliked. He felt it was a losing proposition one third of the slaves being too old or two young to work, one third spending their time trying to do as little work as possible and only one third actually worked. He tested his slaves kindly and even provided for his favorite slave, Billy, in his will. A wonderful book that makes nearly every other president look like hollow shells in comparison.

It feels inappropriate to give a work of such magnitude and research 2 stars. “Washington” is chalked full of accolades and five star reviews. Chernow is academic to the highest degree. His knowledge is expansive and his writing is paired with an incredible vocabulary which is exceedingly fluid and enjoyable to read. The primary problem I had with this work was that Chernow more often assumes the role of a psychologist then that of a historian. While it is expected that some "analysis of the psyche" be done by a biographer, Chernow puts too great an effort to get inside the head of Washington. Page after page is spent trying to discern Washington’s ambitions, his love life, his temper, his feelings, his emotions—the real Washington. Ironically this seems to only further obscure this figure to me.Too often Chernow assumes what should be left to the reader to conclude. Sentences begin with statements as: “Surely this is due to Washington’s inner…”or “Washington’s insecurities were no doubt influenced by…” This is not history; it is the narrator’s voice getting to loud. I would rather Chernow had simplified his biography by stating the facts as they happened. Upon painting the picture, he could have presented--with far less dogmatism--various opinions (including his own) as to the inner mysteries of Washington.Chernow did his homework on this book and much of his recounting is enlightening. He is a talented author and a great historian, and I learned a lot throughout this biography. It is a shame he spent so much of it speculating who Washington REALLY was, instead of simply stating who Washington was—and leaving the finer mysteries for the reader to decide.

About the Author

Chris Woodhouse was born in England, and during his teenage years was a keen amateur photographer. After receiving an M.Eng. in Electronics at Bath University, he designed communication and optical gauging equipment before joining an automotive company. As a member of the Royal Photographic Society, he gained an Associate distinction in 2002. During the last thirty years, he has pursued his passion for all forms of photography, mostly in monochrome. This, coupled with his design experience, led him to invent and patent several unique darkroom timers and meters, which are sold throughout the world. After the success of his first book, Way Beyond Monochrome, he turned his attention to digital monochrome and astrophotography. He quickly found the technical challenges of astrophotography responded well to methodical and scientific methods; together with his photographic eye and experience, he produces beautiful and fascinating images.

After beginning this (expensive) hobby this past winter, I found it painful to work my way through all the details. Despite the many forums available, there is, in my opinion, very little guidance that is structured. To make matters worse, and quite frustrating (and not just for "newbies") there is a plethora of very poorly written manuals by telescope, mount, and other accessory vendors. You would think that after spending a couple thousand bucks, you'd be able to read a decent manual. The forum sites are full of queries and topics because of this sore lack of useful structured introductory manual information. But if you get the bug, there's no going back and you just learn to deal with the very disorganized information you find. There is ultimately no better teacher than experience (i.e. trial and error). Hopefully you won't break anything along the way! My information breakthrough for me came on visiting Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. The biggest treat was seeing Orion's sword -- the clearest I've ever seen including nebulosity directly without any scope-- but they also carry an excellent selection of books for beginner thru advanced astronomers. I first came upon the Firefly series there. Highly recommended for Newbies! Finally- structured direction including learning the night sky!The "best" astrophotography books out there include MAKING EVERY PHOTON COUNT (Steve Richards), Allan Hall's LONG EXPOSURE ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY, and ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY (Thierry Legault). The COMPLETE GUIDE TO STARGAZING by Robin Scagell (and the smaller Firefly binocular and telescope series are perfect for commuting) is a more general encyclopedic overview of astronomy that's well illustrated and written. The available books are not ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY for dummies books. All of them can be quite dense, even when covering topics in a general sense. They all give a necessary overview that is indispensable, and more fruitful than scattered forum bites for me. Legault's book is the outstanding technical primer but doesn't really cover image processing specifics and the others which do deal mainly with PC ASCOM, the powerful Maxim DL software package, and Photoshop when they venture into processing specifics. The vendor Starizona has a series of online tutorials on image processing which are Photoshop oriented which I found quite informative.I think Chris Woodhouse's new entry is the most modern entry. He covers hardware and accessories as well if not better than the others, and has included an entire section on Image Processing that, unlike previous books, focuses on PixInsight. Very little structured PixInsight teaching material is available despite the many video tutorials that can be found online. There's a dedicated Patrick Moore series volume due out by Warren Keller. Ultimately there are two groups it seems, the "haters" and the "lovers". The best online tutorial resource is Kayron Mercieca's Light Vortex Astronomy as well as the PixInsight website material (ADDENDUM: I forgot to mention Harry's ASTROSHED!). The PixInsight material in this volume is the best available right now in book form, and frankly sets the standard. It places the wealth of video online tutorial material I've gone through in context. The editing quibbles mentioned in a separate post are not horrible and I believe this book will only get better on future editions.Kudos to Mr Woodhouse and thanks for sharing!

This is a very good book which I would characterize as a survey aimed at the advanced level. In a nutshell, it is an Astrophotography book for those who already are accomplished astrophotographers! The author is well versed in advanced topics such as plate solving, remote control of the telescope, PixInsight post processing software, and the modeling characteristics of high end mounts such as Software Bisque’s Paramount and 10Micron’s GM1000 HPS.The content of the book is augmented by useful tables and charts. Early on there is an Astronomy Primer, and the nice aspect of it is that it is written from the perspective of astrophotography. The heart of the author is clearly with the deep sky, however. Imaging of planets does not seem to hold his interest, but for completeness, he does include an example of imaging Jupiter among the seven worked out “First Light Assignments” at the end of the book. However, the word planet does not even appear in the book’s index. The few sentences describing planetary imaging in the book are also covered in the aforementioned Jupiter First Light Assignment. Even a picture, Figure 28 on page 110, is duplicated in the Jupiter assignment (and larger to boot) as Figure 2 on page 244. By the way, this is not the only figure that is duplicated in the book. The FocusMax dialog box screen shot, Figure 10 on page 47, is also shown as Figure 2 on page 127.Nits aside, I learned a lot from this book. There is a great amount of useful information on all aspects of astrophotography, from mounts, to optics, to cameras (both DSLRs and CCDs), filters, focusers, field flatteners, mount calibration, autoguiding, control software, and of course, post processing software and techniques. However, no book is going to turn you into an accomplished astrophotographer, just as no book will transform you into a competent pilot or surgeon. It takes practice. And although there is an extensive table in the Appendixes on Diagnostics and Problem Solving, you are probably going to have to follow the path the author took to become accomplished in the field - practice, and go to the forums to get help.It is a very expensive book. The hardcover version costs close to $150, and the paperback version, $50. Yet some of the charts, pictures and tables are printed small and therefore hard to read. On the other hand, the physical execution is excellent. The quality of the materials, the printing and the images, at least in the hardcover edition (I have not seen the soft cover edition), is excellent. The Kindle edition is just as nice (some people complain that other books do not fare well when brought over to Kindle). The only disappointment is that there is no way to enlarge the too small figures or tables even on a large 27 inch Macintosh monitor. This is not an issue with Kindle - as I mentioned earlier, these figures and tables are also too small in the print edition.I deducted one star from my rating because of the number of editing issues in the book. Given the quality of content and execution, and the price point, I had hoped the writing would also be top notch. Perhaps the author should have availed himself of an Editor. Maybe it is churlish of me to criticize typos, but they do distract from the reading of the book. I will not list every instance of a typo, but in just a few pages I found the following (hard cover and Kindle editions):Page 93: “,like DeeepSkyStacker that calibrates, aligns and stack exposures.”(should be “,like DeeepSkyStacker that calibrates, aligns and stacks exposures.”)Page 93: “One reason is that many editing functions are limited to 16-bit processing and the initial severe manipulations required in astrophotography are more effective in a 32 bit.”(perhaps the sentence should end “are more effective in 32 bits.”)Page 95: A fork-mounted telescope needs to be accurately leveled and aligned with true north.(not true for all fork mounted telescopes - this is a quote from the Celestron CPC manual: “Remember SkyAlign does not care where the optical tube is pointed at the beginning of the alignment. So to make the alignment process even faster it is acceptable to move the telescope to the first alignment star manually by loosening both clutches.” All current Celestron fork-mounted telescopes use the SkyAlign procedure, so none of them need to be aligned to true north)Page 96: “Some use a method that compare the position of two or …”(should be compares.)Page 100: “Rotate the dovetail plate so that it horizontal and open up the jaws,”(should be “Rotate the dovetail plate so that it is horizontal and open up the jaws,”I checked the book’s Errata at [...] on March 31, 2016, the date I wrote this review. The Errata page was blank. In summary, this is an excellent but advanced book, and you should probably not let yourself get too annoyed by the lack of editing. If you are not quite ready to dive into the deep end of the pool, you could consider “Astrophotography” by Thierry Legault, and “The Deep-Sky Imaging Primer” by Charles Bracken. Both are available on Amazon, and the first one is also available on Kindle. Both are excellent - you can read the reviews. I will just mention that “Astrophotography” starts out with a simple chapter of photographing the sky without a telescope, and “The Deep-Sky Imaging Primer” does not cover planetary photography; its subject matter is, as the title implies, deep sky objects.

I'm very impressed with this book. I've read about a third of it so far. It is pleasant to read and is easily understood, goes into enough depth that I find it useful even after 2 years of astrophotography.

Good information! It augmented and affirmed what I was filtering out from many online sources ... too bad I didn't start with this book! I wish there was more dedicated coverage of solar system imaging (i.e. planets, moon, sun). It wasn't that it was absent, I just don't feel there was as much attention as DSO, and about the significant differences in the equipment and processes between the two.

Gives a great look at the overall process and points out the pitfalls. It provides some great resolutions to problems you wouldn't think are problems but are. Defines some of the terminology usually gained thru tribal knowledge. Written by an engineer in plain language that is easy to understand. This is a great addition to you PixInsight library.

Very good book, not for the beginner I think, need some physics background, but really like the suggestions in the book

Read it once cover to cover, now going through it again in detail.

One of the best books I've seen on astrophotography. Full of real world examples and advice. If this book was available when I started into astrophotography it would have saved me a lot of time and money. And Chris has obviously "been there". He works through problems that he has had with equipment and software. A real keeper and a good book to have next to your telescope. One minor quibble, the editing could have been tighter.

Reading fast while maintaining good comprehension has always been a challenge for me. I love how Nathan first addresses with utmost clarity the specifics of the problem in lacking the ability to read fast. I have to admit all the three problems occur to me most of the time. As I went through the reading and non-reading techniques, I learned so much. Will definitely practice the techniques written in this book.Although I do not think speed reading is applied to all kinds of reading (leisure reading, poems, etc.), one cannot deny its usefulness to a lot of circumstances.I highly recommend this book. Whether you're a student who has a lot of readings to go through, a researcher in the sciences who reads scientific journals, a lawyer with numerous cases being read everyday or someone who wants to improve speed reading (while maintaining comprehension of course), this book is for you.

Having recently purchased college textbooks, I'm no stranger to the dull, boring process of actually reading through one. It's only natural to progress through something slowly when you have no motivation. Sick of re-reading the same passages over when i wasn't comprehending them, I decided to root out the problem altogether and give speed reading a try. The low price and (thankfully) low number of pages helped me get back to my task quickly, only this time I was prepared. The book doesn't waste any time and delves immediately into the basics of speed reading, which is actually much easier than it sounds, before handing you several fun, easy speed building exercises. It details how to pinpoint information that is relevant, quickly process it, and move on. Delivers on it's promise in a shockingly short 32 pages. I'd definitely give it a try, it practically pays for itself.

No real techniques presented. One or two minor facts presented on reading. The rest is filler. In fact, if I could return it, i would.

I can't believe just how fast I am now reading after working through this book. I have heard people say before that it was possible, but with Nathan's help, I really have been able to get it working.Nathan starts by explaining why it is so important to read fast. We are hit all of the time with too much information and too little time. The only solution here is to be able to consume that information faster. Though, why don't we all do it if it is so easy? The answer as Nathan explains is because of a number of obstacles. He goes through each of these barriers including Retreating, The Voice and word Fixation and explains how to overcome them.He points out that it isn't just speed, but comprehension. Our brains can handle the additional information and we allow our believed limitations get in the way of reaching our potential. Finally, he goes step by step through measuring how fast you are now, the key techniques and then finishes up with some exercises and strategies. This was a great read and now that I am speed reading, I should be able to stop wasting time and get more information faster.

I was very pleasantly surprised that I am now able to read faster than before. The author easily explains the obstacles we have and how to overcome them. By the time you finish the book you will be able to measure how fast you’re reading and can continue to practice with the techniques and exercises he gives. I wish I had read this book when I was in school! I received a discount in exchange for an honest and unbiased review and all opinions are based on my personal experience.

Let's face it, reading is essential whether you are a seasoned professional working with a large firm or a homeschooling parent. Reading is necessary in all aspects of your life. This book presents the skills required to read quickly and efficiently. You are given links to assess your reading speeds, explains how to set goals to improve your reading speed as well. While this isn't the first book I've read regarding speed reading it is one of the better ones I've happened across.

The book is not just about how to read faster but also it gives importance about comprehension. I love to read and I read faster compared to my friends, not to brag about it, but having to read in a faster pace but still comprehending everything takes practice. They say practice makes perfect and I totally agree with that. Speed reading is also beneficial during exams, with the time limit given to answer, reading and comprehending the questions fast and accurately is an edge. With the great tips and exercise the author has given, all you need to do now is apply it and practice regularly.

I studied speed reading years ago and it increased my reading considerably. However, over the years I didn't really think about it all that much and as a result I realise by reading this book I had fallen back into some bad habits. It was an easy read with some good practical exercises and excellent basic overview if speed reading.I also applies speed reading to this book and flew through it :-)

Red Rosa: A Graphic Biography of Rosa Luxemburg, by Kate Evans

Review

“A courageous leader of the early twentieth-century socialist movement—a woman who dared to question both Marx and Lenin—Luxemburg was also, as Kate Evans reveals in this brilliant graphic biography, a person of deep passions, ecstatic insights, and ultimately, as fascism emerged from the ruins of World War I—heartbreak of historic dimensions. This book is hard to put down and contains a challenge that is impossible to turn away from: We could create a better world—peaceful, egalitarian, even joyful—if we are willing to learn from Red Rosa.” —Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Living with a Wild God “I admire it as an artist. I admire it as a writer. A huge achievement.”—Molly Crabapple, artist and author of Drawing Blood “If it were a movie, you might call Red Rosa a tour de force, but that would be short-changing it. Red Rosa is a gripping, wonderfully illustrated account of Rosa Luxemburg the person, but more importantly a straightforward and intellectually honest introduction to her politics and her theoretical contributions. It embodies everything implied by the phrase ‘Marxismus theorie und praxis.’”—Los Angeles Review of Books “A stirring and beautiful book … Red Rosa is of more than biographical or aesthetic interest as an introduction to Rosa Luxembourg’s ideas. Its massive appendix, providing lengthy quotations from source material for every citation in the comic, is an education in itself.” —Michael Robbins, Chicago Tribune “Five stars. The perfect book for [the] socialist-curious … What Rosa Luxemburg wrote about and predicted is scarily relevant today.” —John Yohe, Comics Bulletin “A story told with verve, humor, and great art.” —Trina Robbins, author of Pretty in Ink “Kate Evans deserves our gratitude for telling the tragic tale of this early twentieth-century revolutionary.” —Sharon Rudahl, author and artist of Dangerous Woman “[Luxemburg] gets her due in a full-length graphic novel biography … Red Rosa fits comfortably in this fall theme of feminist representation in graphic novels and comics.” —Sarah S. Ward, BookRiot “Wonderful. I love the way it incorporates complicated historical details into a moving biographical account.” —Mary M. Talbot, author of Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes “Luxemburg’s journey out of Poland to becoming a leader of the German Communist uprising certainly contains enough excitement to fill the pages of a graphic novel. A lively history of Luxemberg’s life and fine blend of Evans’ other areas of thematic interests of feminism, class tensions and womanhood.” —Broadly“If the bedrock of this biography is its combination of Marxist theory and historical narrative—including but not limited to Luxemburg’s participation in the international socialist movement, German politics, and the Russian Revolution of 1905—the motherlode is its touching portrayal of a woman who sacrificed her life for her beliefs.” —Jan Herman, Arts Journal “Utterly brilliant. The best book I’ve read all year.” —Steve Bell, Guardian “We need more political cartoonists like Kate Evans. She is an artist who lives her art and a radical who lives her politics … she can write about revolution, not as a historical object, but as a real, relevant, living thing, because Kate is herself a revolutionary.” —Seth Tobocman, author and artist of Disaster and Resistance “Stunningly good.” —Paul Mason, author of Postcapitalism “Red Rosa is a wonderfully composed and lively book. The story it tells is compelling, inspirational and fundamentally human. Instructional in its politics and discussions of economics, Red Rosa is also at turns humorous, romantic, and emotional. The decision to write this work in the graphic novel form was a brilliant one; if there is a biography whose multiple dimensions requires more than words to tell it, Rosa Luxembourg’s is such a biography.” —Ron Jacobs, Counterpunch “In its best moments it does a fine job of telling her story. The prison scenes are particularly good.”—Observer (“Best Graphic Books of 2015”)“Evans startles and inspires with her beautiful symbiosis of graphic and text. It is not tragedy that Evans ends with, the tragedy of Rosa’s death at the age of forty-seven and the violence of the next decades it portended, but rather the inspiration she left to her comrades and the inspiration she can still bring to those who long for change.” —Bookslut “Kate Evans’ striking pairing of word and image to tell Luxemburg’s story is so perfect that it seems surprising that no one has thought of it before.” —Sophie Mayer, The F Word “If you have ever wanted to learn about Rosa Luxemburg, this book is the perfect entry point … Kate Evans has made the stirring story of Rosa Luxemburg’s legacy accessible to a new generation of readers.” —Randy Shaw, Beyond Chron “The book has an infectious quality and an embracing enthusiasm for revolutionary ideas. It’s a perfect historic complement to the ongoing radicalisation of the Labour Party. An empowering read for would-be revolutionaries as much as for ‘old hands.’” —Morning Star “[Evans’s] storytelling is a clever mix of humor, pathos, politics, and the horrors of war … [a] compelling story of a strong, independent woman who never deviated from her beliefs.” —Booklist “A unique format that is as informed and informative as it is absolutely absorbing from beginning to end.” —Midwest Book Review “Offers an intimate view of the woman behind the revolutionary icon.” —Exberliner

I end up reading a fair number of graphic novels. The thing is that I normally just grab them from the library because I hate paying what is a higher price for a book that I will read much faster than a normal book. It makes my dollar per entertainment hour ratio increase and I’m sure that’s how most normal humans judge if they should buy a book. I am, however, glad that I purchased this book, because I can support my favorite radical publisher (Sorry, Haymarket) and I have a book I can pass along to like-minded friends – a book that most likely would not have been in my library anyways. And it’s a good book. Before reading Red Rosa, I was only vaguely aware of her as the writer of Reform or Revolution and the General Strike. I also knew that she was a martyr to the cause of worldwide socialism. What I didn’t realize was that she had to fight her own party to not just go along with the bourgeois parties, like for example voting to a man (and they were all men) for entry into WWI, and instead work towards the last lines in the manifesto – “The Communists disdain to conceal their views and aims. They openly declare that their ends can be attained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions. Let the ruling classes tremble at a Communistic revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Working Men of All Countries, Unite!” It is these lines that illuminated and drove her life from a precocious young woman in Poland to a death before her time. Well worth reading for both history and inspiration.

I found this book to be a exceptional read. The subject matter was extremely interesting and the presentation was outstanding. I will be looking for more of Kate Evans books in the future. If you're interested in this book I recommend you buy it, you will not be disappointed in the least. Also, on a side note, this is a very well printed and bound book. I am impressed.

Amazing comic book... despite the depth of it's theme, it's a tender book, about a woman with vision and attittude, trying to change the world she lived in. Kate Evans research shows through the book, as she can explain Rosa's ideas and their contexts in a way we can understand and reflect about them.As I was reading this graphic novel, I was also studiyng Economics, and it was a rich counterpoint to the Economic Liberal point of view - one must build a rich land and our entrepeneurs do it quite well, but we shall never forget that everyone should be able to have a fair share of these riches and live their lifes with dignity.

Kate Evans has composed a zesty cartoon rendition of the remarkable Marxist theorist and activist Rosa Luxemburg whose life was cut short by assassination in 1919, but please keep in mind that she takes some liberties with the truth, as I learned when I read her page-by-page notes at the end. Some people are composite characters, which I found annoying. On the bright, unexpected side, Evans is fascinated by Rosa's love life, and you will be, too.

This is a beautifully researched and presented work, presented with humor and passion, giving a vibrant (and human) sense of the life and ideas of an inspiring and intellectually brilliant representative of revolutionary socialism. Luxemburg's commitment to a deep and thoroughgoing democracy and humanism shines through this graphic biography, which gives a good sense of the historical context of Luxemburg's thought as well as of her concemporary relevance.

Kate Evans has written a surprisingly deep and moving account of Rosa Luxemburg's life that reveals both the depths of her poetic soul and humanity as well as the theoretical intricacies of Marxism. One learns the essence of use-value and market-value as well as their incompatibility; and a great deal about the history of the German revolution of 1918-1919. Luxemburg is also prophetic about the nature of capitalism's need to transform the entire world into its own image and she and Lenin were of the same mind in seeing Imperialism as the highest form of capitalism. Unlike many Marxists, Rosa saw that there was no inevitability to the revolution but that it depended entirely upon mobilizing contingent forces, the difficulty or impossibility of doing which history has demonstrated.

Rosa is the best. The art style needs some getting used to, but once you're in it's a tour-dr-force. It succinctly brings together a biography, summary, and selected works (the excerpts in the back are comprehensive). It puts an admirable, human face on all of the great theory picked up in works like 'Reform or Revolution,' explaining who she was and why she wrote what she did at the various points in her life.

This book is truly a gift, I read it in about two hours. I like the art and I am glad that I was able to add this story to my collection. I look forward to being able to read some of Rosa's own works in the future.

From the Inside Flap

Machu Picchu is one of the world's great travel destinations. Built in the mid-fifteenth century by Incan royalty and "re-discovered" by Hiram Bingham in 1911, this awe-inspiring site in the Andes of Peru is the stuff of legends. The Machu Picchu Guidebook has proven to be one of the most successful and acclaimed guidebooks to the popular archaeological treasure. In this comprehensive traveler's guide, the authors offer an almost step-by-step tour of the world-renowned Inca city, keyed to a detailed, full-color foldout map. This fully-updated and revised edition features a new artist's rendition of Machu Picchu, presented as a three-page foldout in glorious color. The painting, which first appeared as a supplement to National Geographic magazine, brings Machu Picchu to life by depicting the royal retreat as it appeared on the June 21st solstice ceremony in the year 1530, at the height of the Inca empire. Further additions include a much-expanded chapter on the holy mountain of Huayna Picchu and an all-new chapter on the birds of Machu Picchu, which includes such species as the Inca wren, found only at this site. Whether you have three hours or three days to spend at Machu Picchu, this book is the one indispensable guide. No traveler should be without it.

I'm a spaz. Anything that goes into my backpack better be dang worth the extra weight. This book 100% was. We hiked 5 days to Macchu Picchu and on the day we arrived 2 of our 5 had food poisoning. They hung outside the bathrooms and didn't even go in while the rest of us went on our tour.At first, I was bummed because I didn't use the book at all! The tour moved quickly and I didn't have time to take it out; just followed along, snapping pictures and listening to the guide. Now thankfully (Ha, I know they would not agree), my friends with food poisoning missed the tour. We ended up staying in Aguas C for a 2nd day so that the next day we could take the bus back up to MP and they could see what they just spent a ton of money and 5 days hiking to see :). That's when I got a chance to whip out this book and CRAP! It was fantastic. There was so much in here that our tour guide did not mention. Photos and descriptions; it was fantastic! Now: what I would actually recommend so that you get the best experience (heck, you prob only come here once), is get a tour guide and take his/her tour. They will show you around and also give you a chance to get familiar with the layout. They give you great information, great personal experience, etc. Plus they are pretty cheap. THEN either come up the next day, or I am sure your tour isn't that long. Then have this book and walk around by yourself. Lay out in a grassy area, and read up. Then walk around and read while you see what is in the book. The book also has great photos so now 6 months later when I pick it up, I see the photo, I see the description and then i remember how awesome it was. I'm horribly unorganized so my photos from the trip are great, but nothing is labeled so I've forgotten a lot of it. The book is worth keeping after the trip to remember the details.I also always buy a Fodor's or Lonely Planet book and then highlight or staple in menus. tickets, write notes in the pages about things we did. Such a fun way to reflect back on a trip!

In my opinion, this guidebook is a must for anyone visiting Machu Picchu. I'm well travelled and feel this is the best guidebook I have ever purchased. Some reviewers complain about the small print on the building diagrams, this is because of the detail that is provided in the book -- not a real problem, bring a small magnifying glass if your eyesight is weak. When traveling, I believe you see what you know, and this guidebook is a treasure trove of easily understood detailed information. If you only want to spend a couple of hours strolling around Machu Picchu to say you have been there, than this isn't the book for you. If you have interest in learning about this magnificent archeological site, again this guidebook is a must for you.

I can't imagine why this book is no longer being published. It is the best guide to this site. I read it after after spending a few days in Machu Picchuand understood much better what this treasure looked like and what the purpose of each building was. The pullout artist's rendering of the site as it might have looked in the 1400s from National Geographic is amazing and put the site together in my mind. I wish that I had it before the trip. A must read for all who intend to visit this amazing site!

Forget the other so called "guidebooks". This one comes straight from people who have actually researched, explored and participated in archeological digs at Machu Picchu. Detailed examinations of all the different areas of this city in the clouds, with no bullcrap explanations concerning the history and uses of the buildings, patios and fountains. There is a color map in the back with suggested routes through the ruins and also a National Geographic painting of the city as it would have been at the height of the Inka Empire. If you are anticipating a visit, or would just like to learn more about Machu Picchu THIS is the guide to buy.

As many others have said, the photos are old and fuzzy, the sketches are sometimes difficult to comprehend, and the text is dense and scholarly. But until somebody creates something better, this is absolutely the best Machu Picchu guidebook you can buy. It will even help you distinguish the true stuff your guide tells you from the made up stories he thinks us gringos want to hear.

If you are contemplating a trip to Peru which includes a visit to Machu Picchu, do yourself (and anyone traveling with you) a favor and get this guide. It enables you to conduct your own tour of the site, seeing just what you want to see and not what a guide wants you to see. We went to Machu Picchu with this guide book and a guide, spent the first hour-and-a-half with the guide getting a "lick and a promise" at a dozen or so points chosen by the guide, and struggling to hear and understand what he was saying. When he was finished, we took off on our own with Ruth Wright's self-guide and spent the next two-and-one-half hours seeing and understanding the significance of things we had walked right past in the guided tour (and getting the correct information on things that the guide had provided incorrect or semi-correct information on). As a bonus, the book has a large number of color and black-and-white photographs that are really useful after you return home in correctly titling your own photographs and having the correct explanations for them if viewers have questions about things in your photographs. Although the book is not pocket-sized, it will easily fit into a small pouch so it can be carried while visiting the site (and that's what it's intended for -- I read it on the plane on the way down and found it not to be that helpful without the site in front of me, despite the fact that it is well illustrated). The Wrights (Ruth and her husband Ken) have spent years working with Peruvian archeological experts to explore, map, and understand the site and this book give you the fruits of their labors. Highly recommended.

#573,577 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I had just bought an original USMC 40X and wanted to get the history of the model. I was lead to believe that this was the best book on Remingtons, the 40X in particular. OK, pictures are fairly high quality, except that the rifles go across two pages and you lose a large chunk of the picture in the crease. The history is interesting and generally carries on thru each model "covered." Yep, "covered." I was interested in 3 models: 40X, 541-T, and the 504. The history on the 40X was OK. There was no mention of the other two. To make things worse, the index is awful. There are a couple of model numbers listed, and I mean a couple. A rifle as significant as the 40X is not listed. Even the 700 does not get listed. If you can get this book cheap then go for it. Its worth say $10 or less.

Nice book if you are interested in the history of Remington

Great reference book

Very good, this is a book I'll return to over and over while researching individual guns by Remington. Right now I'm mostly interested in the #1 Rolling blocks and there is a lot of info on individual military orders in addition to the #1 Sporting Rifles.

On time and for a good price.

I would quantify this book as more of a coffee table book than I would a detailed reference book. Details are few and far between on specific models and the book mainly focuses on the early history of the company rather than it's products.

Good published material.

I'm a rollingblock shooter and have been for the past 13 years. For me this is a good book and I have added it to my collection.
