Going to bed hungry--in his cabin near Ballymena, where Saint Patrick once lived--he dreams that the saint sends him to Dublin, where ``you will hear what you were meant to hear.'' After the saint's third dream-visitation, the peddler complies and meets a Dubliner who scoffs at his own three dreams- -about a treasure back in Ballymena, where the peddler duly finds it. In Sawyer's tale, he builds a chapel for weary travelers; here, the still-generous peddler's wealth allows him to have a beautiful wife and children, but the updated conclusion doesn't really change the story's essential tenor. Johnson renders an idyllic countryside in the spirit of Constable, but the romantic landscapes don't overwhelm the story (as Thomas Locker's tend to do); rather, they make a dramatic setting for the lively, effectively characterized figures. I loved reading this book to my kids because of the emphasis on the importance of paying attention to the dreams we have at night.

The "Irish" story told in this short, 1993 book, despite the author's endnote about its origin, is very similar to the shorter story told in Uri Shulevitz's 1978 Caldecott Honor book, The Treasure. In both stories, a poor man travels many miles to meet someone on a bridge, where he is told that a treasure awaits him at home. In The Treasure, the man finds it in his stove; in St. Partrick and..., it is found under the hearth. Hodges adds many more details, specific place and personal names, and a message about the importance of literacy, but both stories are built on the same general framework.

Having long admired John Curry's skating, I was interested in learning about what it took to become (in my opinion), the greatest skater ever. Many of the answers are found here: discipline, tragedy & musicianship. There is little doubt Mr. Curry could have been one of the finest dancers of his or any other day, yet was denied that chance by a cruel, close-minded father. Dancing's loss was skating's gain, although I am saddened Mr. Curry is not better known. If this book paints John as an unlikeable person, it also does a fine job of explaining why he was that way. Demon or Deity, I am still intrigued by Mr. Curry's magic.

I wish I had not waited two years to read this book. Easily one of the best figure skating books and sport biographies I have ever read (and I was a figure skating book collector back in the 1990s.) This author did so much research, so many interviews and tried to describe the psyche of an athlete and artist who did not share much with many. After reading this, you really shake your head at the coverage of the last Olympic Games - knowledge and respect of Curry could have leant itself well to coverage of Rippon and Radford as out Olympians.Also: if you grew up thinking Curry's MSG performances were pivotal (usually thanks to having read A Very Young Skater as a kid), you might be surprised to see them given so little attention here. I don't know if that's because the author didn't find them important or because they actually weren't important in the large scheme of things. I'm eager to delve more into those performances to see which it is.

I was on the fence about reviewing this book since I didn't finish it... but there was a reason for that.I love John Curry's skating - he brought it to a new level and it really is the epitome of artistry on ice.But after reading 3/4 of the book, I realised I like John Curry much better as an athlete than a person. In fact, he came across as a bit of a prat.The book was good enough that I will go back and finish it but I think a bit of downtime before I do so.

One of the best written bios I've read. It managed to show his flaws while remaining sympathetic. The story itself is fascinating. John tried to invent a whole new form of highbrow ice entertainment but didn't have the temperament or business acumen to manage a troupe. Recommended to all skating fans.

I think it is well written. I was fortunate to have met John have a skating lesson with him and to skate in a show with him at the old skyrink. I did not know a lot about his history except what I read. When you train at something for years there are going to be highs and lows. He changed the face of male figure skating in my opinion for the better. My one word for john curry, GENIUS. Thank you John.

Everything you wanted to know about the mysterious John Curry; his ambition, goals, what his friends went thru with his moodiness. He was a pioneer that changed the sport for the better. It was also a bit dishy on fellow skaters Jo Jo Starbuck & Dorothy Hamill and the major ice shows like Ice Capades.

I would have included "genius" in the title. Heartbreaking profile of a true artistic genius who singlehandedly changed and elevated the sport of figure skating into an art rivaling ballet. Be sure and watch his videos on YouTube, especially the programs "After All" (choreographed by Twyla Tharp), and his own choreogrpahy to Debussy's "Afternoon of a Faun." He acheived incredible beauty.

BRILLIANT book! I tend to only read biographies and many of them are tedious in too many chapters. This book on John Curry is sensational and well-deserving of my five stars. It is gripping and fascinating ALL the way through. Unbelievable details and accounts from start to finish.

I bought every Examcrackers 1001 book. I enjoyed the Chemistry and Organic, but this was the least helpful and poorly representative of MCAT passages. It is good as a forced review of the stand-alone Qs, but you'll need to know when you see a mistake in passage sections and to not take them seriously. I got a 13 on the bio section, but I'm currently working on a phd in biology related field, so I wouldn't credit that score to this book. I did not use any other MCAT bio review books, but did use Barrons flashcards and downloaded A&P podcasts for review.

I really enjoy the Examkrackers 1001 Series as I believe the help show clear examples of some necessary subjects important for the MCAT that could easily be missed. Also with so many questions, key concepts can really be practiced and learned well.However, that being said, my one problems with this whole series is that it seems the books are riddled with errors here and there. As a student freaking out at trying to understand every concept, it's not a great feeling to be in a state of confusion when it is the books writers error.

I used this book in conjunction with the exam krackers mcat study prep. I felt like this book did a great job giving me extra practice for the mcat. After going through the exam krackers books, I needed more practice ding passages in the biology section. This book has good solid passage and questions that in my opinion mimic the mcat as closely as possible. The book is divided into sections that go along with the exam krackers lectures so I suggest if you use exam krackers, to purchase this book before you start so you can go along with the lectures. This book was great for me as a supplement to the exam krackers series. It helped me score a 12 on the biological sciences section.

Great supplement for technique building. Don't hesitate to purchase if you want to improve your bio score! Although the book is from 2003 it still helps to build vital MCAT test taking skills, in addition to providing good information to aid studying.USE this as an AID to your studying, however; do not rely on this for total score improvement.

Extensive passage based content is a great way to prepare for the MCAT biological science section. This book is made of passage based questions and discrete questions, in proportion to what you will see on test day. The EK material is superior in the endocrine system, but is a little scant on the musculo-skeletal system and explaining the eukaryotic cell. I recommend supplementing that with other material like The Princeton Review.With that said, there is NO SUBSTITUTE for taking practice test and questions, and this book has them it spades. Beyond just content, it teaches you to pay attention to the wording of a question as well as the MCAT question format. I HIGHLY recommend this.

This book has a lot of bad errors. For example, a passage based question asks what bacterial (Not single celled eukaryotic) strain would be affected the most by an anti-mitosis agent, a rapidly dividing one, a moderately dividing one, a slow dividing one, or all equally. The CORRECT answer is all equally because bacteria don't undergo mitosis, they undergo binary fission, however the book's answer is the rapidly dividing one. If you can keep your sanity through errors such as this, this book will help you improve in biology, but if you get a few wrong that you were 99-100% sure in your mind about dont sweat it because its probably a mistake.

Peters book on Networking the Soviet Union is less a tale of the technology developed in the then Soviet Union than a tale about the structure of the centralized bureaucracy that managed to nearly bankrupt the entity. As regards to the actual technology I would go back to the mid-1970s when I was in Washington. At the time I was at Comsat and was "befriended" by the Technical Attaché at the Czechoslovakian Embassy. Also the home of the Cuban delegation as less than an idle point of interest. As part of my tasks at the time I followed my new friend around as he tried from one occasion to another to collect data on US telecommunications and network systems. At the same time, I had the task of connecting what was then the early stage of the ARPA Net to the Intelsat system connecting Etam West Virginia to Goonhilly in the UK and Trondheim in Norway. In the US we basically placed all of this in the public domain so I would guess my "friends" job was fairly easy.I saw him I believe in the Fall of 1977 at a Conference at Cornell at which time the Diffie Hellman encryption algorithm was discussed. I guess that half the attendees were not necessarily who they may have said they were.Then some twenty plus years later I now had partners in Russia running my Russian network and the former head of the Czech PTT was now my Czech partner. My former "friend" used to work for him. Small world. Since I had worked on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Negotiations in the late 1970s, doing the networking for the seismometers, my Russian friends clearly knew me. During one of my conversations I was told by my Czech partner, a senior figure both in Czech as well as Soviet circles that they used the Bell System Technical Journals to design their telecom systems and the IEEE journals for data systems.In fact, one of my Russian partners was one of the first to introduce the Internet to Russia and we completed the task in the late 90s. As such I have a different view than the author, one based on technical facts of the network and its operations.This book is NOT about the Internet or its Soviet clone from a technical or operational perspective. Rather it is about the Soviet bureaucratic system and the need to make some sense out of its overwhelming administrative overhead using networks on both the economic administrative side and the military side.Chapter 1 is a discussion of Wiener and Cybernetics. The author presents one of the best discussions regarding the acceptance of Cybernetics in the Soviet Union I have seen. Wiener was a brilliant mathematician and in addition could think in large scale systems. His book on Cybernetics was warmly received in the US but its theme was understanding large scale systems and the US was no longer, at that time, interested in that. It was moving from a War footing and into a capitalist industrial footing in the 50s. The Soviet Union on the other hand was further consolidating a centralized command and control economy and Wiener's ideas rang bells. Thus they adopted his view of the world. Chapter 2 presents a good overview of how the Soviet Union then took these ideas and tried to integrate them into this centralized world.Chapter 3 is allegedly an attempt to present the networks used. It really is a discussion of the people and the politics and not the technical issues. Although interesting I really wanted to see some discussion of what the Russian had implemented and how their designs differed from ours. There were a mass of varying data protocols and data speeds and network transport mechanisms that were developed in the US and I wondered what did the Soviets do in parallel. The author depicts the Soviet's response as a response to SAGE and then I wondered what the response was to the packet ideas of Baran. In fact, the work of Roberts and in turn Kahn at ARPA were almost all in the open literature and the goal was a survivable network, apparently perceived by the Soviets as a threat. If so I wondered just what they did. I am certain that there must now be a great deal of unclassified CIA and DIA reports that would clarify that but the discussion is missing.Chapters 4 and 5 go through the 60s and then 70-80s respectively and the author presents the principals who tried to accomplish something in this realm. The politics seemed to be always creating roadblocks and the innovation that ARPA allowed seemed to foster what we have today.The author has an interesting discussion on the Mansfield Amendment, that in 1969 put an end to DoD funding anything but specific program supported work. Until that time DoD funded what has become the foundation of our information based economy, and with Mansfield we saw a total collapse of that development. I often wondered if the Soviets saw that for what it did.Overall the book is an excellent presentation of the people and politics of what would become some of the infrastructure in the Soviet Union. I wondered what the role of a RosTelecom would be in that mix, an element not discussed. In addition, the Soviets had satellites the Molyniya System which were not equatorial but polar, and thus their communications ground stations were expensive and subject to failing. Their cable connections were also mixed with spotty interconnections across the wide expanses. The author provides some maps but it would have been more useful to have some detail.This is a well-organized and presentation of the system, as politics, not the system as technology. Given how closely the Soviets monitored US technology and how open we were then and now, I have often wondered what the Russian created from whole cloth and what was reproduced. The Russians were and are technologically on a par with the West in terms of human capital but it was often the weight of the system that slowed them down. That burden was lifted after the fall but I wonder how much may have returned.During the period from 1960 thru 1990 Russia developed a variety of networks, many for military use and many for central command and control. Based upon my own personal first hand experience working with them they clear were at the same level as the west. Thus in rethinking the book by Peters teviewed here, thought that his title was most likely totally out of place.Using the title How Not to Network a Nation: The Uneasy History of the Soviet Internet was in my opinion out of place. The Internet was a construct that grew out of the arrogance of AT&T more than any uniqueness on the part of US technology. If AT&T had agreed to work with ARPA then this would have just been an extension of the monopoly network. Instead the arrogance of the monopolist, the entity that saw itself above everything else, created the creative destruction that led to its collapse.Thus there is a real story of a set of brilliant technologists in Russia that may very well go untold. It was not a question of "How Not to" but the advantage the early ARPA team had in facing an adversary, not Russia but AT&T, and having the resources to overcome it.Perhaps some day there will be a work on Soviet networks, a works which commends the efforts of many brilliant men and women in Russia who created a parallel universe and who when the borders fell allowed in a seamless manner the full expansion of the global IP network.If one further looks at the time one also sees the IBM SNA network, akin to many of the centralized schemes we may see in Russia and Europe. But as a backdoor way to get around AT&T we had TCP/IP.Thus understanding the reality of what occurred, it is not, "How not to" but ask ourselves the question; what really happened. Also one hopes there is a tale of Russia's advances to tell the complete story. From that we can learn that our then adversaries were as bright as we think we were.

Thanks to Dr. Peters for an excellent exploration of an important moment in our collective (unconscious?) history. Relevant and recommended to all who enjoy history, complexity, and the internet. Also relevant for all who resist defining culture and identity as functions of their surrounding negative space.

There are often questions or ideas that when you first hear them, you ask yourself: why didn’t I think of that? In How Not to Network a Nation: The Uneasy History of the Soviet Internet , author Benjamin Peters (Professor, Department of Communication at the University of Tulsa) asks the simple question: why didn’t the Soviet Union create something akin to the Internet before the US did?This is the same Soviet Union that beat the US in the cold war space race. So why didn’t they do that when it came to interconnected networks?Peters writes that the Soviets did try to create an interconnected network, but were never able to get it right. The Soviets had no shortage of brilliant scientists that could have gotten them to that goal. So it was clearly not lack of brainpower that stymied the Soviets.The book begins with a somewhat dry overview of the global history of cybernetics and how it was used by the Soviets. Peters than gets into the intricacies of the mindset of the communist party and how it was what largely precluded the development of any sort of interconnected network.Victor Glushkov, one of the leading Soviet cybernetic scientists plays a large role in the book. He created what was known as the All-State Automated System (OGAS in Russian) which could have led to an autonomous ARPANET-like network in Russia if deployed. In fact, Glushkov proposed the idea of OGAS in 1962, years before ARPANET went live in 1969.Peters is of the opinion that while the Soviets had the raw brainpower to create an early ARPANET-like network, the failure to execute on that was due to entrenched bureaucratic corruption which was systemic in Communist Russia, in addition to conflicts of interest within the Soviet system.While the Americans saw ARPANET as a way to share information and knowledge, Soviet bureaucrats thought such a network would undermine communism and threaten their control of the Soviet economy.ARPANET was developed due to the collaboration of its developers in addition to grants from the National Science Foundation. Peters writes that ironically, the Americans that created ARPANET behaved more like socialists, while the Soviet scientists behaved more like capitalists.Peters has written the definitive narrative on the topic. This book is a really great book. However, I make one observation before I recommend you reading this. You must have attempted or completed at least one very large c++ program. You must be familiar with various design patterns. Have attempted to use said design patters at least one or twice.C/C++ to me is about your progression in learning the language. Most people start out small begin learning and slow progress to much larger programs. As you make your way to these larger programs you run into some fundamental logic flaws (or design flaws). This book helps shed some very useful and en lighting information on these flaws. Be it you think it's a language flaw or design flaw in your programming. This book will give you some very useful tools to be used medium to large scale c++ programs. It is a most definitely on my recommendation of books to read for a C++ programmer.

In learning programming, different textbooks suit different purposes ...Let's divide up the task of becoming a C++ software engineer specialising in programming challenging systems ...(1) learning the essentials of programming;(2) learning the essentials of low level programming with its bit fiddling logical operators and implementation issues;(3) learning C++ syntax;(4) learning C++ development tools;(5) picking up knowledge of the situational logic of software engineering;(6) picking up knowledge of object oriented and procedural and other approaches to programming solutions to given problems and picking up the common sense to know the best approach to a given problem;(7) learning C++ libraries;(8) learning STL the standard template library;(9) picking up knowledge so that one can develop an appropriate C++ style to the task at hand, whatever the task at hand may be ... knowing that educational miniprojects and real medium sized to large systems have different needs in this respect.In this matter I am trying to distinguish knowledge and skills. I maintain that this book essentially deals with topics (2) (5) (6) (7) and (9) as outlined above, with application to the perculiarities of C++. In other words, this is an advanced work and should not be the first C++ book a first year university student should buy! First things first you need to buy a language primer ...Nevertheless once one has mastered the basics of C++ this is an excellent work to start picking up rules of C++ style. Helpfully the author includes a number of items which describe typical C++ blunders that result from inadequate mastery of the basics of C++. Therefore after learning the basics of C++ most students would benefit by reading this book cover to cover! The explanations are clear and terse and if contemplated will enable many a conceptual misunderstanding of typical C++ semantics in C++ typical implementations to be clarified.From earlier editions some of the advice has changed. There is a helpful table pp277-9 that describes a mapping of relevant items between the 2nd and 3rd editions! That the author has consolidated and clarified his advice on good C++ style is a good thing given how often he is cited in both industry and academia. Some advice has been updated to deal with the C++ 11 standard adopted two years ago; some has been updated to deal with the latest in C++ development technologies and libraries ...Well worth reading even for the experienced programmer. Well worth buying even if you have an earlier edition. I really must find time now to read this properly cover to cover ... as I've read two of his earlier works!

I spoke to Scott Meyers about this series at a time when he was in doubt about it. He has been criticized as one who has not held a production programming job. He openly admits to this and summarises relevant credentials in his discussion on this subject. I praised the work and thanked him for his contribution for this reason: In production programming we become known for specific routines, and despite our higher proficiency in other areas, we are hired again and again to solve the same or similar problems. We have lists, sometimes good agenda and at other times mental intentions that are rarely addressed. He takes the time to look for issues that "bite back" and to write those small, sample programs to which we never get around and those that might change our way of doing things if we were only to know the result. Enrolment in his courses demonstrates that he has a knack for teaching and his clear and insightful explanations and examples highlight that pedagogical virtue in his texts.

This book is not a reference manual.This book is not a "how to program" in C++.What the author has done is outline some very important aspects of C++ programming that are either not taught in the typical college curriculum, or easily forgotten, or completely misunderstood.This book has 55 topics. The order they are listed in kinda makes sense. Overall it seems that the topics are listed from simple first to complicated last. There is a short introductory chapter explaining the order of the topics.I really like how the author describes C++ as a "federation" of languages. That's in the first chapter/introduction. It just keeps getting better and better.A few of the topics were common sense and made me wonder if it was really worth mentioning. However, I see some really stupid idiotic code on a daily basis, so apparently there are programmers out there that need to be reminded of the basics.Some of these topics blow my mind. I mean really, this guy must have spent months just researching the behaviors of the C++ compiler to figure some of this stuff out.I have nothing negative to say about this book.

Every C++ programmer should learn the items in this book. I knew some of them but they explain the details of each and give good examples of WHY things should be done specific ways. I've been programming in C++ for over 15 years and I still gained a lot of valuable knowledge from this book.
