This 9th Edition of Coe's The Maya, now co-authored with eminent Maya scholar Stephen Houston, is a major improvement over the last several additions. Houston's expertise in Maya writing means that the book is up-to-the-minute on many issues relating to Classic Maya religion and courtly life, and the chapter on "Maya Thought and Culture" has been almost completely re-written to reflect Houston's expertise on the subject. Similarly, this edition rolls in some major recent discoveries about Preclassic Maya civilization which are most welcome, and an appendix has been added listing the names of significant Maya rulers and the dates known for their reigns, which will be helpful for those trying to puzzle through references to specific characters in Maya history.Houston's contributions are also noteworthy for incorporating bite-size summaries of the ideas laid out in his own books for specialists, including brief treatments of morality and personhood, gender roles/norms, and the material world that will be familiar to readers of, say, The Memory of Bones, The Classic Maya, or The Life Within.The illustrations are wonderful, and there are even more of them than in previous editions. Some images that are exceedingly hard to find have been worked into the present edition, which alone are worth the cost of the book.My only real gripe is that the style of the prose is, at times, distractingly dated. In part this is because portions of the text are unchanged (or barely changed) from the original 1966 edition, at which time the book's target audience would presumably have understood the references to Pilgrim's Progress and been comfortable with the occasional Latinate stylistic flourishes. These days, however, a typical college-aged (or even college-educated) reader is unlikely to find such flourishes helpful or accessible. Some of these, such as a reference to a goddess that is "easy with her virtue" (p. 255) and "dwarves and other malformed people" who comprise "the most bizarre courtiers (at least from our vantage)" (p. 93), are likely to distract or alienate, rather than engage, a younger readership.That being said, this is still the best book going for someone who wants to do some basic "reading up" on the Maya before visiting ruins or wading into a more detailed treatment like Sharer and Traxler's The Ancient Maya. The 9th edition is a major step forward in terms of its content, and I look forward to following The Maya through many editions into the future.

If you're expecting to get a clear, simple story of what the Ancient Maya were "really like," sorry, you won't get it here. What you WILL get is a very thorough, but very readable, survey of the challenging archeological history of the Ancient Maya that makes it impossible to give simple answers about their culture. Where answers are available, though, this book presents them squarely into context, and shows how the scholars got to their conclusion. As a result, it's also an excellent field guide for tourists -- for every Mayan site large and small, Coe explains what to look for, and how it furthered our understanding.

This, the 9th edition of the book, contains updated information based by on both field excavations and academic research. Excellent and detailed review of Mayan civilization through the Late Post-Classic. Coverage of both thematic subjects , e.g., history, art, writing; as well as all major and many less prominent Mayan sites including integrated information on thematic issues. Maps included for the three major (Pre, Classic, Post) eras showing Mayan cities (but not contemporary ones, which would have been helpful). A variety of photos from different sources are included as well as a significant number of well- done drawings. Very useful references appear at end of volume. At 900+ pages not an easy read but writing is lucid with a minimum of academic jargon. Contains intro to Mayan cuneiform writing but more extensive coverage is available in other recent publications ( see especially Teadung Maya Art, by stone and Zender, 2011).

For scholarship and completeness this book deserves SIX stars out of five. Unfortunately I was looking for something less scholarly and more accessible. Lots of material on architecture, art, and demographics but the story is too deep and complex for the casual reader.

This was a very interesting book that helped me fill in some history that I had not learned ( or forgot) in the past. There was a huge amount of detail in this book that made reading all the way through, but it was also interesting enough to keep me reading.My major complaint is that there were not enough maps to help the reader keep track of all the places described, especially because the narrative jumped around quite a bit.Before I read this book I watched several programs on TV about the Mayan civilization that has greatly expanded based on the ground penetrating radar that has revealed many formerly unknown cities and temples. I recommend this book to anyone else who saw those shows and wants more information.

Not sure why, but I have always had a fascination with the Mayan culture. So looking for a book for a trip, I ran across this book and I am glad I did. This book with several updates is not the easiest book to read and is more like a textbook than a book for pleasure. However, it definitely leaves no stone unturned and that background is fascinating as well. While after reading the book I am still no expert on the subject of the Maya I do believe that I have a much great understanding of their culture, way of life and struggles. I am currently looking to book a trip to the region to see some of the ruins.

Coe and Houston have made this edition the best ever. (We have the 7th edition and have read others over the years). Succinct, clear and comprehesive; a must for any Mesoamerican library!

This is an excellent text book, full of facts and occasionally a few paragraphs of prose in story form. The author has a first hand knowledge of the research into the Mayans and traces a path from prehistoric times through through to the population of five million Mayans inhabiting today the Yucatan Peninsula. It is a shame that the spanish invaders of 1530 and beyond have obliterated much of the history and meanings of the many glyphs. There is still a lot to uncover in the jungle the same as the buried Egyptian civilization under the sand.

I recently visited Nigeria for the first time. Business trip. This is not a guide book in any traditional sense but an overview of Nigerian history and customs. It certainly helped me to navigate the culture and to avoid faux pas (I think).

Well written book telling of culture, geography and historical information of Nigeria. Well researched. Well written.

This is not the first time I have purchased a book from this series. I have used one on Sweden as well as others. This one on Nigeria is accurate and straightforward. This is a country with a poor reputation for dishonesty, greed, and corruption yet the author addresses these subjects head on and does not duck the issues. I appreciated the honesty and have scheduled a trip to see a friend there in the next 6 months. I am hoping for a success.

This is more about how to get along if you're staying in Nigeria a long time rather than if you're visiting. But it's still an interesting book. I didn't need it though, because I was just visiting Nigeria.

All the information in this book was "spot on". I used it before traveling to Jos, Nigeria to visit missionary friends who had been living there for 4 years. They verified and reinforced everything in the book. I have recommended it to them and others.

That night, while sitting by the river, the unhappy tuba meets a bullfrog, who sings a beautiful tune. The next day, inspired by his new friend, Tubby enthusiastically plays the melody for the orchestra, winning the acceptance of the conductor and the other instruments. The colorful cartoons, showing an apple-cheeked Tubby clothed in a T-shirt and red sneakers, create a retro mood without looking dated. This title stands alone as a great introduction to the orchestra for children. However, reading the story while listening to the accompanying CD, which is narrated by the late author, is even better. The orchestra's tuba, Tubby grows tired of supplying the steady "oompah" background and longs to play melodies. Discouraged by the other instruments' reaction to his one attempt, Tubby ambles off one evening and finds inspiration down by the river, where a friendly frog offers help and encouragement. Written by actor Tripp as a child's introduction to the orchestra, the musical story of Tubby the Tuba was released as a short, puppet-based animated film in 1947, a book in 1954, and a longer animated feature video in the 1970s. Cole's colorful retro-style artwork endows the instrument-characters great emotional expressiveness. He uses the large format to good advantage, creating scenes that are varied in their effects and show up well from a distance. The accompanying CD, which slides into a pocket inside the back cover, features Tripp reading his story with orchestral accompaniment, as it was meant to be heard. Sometimes paired with Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, this child-friendly introduction to the orchestra looks very appealing in Cole's picture-book version. Very nice book and CD. I had the original LP when I was a kid and this is a remake - but with the author narrating and a good orchestra is very very close to that original first recording. Got it for the grandchildren to introduce yet another generation to orchestra music.

My 4 year old loves this book! Before introducing the CD, I read it to her every night for a week so she would know when to turn the pages. She's listened to it at least once a day for the past month and has the entire thing memorized. Sometimes she'll even read it out loud to herself - from memory - without the CD. Needless to say I feel like I've gotten more than my money's worth. The narrator is wonderfully dramatic. The music is beautiful.

My 2-year-old son loves to play the CD and "read" this book. It's a sweet story and I love that he is getting to hear and learn about instruments of the orchestra.

I am so glad I got this, more for me than for my kids. Classic Tubby the Tuba story on the CD. The book follows the CD, but the pictures are more updated than the old classic cartoon. Still a winner!

Very cute story. Narrated nicely. Orchestra parts highlight the text. Super introduction to the orchestra.

I teach this to my first grade general music classes every year. Excellent introduction to the orchestra and gives an opportunity to assess for understanding of HIGH and LOW sounds.

This is a wonderful book and a great way to introduce young children to musical instruments.

Our kids love this book! We have read it hundreds of times. They also really enjoy listening to the CD when mommy and daddy get tired of reading the book over and over. :-)

Great collection of interesting work, but the quality of this editon is awful. Mine came with multiple cracks in the binding, and the print doesn't look great either.

What you will find:--Sphere packings, ie the problem of packing spheres in order to maximize density.--The problem of Kissin numbers: maximize the number of adjacent sphere to a given sphere in a lattice--Code, design, and Groups--Error correcting codes--Leech lattice--Integral quadratic forms--Voronoi cell--many, many other subjectsWhat you WON'T find in this book:--The study of Delaunay cells (or holes, L-polytopes) is quite limited--The study of continuous families of lattice is not done, you won't find the Voronoi memoires here--There is just one page on computational aspects of latticeNevertheless this book is excellent

I have this checked out of the county library, but two weeks or two years,I would still have trouble reading it all.Dr. John Conway is one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th century and Dr. Sloane isn't very far behind that. With their friend John Leech,they have published this landmark in the history of group theory that seems destined to be beside Coexter's work as the most influential work onon the theory of higher Euclidean and hyperbolic n dimensional groups.That these groups have been related to the practical area of error free coding in information theory has made this knowledge both interesting and useful as well. With some awe I realize how much thought and workwent into writing this book.I you were Dr. Sloane or Dr. Conway, you would have to ask yourselves, how can you ever top this?This book is not "easy" reading, it hasn't been dumbed downand the results are real enough for anybody.

I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this amazing book. It is written so well the words just flow. It was not a page Turner...Only because I forced myself to stop reading to make the experience last. Wow!

I loved reading this book. I am not a reader but I couldn't put this one down. Jennifer's style is like a well written poem and you, the reader, hold the key to believing that no matter what she went through, God was always watching out for her. Now emerging from all the horror of her life, I quickly decided that Jennifer will be full of fortune for the rest of her life. She deserves it! Tell everyone you know to read this book.

This was a great book. I read it in a very short period of time as I just wanted to see what came next. The author, Jennifer, takes you on her very painful life journey, and you feel like you are being brought in to her world. While it is a painful story - it is so well written. Good read.

Amazing read! Read it cover to cover with a small window (sleep) straight through. Even though there is such darkness surrounding her story, Jennifer so beautifully portrays the grace and beauty of her life in spite of what has happened to her along the way. This is one of those few books I would read again, just because!

This was one of the most raw and beautiful memoirs I have ever read. Fierce, intricate, and at times grotesque, the author guides us vividly through her desolate childhood, the extreme trauma of escaping a serial killer, and the surreal aftermath of not being believed.Severely neglected as a girl, the author retreated within her young mind to create a world of warmth and affection that she so desperately craved in order to survive the absence of love. Her adult rendering of her childhood self is so poignantly expressed that it gives one the sense of having lived the heartache alongside her.The inevitable telling of the pivotal event of her life; her kidnapping, sexual assault, and torture at the hands of a brutal murderer is only a small chapter in the larger narrative. It is what came after that stuns and horrifies the reader: no one believed her. "She tells stories" her mother told police. The lack of support, validation, and the outright dismissal of the crime resulted in an already fragile soul being pushed past the limits of human sanity.But she never gave up. Asbenson pulls the reader through the nightmarish years she endured in mental hospitals and shines light on the little things that helped her to survive. Merely surviving wasn't good enough for this amazing woman; she learned how to fight back, embrace her warrior self, and thrive.Eventually the monster she escaped was captured and convicted of killing 8 other souls. As the only survivor, the author details her emotional reaction to being able to identify him and testify against him in court, leading to his conviction. She describes the sweet validation, but also the immense responsibility of being the only one of those women left with a voice.Now wrapped safely in self-love and accomplishment, the author is a beacon of resilience and survival. How blessed we are in this world that she gave us this powerful true story. Read this book, even if it's hard. You'll be a better person for it.-SFB

i had seen the author-Jennifer Asbenson on one of those t.v. shows like I SURVIVED and then on dr. oz and i wanted to find her online so i did... on f/b-as she was writing her book-she would share a chapter with us online-i was AMAZED at her writing, i never read anyone who writes like she does and i read, EVERY NIGHT-i was 'chosen' to read it online before the book came out and i didn't want to READ IT ONLINE-I HATE READING ONLINE but one sunday-i kicked back here at my desktop and i started reading and i ended up reading the whole book that afternoon-i have never read a book where there wasn't at least, some boring-blah-blah-blah-before you got back to the good part-this book is ALL good! it took me back to when i got away from an attacker in 89 by the GRACE OF GOD and many other emotions, growing up that i'd forgotten and then, what i felt after the attack-this is raw and honest-she is a 'very' unique in the best way woman and writer.
