I bought my son a mig welder for Xmas. I wanted a book that would explain how to weld using the mig handler. Most books I found were dated with very old photos and not much "how to" on mig welding. I returned what I though was the best of the lot and purchased this one. I like it! It's moder, up to date, with good color, step by step illustrations. The one thing missing, in my opinion, is cross-sectional close ups of good and bad welds and their causes of failure.

Really like this book! I'm a total beginner though, so if you are already experienced, this book may be too basic for you. It's well-written and seems like the author is having a conversation with you.

Easy read, good info. Great for the novice. Some stuff was very obvious to me, but Its good that its included for the newb.

Very nice, up to date data, reads well and should do a good job of getting anyone started welding. Targets novices but should be useful for most hobbyists.

I've wanted to get into welding for years and finally Santa got me a welder for Christmas. As with any new tool or toy, I'm looking for this to do with it. This book is a helpful resource on projects and the basics.

Purchased this book for my 15-year-old son. He finds it easy to understand and complete. We can't wait to get the tools and begin to learn!

I got this book for my husband and he's reading it and liking it. He did mention that it's kind of for beginners and he could skip some stuff, but is reading it all. My husband doesn't weld much and we have a friend who welds as a profession - a needed activity for things that go wrong in this remote area of our state.

Great!

Amazon.com Review

Economics is not widely considered to be one of the sexier sciences. The annual Nobel Prize winner in that field never receives as much publicity as his or her compatriots in peace, literature, or physics. But if such slights are based on the notion that economics is dull, or that economists are concerned only with finance itself, Steven D. Levitt will change some minds. In Freakonomics (written with Stephen J. Dubner), Levitt argues that many apparent mysteries of everyday life don't need to be so mysterious: they could be illuminated and made even more fascinating by asking the right questions and drawing connections. For example, Levitt traces the drop in violent crime rates to a drop in violent criminals and, digging further, to the Roe v. Wade decision that preempted the existence of some people who would be born to poverty and hardship. Elsewhere, by analyzing data gathered from inner-city Chicago drug-dealing gangs, Levitt outlines a corporate structure much like McDonald's, where the top bosses make great money while scores of underlings make something below minimum wage. And in a section that may alarm or relieve worried parents, Levitt argues that parenting methods don't really matter much and that a backyard swimming pool is much more dangerous than a gun. These enlightening chapters are separated by effusive passages from Dubner's 2003 profile of Levitt in The New York Times Magazine, which led to the book being written. In a book filled with bold logic, such back-patting veers Freakonomics, however briefly, away from what Levitt actually has to say. Although maybe there's a good economic reason for that too, and we're just not getting it yet. --John Moe

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Forget your image of an economist as a crusty professor worried about fluctuating interest rates: Levitt focuses his attention on more intimate real-world issues, like whether reading to your baby will make her a better student. Recognition by fellow economists as one of the best young minds in his field led to a profile in the New York Times, written by Dubner, and that original article serves as a broad outline for an expanded look at Levitt's search for the hidden incentives behind all sorts of behavior. There isn't really a grand theory of everything here, except perhaps the suggestion that self-styled experts have a vested interest in promoting conventional wisdom even when it's wrong. Instead, Dubner and Levitt deconstruct everything from the organizational structure of drug-dealing gangs to baby-naming patterns. While some chapters might seem frivolous, others touch on more serious issues, including a detailed look at Levitt's controversial linkage between the legalization of abortion and a reduced crime rate two decades later. Underlying all these research subjects is a belief that complex phenomena can be understood if we find the right perspective. Levitt has a knack for making that principle relevant to our daily lives, which could make this book a hit. Malcolm Gladwell blurbs that Levitt "has the most interesting mind in America," an invitation Gladwell's own substantial fan base will find hard to resist. 50-city radio campaign. 3.5 ✨When I first started freakonomics, I could not put the book down, but once I reached approximately 60% you are finished with the book and all you are left with is articles from the author and references. So In fairness, had freakonomics not included all the articles and references, I would have rated it a 4.Some chapters, depending on the information, was more interesting than others. I found the chapter on crime rates dropping due to abortion to be particularly intriguing. They present a valuable side of an argument that I had never pondered. The chapter on how names can affect your success was also very interesting and just learning how they generate that data and how and when the names overlap. Very interesting. All in all, I would recommend this book to all my friends who appreciate random tidbits of information or who have a curiosity towards economics and how it plays a part in random parts of our world.

I’ve heard of this book for years, but never bothered to read it because I was already an economist and didn’t think I needed to read a popular summary of Steven Levitt’s work.[1] My impression was that the book summarized his work in a popular (non-academic) style that helped people understand what economists do. I though that the book was useful in this respect in helping people understand what I do. Indeed, the most common reaction I get from people when telling them that I am an economist is that they have read Freakonomics, which implies that they have at least seen some work similar to what I do at aguanomics.[2]It turns out that I was mistaken in my initial beliefs.I just read this 2004 book 2006 revision, and it's made me think a bit more about how we (economists) communicate with the general public, and I think that some ways are better than others. First, there are textbooks, which describe the tools that economists use to put their theories into practice. Many many people have told me “I didn’t learn anything in economics. All I remember was a lot of math and curves.” This depressing outcome results from lecturers who merely reproduce problems and equations on the blackboard, without helping students understand either why those theories are used or how they came to be so popular with economists.[3] Second, there are books that explain how economists think or how their thinking has evolved as they have tried to understand and summarize the people’s behaviour. These books, in my opinion, are the most interesting — and challenging — because they push people to revisit their assumptions and perspectives.[4] These are the books that I would recommend to people looking to “think like an economist” or, to be blunt, to think more accurately about how they and those around them actually behave. Third, there are books like mine [pdf] that try to explain how to improve failing policies using basic economic insights and incentives. Finally, there are books like Freakonomics that reproduce academic papers in a popular form. These books — like Economic Gangsters — give the public a limited vision of research without explaining the struggles of getting the right data or explaining the limitations of theories that are used (or not) in the final paper.Freakonomics is therefore NOT the book that I would recommend to anyone interested in (a) learning economic theory, (b) learning about how economists think, or (c) understanding the world or thinking of ways to improve it.This book with a memorable (but useless) name provides readers with just-so stories that are good for cocktail conversations but not for understanding economics.[5]For example,Legalized abortion explains the drop in crime in the US. Not only do Steve and Steve back off from the main claims of the original paper (they add other factors), but this theory has been falsified by others (see this and this). What struck me is their ongoing attempts to hold onto at least some elements in the original claim in later blog posts in what I’d call a “my-ladydoth-protest-too-much” manner.Real estate agents serve themselves better than they serve clients when selling their own homes. As a former real estate agent, I had to agree with their basic premise, but I thought their explanation too simplistic.[6] The most obvious problem is that agents have an entirely different understanding of themselves as sellers as well as of the markets. Surely that different information (and the resulting “patience” that gets them a higher price as sellers) matters?Looking over their other chapters (on cheating sumo wrestlers, drug dealers who live with their moms, the KKK as a multilevel marketing organization, etc.), I agree that the chapters are interesting and thought provoking, but they do not provide “lessons on the hidden side of everything.” Instead, they read like a series of magazine articles whose quirky “insights” might contribute to your next cocktail conversation. The authors say that they want you to ask more questions and see the world differently, but what tools have they given to you in this book?[7] I didn’t detect any reliable technique (except perhaps to collect a neat dataset and call Steve Levitt), and that’s where I was disappointed. Freakonomics does not really reveal the hidden side of everything. Indeed, it’s more likely to mislead you into thinking you’ve learned something, when you’ve only learned an interesting angle on a complex topic on which you may lack either the experience or methods needed to put it into a useful context.[8]Take their example of the “underpaid” drug dealer who they say faces a higher risk of death than someone on Death Row in Texas (and thus must be overestimating the gains from their job). Does this statistical analysis mean that those street dealers are irrational? I don’t think so. As all economics students learn, you need to look at their opportunity cost (i.e., the costs and benefits of their potential other choices). In this case, street dealers are (a) NOT condemned to death, (b) not able to find other work with their experience, and (c) not aware of their statistical mortality as much as their potential wealth. Those street runners are “taking their chances” in the same way as Americans are “living the dream,” i.e., in ignorance of reality.[9]Bottom Line: I give this book THREE STARS. Dubner and Levitt present interesting puzzles worthy of cocktail conversation, but they overstate their contributions and accuracy (“numbers don’t lie” but theory can be incomplete or just wrong). I suggest that anyone interested in understanding how economics works and applying those lessons to “the hidden side of everything” read Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt. It’s free to download and provides a really useful perspective that anyone can apply to any topic they care about.[10](1) I’ve met Steven Levitt. He's a fine person and excellent economist, but this book is too “pop” in its oversimplification of his work and hagiographic treatment of his insights. Yes, he brings interesting statistical tools to“freaky” questions, but he’s not a “rogue economist exploring the hidden side of everything.” He’s just a guy with a dataset and empirical theory who finds some strong correlations. As I explain later on, he does not deliver the last word on pretty much any topic in this book. (It's interesting to see the two authors pooh-poohing people's objections to their claims in this revised edition. I get the impression that their answer is "bestseller, bitch!" more than "hmmm..., maybe we claimed too much.") Also see note 8.(2) I wrote on the human right to water and oil and water for their Freakonomics blog.(3) I published an article [pdf] on how students don’t really understand the “downward sloping demand curve” because its form is based on advanced techniques they won’t see for a few more classes (meaning "never" for those who take one class or drop the major).(4) Of those I have reviewed, I recommend Small is Beautiful, the Calculus of Consent, the Company of Strangers, Predictably Irrational, etc.(5) "Freaky" anything sounds bad to me, and "freaky" economics -- unlike most economics -- isn't useful to most people. Even worse, there's nothing freaky to the stories in terms of the economics. I wish the authors had spent more time on the basic economics (making the book a useful learning experience) and less time defending empirical research that is interesting and provocative but not really wise.(6) I corresponded with Levitt’s co-author on my objections to their working paper back in 2005. The main one was that their analysis missed the most important point: it’s better to have an agent than not to have an agent — an obvious insight that saved me about €10,000 when I bought a flat in Amsterdam. Going further, would an agent work harder for you if their commission was a flat rate rather than a percentage of the sales price? They harp about commissions as detrimental to the client’s interest due to the small share of the additional profits an agent gains from working harder on your behalf — e.g., 3% of another $10,000 is only $300, but why would an agent work any harder on a flat-rate commission? In my experience, agents love on referrals from old clients, which may explain why they work hard "despite the weak incentives."(7) My definition of an expert is “someone who knows what’s missing.” As an example of this, I give a fourth reason why it’s NOT irrational to vote (they give three weak reasons in the blog post included in their revised edition), i.e., the benefits to an individual from study and engagement in a topic.(8) My years of experience traveling in 100+ countries leads me to respect the diversity of beliefs and institutions that result in a variety of outcomes. Most academics need to exit the Ivory Tower and hit the road more often.(9) On page 134, they write “The typical parenting expert, like experts in other fields, is prone to sound exceedingly sure of himself. An expert doesn’t so much argue the various sides of an issue as plant his flag firmly on one side. That’s because an expert whose argument reeks of restraint or nuance often doesn’t get much attention.” They need to apply the same critique to themselves. (They cite themselves in later chapters — p139 on abortion and crime — as if their earlier claims were facts.) As another example, take Dubner on page 199, who writes “that paper [on police officer counts and crime] was later disputed… a gradate student found an obvious mathematical mistake in it — but Levitt’s ingenuity was obvious.” I’m not sure I’d say the same about someone whose claims rested on logic with “obvious mathematical mistakes”!(10) Hazlitt says "the art of economics consists in looking not merely at the immediate but at the longer effects of any act or policy; it consists in tracing the consequences of that policy not merely for one group but for all groups," which he summarizes as "...and then what?" That's a good question, and it's how I can easily predict that cheap water prices will lead to failing infrastructure or water shortages, why climate change is arriving "too fast" (due to a lack of carbon taxes), and so on. I'd prefer people to ask "and then what?" more often and spend less time showing off their knowledge of cheating sumo wrestlers.

Very interesting read about everyday statistics and how they explain our motivations. The writers challenge some predictions and show us, with numbers, that what we predict may sometimes be different from what happens in actuality and how people think. It's a good insight into what motivates us into doing or not doing things. It is very well written. I got the audiobook version and it was very entertaining. I even let my kids listen to some parts of it. It's one of those books where you can start at the beginning middle or end and enjoy it every time. I bought a few copies as gifts for my kids' history teacher, math teacher, and language teacher. Also, a gift for my uncle and for one of my friends. Recommended. I think it's better than the following books but they are also entertaining.

I would definitely recommend Freakonomics to any reader looking to learn economics through real current events and hot topics. Levitt uses his teaching and writing styles throughout the book to execute his ideas in an easy to digest way. This book appeals to older kids and young adults because these are the years where we first start to learn about current events and have opinions on political things. Reading this book in a high school econ class was helpful in my opinion and taught me new things I never would have related to the economy. Levitt’s teaching style appeals to most people in my opinion as he uses real examples that are fascinating to readers. When teaching new complicated ideas, it's important to make them easily understandable. Levitt does a good job of writing to all readers, not just certain classes of people. In the following quote from the book, Levitt uses this strategy to teach his point. “An incentive is a bullet, a key: an often tiny object with astonishing power to change a situation.” This quote is beneficial in teaching his lesson because this analogy is helpful in understanding what an incentive is. Most people know what incentives are, but not all, which is why he continues to explain it and does not just assume the reader knows. For many High School students, econ can be hard to understand because the ideas are more abstract, so when Levitt uses examples that are known, it's easier to comprehend the ideas. As far as writing style goes, Levitt does a good job of using complex sentences and words while keeping the writing fairly comprehensive. His audience of people who are econ beginners are easily able to understand the content because he doesn’t dumb down the topics. The following quote showcases his writing abilities as he uses good vocabulary and explanations. "Morality, it could be argued, represents the way that people would like the world to work, whereas economics represents how it actually does work."(Pg.13) He relates a word most people already know to an economic topic to teach the lesson. He teaches new econ vocabulary in an easy to understand way through examples. He keeps his examples serious yet difficult while explaining the econ. He maintains new examples every chapter while still relating them to the last. Using real-life current events also helped to teach the information in a new, academic way. Overall, Levitt did a great job on teaching economy in a fascinating way. Each chapter had a new taste and was captivating to learn about. His examples were new and exciting to read and relate to econ. The combination of complex vocabulary and ideas with his captivating teaching style is what makes Freakonomics a good choice when looking for an educational economy book.

I have a McCulloch in my family tree and I was in hopes of finding a cousin as the author. This book is not for those researching the name but it is perfect for learning the history of the Texas rangers. Although it's small, I found it thorough - had I looked inside a bit more, I might have not purchased it for my family tree research, but I love Civil War history, so I made out just fine. I would have given it all 5 stars had he been my cousin!

This is a guilty pleasure to counter my machismo and I love listening to these songs again.

As compared to his latest album, Melody Road, which the Neil Diamond groupies are all giving five stars just because it's Neil Diamond, this collection is all legitimately five-star Neil Diamond. These are the original recordings of 23 of his best compiled from different collections/albums, from his early stuff (i.e. Kentucky Woman, Sweet Caroline, Solitary Man), to 70s-80s hits (i.e. Song Sung Blue, Forever in Blue Jeans, America, etc.) The listener can do no better in a compilation of great Neil Diamond than this.I bought this after buying his latest album based on the rave reviews found on Amazon, and decided that either I was missing something or that the new stuff just isn't all that phenomenal, and that biased reviewers would give ANYTHING Neil Diamond does five stars. Sorry, folks, but that does people a disservice. A five star review should not just be given away because you think an author/singer/celebrity can do nothing wrong or not up to his/her usual standards. It's supposed to help people either unfamiliar with (not too likely with Neil Diamond, who has been around for 40+ years at least) material make an informed decision. Reviews that say simply "It's great!", "It's the best!", etc. not only are not reviews but are simply applause for someone the "author" of a review wouldn't give a bad review to if it were an album of belches and drum beats. These are essential songs for anyone who wants a Neil Diamond collection, and from his Tin Pan Alley days, to his rocking period (Cherry, Cherry, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show) to his African period (Soolaimon), there's something for everyone. This, then, is an ACTUAL five-star collection that actually deserves the rating.

I didn't plan to write a review of this collection. However, I noticed that some reviewers complained about the sound, and some complained that these are not the original versions. I can't speak for them, but I find the sound to be excellent, and these versions are the ones I always heard through the years on the radio. I felt that I should say that. And, since I am already here and everything, I figure I may as well mention the songs I love the best. "Holly Holy" is the reason I bought this CD. It is more than a song to me. It is a spiritual experience. Others that I love, in the order they are found on the disc, are: "Song Sung Blue", "America", "Love On The Rocks", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" (even without Barbra), "Kentucky Woman", "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon", "Solitary Man", "I'm A Believer" (even without The Monkees), and "Cherry, Cherry". What surprises me about this collection is that out of 23 tracks, I dislike only 2 of them. I really had expected to like only about half of them. One final thing: Neil Diamond's charisma. It has been literally decades since I've heard some of these songs, and I had forgotten just how emotional he gets when he sings. I thought I remembered him as being "light" and "laid back", but now I remember how intense he always was about his music, both writing it and performing it.

Pre Ordered this and got it fast...and at a lower price which the difference was refunded promptly. First Greatest Hits album since reuniting with Capital Records so all of these are original studio releases instead of later versions like on other greatest hit albums. If you love the Original Neil Diamond you will LOVE this one!

For the amount of songs included on this CD, this is a bargain for the money! This is a must for any Neil Diamond fan.Included in this album:1. Cracklin' Rosie2. Forever In Blue Jeans3. Song Sung Blue4. Sweet Caroline5. Holly Holy6. Red, Red Wine7. Hello Again8. Beautiful Noise9. America10. September Morn11. Love On The Rocks12. Shilo13. You Don't Bring Me Flowers (Original Solo Version)14. Morningside15. Soolaimon16. Play Me17. Kentucky Woman18. Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon19. Solitary Man20. I'm A Believer21. Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show22. Cherry Cherry23. I Am...I SaidThis CD encompasses much of Neil Diamond's long and storied singing career. Filled with most of his truly "greatest" hits, you will not be disappointed with this compilation. Buy, enjoy, sit back and recount the good memories of yesteryear.

Simply put, this is the best greatest hits release by Neil Diamond...ever. There have been several supposedly comprehensive releases in the past with 2 CDs worth of music. In fact, I've bought The Essential Neil Diamond and Greatest Hits 1966-1992 only to be disappointed. The problem with the others? Many of the songs are not the studio versions you want to listen to but various live recordings mixed in with the radio versions we are all use to. This deluxe version, on the other hand, contains 42 tracks and has just about every one of Neil's best songs from the original studio recorded albums, not to mention the great digitally remastered quality that you can't get on his classic albums. For only $7 more than the 1 disc version, this collection is a must buy for any Neil Diamond fan.

I loved Legacy of Kings and so I was eagerly anticipating the sequel, Empire of Dust. I absolutely loved the sequel! There is magic, betrayal, murder, attempted murder, a little romance, and a lot of surprises. There were some plot twists that I didn't see coming and I love that! There were also some unanswered questions and I hate that! I need book three stat! One thing I love is how Eleanor Herman weaves a lot of factual history into the story. For example, one of the (minor) characters in this story was Artaxerxes, ruler of Persia, who in his youth, murdered eighty of his brothers to win the throne. Hephaestion and Alexander did actually have a close relationship with one another in real life. Just knowing these little facts makes me appreciate how hard it must have been to weave to together this epic fantasy with historical facts."This is the most enduring and most magnificent thread in literary weavings both old and new—the indestructible bond of our collective history." --Eleanor HermanThis book had me turning the pages to see what happened next. It was very disappointing when I had to put it down to go to bed.Do you love fantasy? Do love history? Do you love historical fiction? You will love this book.I received an arc copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I had a hard time with Legacy of Kings the first in this series, but Empire of Dust was fantastic. I'm going back to reread Legacy of Kings as I think I missed out on what was going on. It's a bit like Game of Thrones - lots of characters in different areas - and I didn't appreciate what was going on in the first book. But now I am anxiously awaiting the next in the series. But I really need to reread that first one!

I loved this sequel to Legacy of Kings! There's so much double crossing and betrayal! The history has been expertly weaved with magical fantasy! I really loved reading from all the different point of views

This is the third and best book in the series IMO. Enjoy the magic, the mystery, and the adventure. Author knows how to weave a story.

Purchased this for someone else who couldn't seem to put it down.

Good book. Good series

Excellent follow up to the first book. Didn’t drag and I finished it really quickly. Can’t wait to read the third one

This book was just as described and arrived quickly.

While I found the map pack for Dungeon of the Mad Mage to be a wonderful GM planning tool, the uses of the Ravnica map pack are less clear. You get doublesided, dry-erase, 8.5"x11" pages representing the 10th district and its associated precincts (and information about those precincts on the back of the pages), one map each for each of the 10 iconic guild locations included in the boo (with information about them on the back,) and perforated cards for the guild charms you can give to your players. You also get one map for the short adventure included in the Ravnica book. Since Guildmasters Guide to Ravnica is a campaign setting sourcebook and not an adventure in itself, the maps may or may not be useful to you as you run your own Ravnica-inspired campaign. It's unlikely, for instance, that you'll have players visiting each of the guild locations. Those location maps include an unlabeled player map on one side, and a smaller, labeled GM map on the other, with information about the location and a table you can use for inspiration about adventures you can run using that location. This is an odd decision on a number of levels. The player side will have to be photocopied and enlarged to be usable as a battlemap, and that's clearly the intent with that side of the page. Since each map is drawn to a slightly different scale, you can't even necessarily blow them up using the same proportions. The GM side of the map is fine, but if you're using it, it means that you should have some idea about why the players are visiting that location, so you wouldn't need a table to generate reasons for them to visit. The precinct maps are fine and lovely, but I don't know if there's any benefit to having them on a dry erase page rather than just having them in the book or on DnDBeyond. They aren't gridded, so you won't necessarily use them to plan battles where a dry erase page can be used to track enemy and trap locations. The charm cards are great. They include beautiful, stylistic guild-specific, character art on one side. This art is not from the book as far as I can tell. The other side has the charm information. You get two copies of most of the 10 charms (18 charm cards total). Each card has unique character art even if the charm itself is duplicated on two cards. It's worth noting that the charms are not in "card format" in the book, so this is a unique presentation of that material.Overall, this product probably wasn't necessary, and will likely have a very narrow audience of GMs who can make use of most of the material contained within it. Going forward, these map packs are best for full adventures (like Dungeon of the Mad Mage) where enemy, trap, and secret tracking in various "dungeons" is emphasized.

Sadly this just had pages from the book. It's nice for player handouts but it doesn't have anything interesting that the book doesn't already provide.

As someone that uses a messenger chat group to post maps for the group im always having to block our or filter out words that detail what the room has rather than just the dimensions which is what i want my players to focus on. So on one side it is very handy to have that. However i did expect a lot more than just the maps that were in the book I expected some more places in the tenth district, im going to have to make a ton of buildings...

The suz of the smaller maps aren't correctly sized for use on a table during combat so you'll have to photocopy them and blow them up to scale. There really aren't a whole lot of useful things in here that shouldn't have already come with the core book. The artwork for the city maps are beautiful and quite detailed. The smaller building maps are, frankly, unacceptable. Because the size of the maps are so small, they can't actually be used during combat in a DnD adventure. The charms are a good edition to the game setting and many of them are useful in a variety of ways, allowing you to cast spells you might otherwise not have.Whoever delivered the package to my apartment did a bang-up job trying to fit it into my mailbox. I opened the package to find the outside cover/folder bent and creased in several spots. I'm not happy with this as the act of delivering the package has now taken several years of use out of this product. I predict the folder will start falling apart even faster now that it's been artificially aged more than a year due to careless delivery.

This is an excellent addition to the recent D&D release for Ravnica, giving the complete maps of the locales listed in the hardback supplement. My group is very excited to play in this expansion, since many of us are M:tG players and are very familiar with the lore presented. But Amazon saw fit in shipping a light product, akin to a magazine, in a soft pouch shipper, resulting in the item being bent/creased through in-route handling. Amazon Fulfillment needs to review their packaging guidelines.

Meh... can’t use with miniatures...

Wonderful set of maps for the realm of Ravnica, helps with play in Ravnica

This item was exactly as described. No complaints. Thank you!

Wow wow wow. This book is jam-packed full of ideas for how to successfully start doing house concerts. You really don't have to know anything about how this works first, Shannon takes you step-by-step through the entire process in easy-to-understand language, and you know it works because she's been hugely successful at it. I'm starting in my own state and I've already got three concerts on my calendar with more people interested. This isn't just theory, it's a real, tested how-to manual. If you want a quick, entertaining read with no fluff where basically every sentence is highly actionable, get this book! I cannot wait to get started.

The methods and advice in this book absolutely work. There is no smoke and mirrors or the typical consultant upselling that you sometimes find with books that claim so much in the title. We host and help other hosts with their house shows and after we started following Shannon's methods the experience went to a whole new level. The musicians make way more money and have more engaged fans than any other approach and the hosts are so much happier with the process. I've recommended this to all the musicians I work with and they haven't been disappointed. I wish all the musicians we've hosted would have read this book.

What a revolutionary book! I love the concept, and I love even more that the author herself has done house concerts, not just once but several times with success. I love how this gives hope to the everyday musician who may be struggling to make a living. This should be a major eye-opener for them. I know it was for me. I am definitely going to be trying the whole house concert thing next summer. Thank you Shannon Curtis for paving the way with house concerts! Anyone reading this should know that Shannon is legit. I have even listened to some podcasts with her being interviewed about this topic. Very enlightening indeed. Any singer-songwriters out there who are reading this? Here is a wonderful opportunity to perform in an intimate setting, and making good money doing what you love. How can you go wrong? Kudos again to author Shannon Curtis! Shannon, I love your songs as well. No wonder your house concerts continue to go viral! :) Keep up the great work! I'll let you know how it goes for me when I do my own house concerts next summer.

Although I have yet to do a house concert, it is something that I have been thinking about. This book has inspired me to move ahead and begin planning a house concert tour. The author gives a lot of information in this small book, and the fact that she has done this successfully herself inspires me to give it a try. From finding a host to what equipment you will need she offers proven advice. If you are a musician in need of more income (ha) and want to spread your name around, house concerts could be the key to achieving those goals.

Shannon Curtis clarifies a number of points, based on her own experience, in summing up the do's and don't's of home concert performing. In an age when even the bar gigs may not generate enough revenue for artist survival, the option of performing for an audience in a listening environment is an excellent way for a performer to "get out there." Additionally, she takes a lot of the mystery from the procedure by pointing out what has worked, as well as what hasn't. The subtle points are probably the most valuable, simply because they are points generally not even considered by the average performer, let alone someone who wishes to host a show!Thank you to Shannon Curtis for sharing her experiences in a practical guide to in house concert performing!

Shannon has captured the essence of the house concert touring model in this compact book. She's packed it with been there-tried that-tweaked that and now you can do it too insights and how-to's. Shannon mixes business savvy with her artist's heart and soul and I loved that. She walks you through her income numbers from one year to the next showing you how to maximize everything from gig income (donations) to merchandise sales to increasing the number of house concerts from one year to the next. She's got the systems down pat from the first email "ask" letter to your potential hosts to sending the after show thank you note. If you want to start a viable performing career and are finding it to hard to get your foot in the door at all those mainstream venues, then check out Shannon Curtis' book. It's smart, concise, heart-centered, entrepreneurial, accessible, thoughtful and easy for any artist to put to use immediately to start building your community with house concerts. She's figured out quite a bit, and yet leaves room for nuances yet to come, methods you can incorporate that work for you. Finding your own niche, tapping your own family, friends and audience takes you out of the mainstream booking frenzy and puts you in charge of your own touring destiny. Use this book to refine your house concert strategies, then get out and tour.

Shannon Curtis's husband (and co-author) and I worked together in nightclubs many years ago and he's about as solid a dude as they come. Shannon is a great singer and if you ever get a chance, make sure you see her live. This book is packed with great advice from two people who are living legit artist's lives and supporting themselves. It;s obviously geared towards musicians, but I think any entrepreneur or freelancer who works creatively could find a few nuggets of wisdom in here. I work in social media and advertising now and I think the parts of the book that deal with promotion could easily be adapted to small business stuff or event planning.

I have not yet ready read the entire book from start to finish, but I can tell its laid out well. Shannon lays out how to successively play outdoor concerts with little to no hassle at all. If problems do arise, Shannon explains how to overcome and or resolve them. This book is definitely going to be a keeper for a long time. When I don't want to gig and make good faster money, I know Shannon can help me.
