I love this book! It's use of colors, illustrations, and caricatured chess-piece personalities make this book very inviting for children and adult readers. Reading two fun pages gets chess players one step closer to winning, and feeling like it's all about fun, rather than cut-throat competition (though maybe, with application of all these lessons, a sweet chess-kid might be cut-throat without even knowing it :). I'm not a how-to book type of reader, but the colors and gumby-like chess pieces reeled me in.

The Baron Antoine Henri de Jomini's "The Art of War" is an early classic on military strategy and tactics. With von Clausewitz, he was one of the more widely read scholars on the subject in the 19th century. His book tends to have an abstract, scholarly air to it that suggests that he was more of an "arm chair" theorist than a man whom he learned much from--Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon may have had general perspectives on warfare, but he was also someone who was able to be improvisational on the battlefield, and Jomini cannot quite capture that in this work. Nonetheless, a classic.Charles Messenger's Introduction does single out Jomini for mention, when he notes (Page v): "Nineteenth -century military thought was dominated by two men, one a German and the other a Swiss. . . . They were von Clausewitz and Jomini." Jomini argued that (Page vii): "Strategy decodes where to act; logistics brings the troops to this point; grand tactics determines the manner of execution and the employment of the troops."As Jomini's actual work begins, he identifies the six key components of the art of war (Page 2):"1. Statesmanship in its relation to war.2. Strategy, or the art of properly directing masses upon the theater of war, either for defense or for invasion.3. Grant tactics.4. Logistics, or the art of moving armies.5. Engineering--the attack and defense of fortifications.6. Minor tactics."The book itself, then, considers these elements of the art of war. No need to go into great detail. But some general points are in order. At one point, he emphasizes the importance of "lines"--interior lines, where one side has a more compact line and can move troops from one point to another with greater facility than the enemy; exterior lines, which are longer. If a smaller force, interior lines are critical; if a larger force, exterior lines may prove no impediment to success.One facet of this book is his diagrams depicting various orders of attack (pages 188 and following). This tends, as noted earlier, to be pretty abstract. One hesitates to think that officers in the heat of combat will intellectually assess the various orders of attack and rationally choose one over another. Among these are straight linear orders (where the two forces approach one another in straight lines) to "en echelon" attacks, where the lines are arrayed in depth.He notes in his conclusion that (Page 321) "War in its ensemble in not a science, but an art."So, if one might be interested in an analysis of military strategy and tactics from the early part of the 19th century, this is not a bad starting point. It is a classic on the subject, and, even if too abstract and academic, can be a useful book to understand the military in that era.

This is a great edition of a classic work. Sun Tzu is read by a lot of different people for a lot of different reasons. I frankly detest the idea of reading this for the purposes of excelling in interoffice politics or as a means of defeating your business competition. It is a military manual and ideally will be read as a way of understanding ancient Chinese military strategy. It is a wonderful guide for understanding the nature of warfare and for how modern combat resembles or differs from the combat of two millennia ago. Regardless of one's motives for reading this, it is a fascinating work and Sun Tzu an equally fascinating writer. He means to lay out practical rules that will assist you - assuming that you are the leader of an army - in formulating sound strategy and in avoiding unforced errors. He writes about, for instance, the nine different kinds of campaigns and the different approaches demanded by each. On light terrain, for instance, you should travel quickly, but on rough terrain, you should engage in plunder. Why? Well, the great virtue of light terrain - i.e., terrain that it is easy to travel on - is the ease of travel. Therefore, move quickly while you can. Difficult terrain will keep you from traveling quickly; you therefore should scramble for all of the food and necessities that you can find, because you are not going to make good time and you could easily run out of food. Most of the book consists of pithy little reflections like that. Most are intensely commonsensical, even if they are not something you would instantly grasp.The book, as with all Everyman's Classics, features great front matter. As with all such books, you get a list of recommended reading materials and a Chronology. You also get a list of ancient Chinese dynasties. There is an introduction by the book's translator and a foreword by US General David H. Petraeus, whose name will be familiar to anyone who has followed the news the past decade. The Eleven Traditional Commentaries is included at the back and there are a number of notes by the translator to ease the understanding of the text. All in all, this is one of the best editions of the work that I have seen, equaled only by the Oxford University Press edition, which previously was the sole first rate non-business edition.This edition is part of a somewhat new tradition on the part of Everyman's Library. For a long time Everyman's primarily reprinted translations that were either in the public domain or whose copyright was held by Random House. This meant that most translations came from the nineteenth century. More recently, however, Everyman's has been doing original translations with all original front matter and back matter. As a result, their volumes have begun to take on a degree of scholarly relevance that they didn't previously possess. This tremendously enhances the value of a line of publications that has already been among my favorites. Let me put it bluntly: if Everyman's publishes an edition of a book, that is almost always the edition I would prefer to read. For example, while there are annotated editions of Jane Austen that I prefer to read if I'm trying to glean every possible bit of meaning from the text, if I just want to enjoy PRIDE AND PREJUDICE as a narrative, as a text, then you can't beat Everyman's Library. There is definitely no series of books that are more pleasant to read. The paper is gorgeous: a rich, heavy stock paper that is yellow and does not reflect light, which makes reading easy on the eye. And I love the cloth used to wrap each cover, pale olive green in this case, with a lovely dustjacket with a representation of Sun Tzu on the front. Just very close to the perfect book. I also own a lot of Library of America volumes and I never like reading those volumes like I enjoy reading an Everyman's Library.In short, there are, in my opinion two editions of Sun Tzu worth owning, this one and the edition by Oxford. But I think that this one might get the nod, given that it is more recent, more attractive, and better produced.

So far, of the YA play anthologies I've bought (and I've purchased a number) this is one of my favorites. This is well-written YA lit. The other reviewer who hazards a comparison to Shakespeare is a bit daft. I couldn't teach Shakespeare to my freshmen - that requires a level of literacy they don't yet have.Also, these plays are expressly written for teens so I don't think it's fair to denigrate them because they don't stand up to Shakespeare's lofty standard. The plays are pretty good YA stuff. Several of them even received ALA awards.I teach low literacy students. It practically teaches itself.There are some clunkers, too (the Walter Dean Meyers piece plays out like a poor man's Sartre), but there's enough good stuff to overlook them. Also, most of the plays are just about the right length (20-30 pages) for my purposes and stay relatively consistent at that length.Honestly, I think "The Driver's Test" alone is worth the price of the book. Recommended for teens and teachers.

The plays in this collection attempt to tackle issues important to teens and end up sounding like badly written tv screenplays where everything is "deep" but resolved way too quickly. The dialogue is unrealistic and the characters shallow. I can't see handing any of these scripts out to high school students, expecting them to take the plays seriously.

Amazing! Inspiring! Has inspired me to do something with my "20 something" dreams ... which were 30 years ago ... but it's never too late to start! Although now I have a beautiful family who are growing up so fast, there is something missing in my life. Well, now I want to do the same for children around the world ... who are facing such incredible challenges for what we take for granted. Reading Adam's story has given me the push I needed to find my passion in life ... to sincerely help anyone that I can help. I am grateful that Adam has taken the time to write this amazing story on how he started PoP ... I truly felt like I was with him every step of the way. Great story teller! I'm going to be buying a copy for my children as they graduate high school ... it's that good!

The Promise of a Pencil was actually a really incredible book to read. Adam Braun writes it in a way that really focuses on his development and his reactions or feelings in situations which helps you connect with him and his story. It is interesting because it follows the creation and development of his non-profit organization Pencils of Promise and gives great insight on how to build a successful non-profit and yet while you're reading you feel like you are reading a story. By that I mean- you feel like you are simply reading about Adam's life rather than a How-To. As I said The Promise of a Pencil gives great insight on how to build a successful non-profit because Adam Braun doesn't simply focus on his call to help people. He focuses on fundraising, building a board, making connections, etc- all of the business and finance things that are glossed over in other books that I have read. He really focuses on the reality of building a non-profit. I have only one negative thing to say about this book and it should definitely NOT stop anyone from buying this book but while reading this book I kept thinking to myself that he seemed extremely self-absorbed- the situations he was in were always about his thoughts, his feelings, his reaction and I kept wanting him to place himself in their shoes or comment on their pain. I kept reading and I am so glad that I did. I think it was written like this to show the massive changes that he undergoes and because this is a book about a guy who didn't ever think he would start a non-profit. It is about his story, his development into the man who created an incredible non-profit which makes education possible for even the most impoverished.Whether you want to open a non-profit yourself or you are just interested in philanthropy- this is a book I would recommend for everyone.

I recently attended a presentation by Adam Braun at my daughter's university in Walla Walla, Washington, and I tried so hard to hold back my tears of joy. I truly believe that it was providential for my daughter, Ivory Vogt, and I to finally meet him Adam Braun in person. For you see, my daughter started working last September to help put refugee children in Rwanda into schools in their country and around that same time I found Adam's book at the Seattle airport. Adam is a God-sent! I read his book "The Promise of a Pencil" while I was traveling halfway around the world from Seattle, Washington, all the way to Koror, Palau, and I found myself finishing the book within just hours. The book is well-written and it is full of wisdom and inspiration. I called my daughter, Ivory, via Skype from Taipei International Airport to share with her about how amazing and inspirational Adam Braun's book "The Promise of a Pencil" is and I encouraged her to get it right away and read it, then share the good news with all her friends around the world and also her colleagues at Walla Walla University. For young people especially, who are searching for purpose and meaning in life, Adam Braun's life story is a powerful testimony that when you follow your heart and allow the universe to speak to you through all of your keen observations and meaningful relationships with people you meet around the world - you can divinely find answers to your life's biggest questions. While some may debate whether Braun was an "ordinary person," this should not take away from the power of his story. Throughout his journey, Braun is goal-oriented, reflective, and genuine. He is definitely a person I would like to meet someday. Near the end of the book he states, "Purpose is found when you stop thinking about how you exist in the world and start trying to figure out why you are here. Once you solve that question, everything else will fall into place." Braun's narrative highlights how he found his purpose and made a difference.

First of all, let's be honest and not mislead the general reader - this book covers a lot of highly advanced math. The author, Edward Frenkel, likely does as well as anyone could to outline the math in a way that a non-specialist audience can usefully grasp if they put in considerable effort and re-reading, but even then the reader needs to be comfortable with math at least at the undergrad level (calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, etc.). Don't expect to really 'understand' what Frenkel is talking about unless you have considerably greater math background, say grad school level and prior familiarity with the particular areas of math Frenkel covers.Being an engineer, I fall into the former category and came to this book already loving math, and I found the math in this book to often be quite tough going (especially in the second half of the book), though I did get a rough sense of what he was talking about (and I followed the advice to keep going in the tougher parts rather than getting bogged down). True, I could re-read the whole book to get a better understanding, but realistically it would make more sense to bone up on the prerequisite math using other books and then return to this book in a few years (yes, that long). Because I feel that the accessibility of this book for the general reader has been overstated by the book's endorsers and overestimated by the author, I'm deducting a star.That said, I did enjoy this book greatly and am glad that I read it. Besides the exposure to high-level math and the associated research and discovery process (at both the individual and collaborative levels), I found this window into Russian culture fascinating, and frankly I was rather surprised to see that the culture matches many of the stereotypes quite well (Frenkel relates many memorable stories in this regard). I was also inspired to see Frenkel's passion for math, his perseverance against serious adversity, and his resulting remarkable achievements, which he describes with considerable humility, all things considered. In that regard, I was also awed, yet again, to see the reach of some human minds (alas, not mine!) into the wondrous parallel universe of Platonic objective truth which we call 'mathematics' (or more precisely, perhaps we should give a different name to that universe, since 'mathematics' only reflects what we've discovered and mapped so far).Summing up, I can definitely recommend this book to anyone who already loves math and has decent mathematical 'maturity' in the sense of being able to handle math at a relatively abstract level. Those who don't have at least that background could mostly skip the math in the book and instead focus on the memoir aspect. Whether that would be worthwhile depends on the specific interests of the reader, and I only can say that I and apparently many other readers greatly enjoyed that aspect.

Although this book is readable by most, even a math major will only follow the Mathematical content to a certain extent. While Frenkel does a nice job of explaining how it all works together, I imagine the technical explanations will bog down the average reader. Also, Frenkel often toots his own horn which I imagine was difficult not to hold back on after doing cutting edge mathematics. At the same time, his intro about Math in Russia in the 1900’s was enough to make me want to finish the book out. I must admit that the last chapter or two was somewhat difficult to finish. I guess that I’m glad I read it, but I will not be reading it again.

You can clearly tell that the author loves mathematics, it jumps out at you as you read the book - the enthusiasm and excitement is clear in each page. At times, the excitement is so great that the mathematical terms and concepts jump off the page and the author seems to get lost in his thoughts. At those times, the reader can get lost also - lost in math, as the concepts are so hard to follow that reading them two or three times doesn't help. After these binges by the author, he tends to somewhat apologize that the reader's head may be spinning.But to me, as I love math also, even these pages are interesting. The mathematical terms, Lie Groups, automorphic functions, Riemann surfaces, etc. are another exciting world that I will never fully understand but can read in books like this one and get a level of some of the enthusiasm that I felt as a math major in college, prior to entering the business world.I agree, however, that the average reader may be turned off by all of this, and possibly not finish the book. However, if you have a love of math, either current, or dormant and want to revitalize it, then pick up and read this book. You will probably enjoy it like I did.

Edward has done an amazing thing - he has translated the concepts of advanced mathematics into an every day language that, with a little reflection, makes deeply difficult concepts readily accessible to the interested reader. Edward shows us that mathematics is not at all the solving equations that we did in school, but rather a whole world of deeply creative ideas that enables us to better understand our world.As someone deeply passionate about mathematics, but having very little talent, this book was able to open very many doors of understanding for me that previously were closed.The mathematics in here is not conceptually dumbed down and readers should expect to think and reflect to get the full value from the book.Stylistically the book alternates often between an autobiographical chapter and then a beautiful exposition of the mathematics Edward was studying. I disagree entirely with reviewers who have said the book is too autobiographical or that it is self-congratulatory. It is very clearly a passionate and cheerful exposition of Edward's favorite mathematics, which is balanced beautifully with his fascinating and interesting autobiography as a mathematician.There are many ways to read this book and benefit - however I find that because the mathematics he is discussing is so advanced, it will probably appeal most to people who are interested or intrigued with mathematics (and quantum physics). It will help mathematicians explain their concepts in simpler language, and help lay people understand part of why mathematics is so beautiful and powerful.The topics include group theory, knot theory, analysis, number theory, sheaf theory, abstract algebra, gauge theory, and the laglands program which ties many of these ideas together.While the book succeeds in presenting extremely advanced mathematical ideas in very simple language, any passionate reader should read the book multiple times to truly absorb the concepts and see the connections at a deeper level.For a comparison - The book is nowhere near as challenging, rigorous, or complicated as roger penrose's road to reality. At the same time, it is more conceptually focused than ian stewart's books. It is more rigorous than Steven Stroglat'z 'joy of x' - All of these characteristics form its strength - I will happily recommend this book to anyone interested in mathematics or wanting to understand quantum physics better.
