Amazing! Inspiring! Has inspired me to do something with my "20 something" dreams ... which were 30 years ago ... but it's never too late to start! Although now I have a beautiful family who are growing up so fast, there is something missing in my life. I truly believe it is my desire to help people .. it has always been a part of my life but it has been directed towards my own children and their schools. Well, now I want to do the same for children around the world ... who are facing such incredible challenges for what we take for granted. Reading Adam's story has given me the push I needed to find my passion in life ... to sincerely help anyone that I can help. I am grateful that Adam has taken the time to write this amazing story on how he started PoP ... I truly felt like I was with him every step of the way. Great story teller! I'm going to be buying a copy for my children as they graduate high school ... it's that good!

The Promise of a Pencil was actually a really incredible book to read. Adam Braun writes it in a way that really focuses on his development and his reactions or feelings in situations which helps you connect with him and his story. It is interesting because it follows the creation and development of his non-profit organization Pencils of Promise and gives great insight on how to build a successful non-profit and yet while you're reading you feel like you are reading a story. By that I mean- you feel like you are simply reading about Adam's life rather than a How-To. As I said The Promise of a Pencil gives great insight on how to build a successful non-profit because Adam Braun doesn't simply focus on his call to help people. He focuses on fundraising, building a board, making connections, etc- all of the business and finance things that are glossed over in other books that I have read. He really focuses on the reality of building a non-profit. I have only one negative thing to say about this book and it should definitely NOT stop anyone from buying this book but while reading this book I kept thinking to myself that he seemed extremely self-absorbed- the situations he was in were always about his thoughts, his feelings, his reaction and I kept wanting him to place himself in their shoes or comment on their pain. I kept reading and I am so glad that I did. I think it was written like this to show the massive changes that he undergoes and because this is a book about a guy who didn't ever think he would start a non-profit. It is about his story, his development into the man who created an incredible non-profit which makes education possible for even the most impoverished.Whether you want to open a non-profit yourself or you are just interested in philanthropy- this is a book I would recommend for everyone.

I recently attended a presentation by Adam Braun at my daughter's university in Walla Walla, Washington, and I tried so hard to hold back my tears of joy. I truly believe that it was providential for my daughter, Ivory Vogt, and I to finally meet him Adam Braun in person. For you see, my daughter started working last September to help put refugee children in Rwanda into schools in their country and around that same time I found Adam's book at the Seattle airport. Adam is a God-sent! I read his book "The Promise of a Pencil" while I was traveling halfway around the world from Seattle, Washington, all the way to Koror, Palau, and I found myself finishing the book within just hours. The book is well-written and it is full of wisdom and inspiration. I called my daughter, Ivory, via Skype from Taipei International Airport to share with her about how amazing and inspirational Adam Braun's book "The Promise of a Pencil" is and I encouraged her to get it right away and read it, then share the good news with all her friends around the world and also her colleagues at Walla Walla University. For young people especially, who are searching for purpose and meaning in life, Adam Braun's life story is a powerful testimony that when you follow your heart and allow the universe to speak to you through all of your keen observations and meaningful relationships with people you meet around the world - you can divinely find answers to your life's biggest questions. While some may debate whether Braun was an "ordinary person," this should not take away from the power of his story. Organized by mantras, Braun's narrative unfolds as he shares the lessons he learned along the way. The reader cannot help but be inspired by Brown's words and actions. Throughout his journey, Braun is goal-oriented, reflective, and genuine. He is definitely a person I would like to meet someday. Near the end of the book he states, "Purpose is found when you stop thinking about how you exist in the world and start trying to figure out why you are here. Once you solve that question, everything else will fall into place." Braun's narrative highlights how he found his purpose and made a difference.

First of all, let's be honest and not mislead the general reader - this book covers a lot of highly advanced math. The author, Edward Frenkel, likely does as well as anyone could to outline the math in a way that a non-specialist audience can usefully grasp if they put in considerable effort and re-reading, but even then the reader needs to be comfortable with math at least at the undergrad level (calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, etc.). Don't expect to really 'understand' what Frenkel is talking about unless you have considerably greater math background, say grad school level and prior familiarity with the particular areas of math Frenkel covers.Being an engineer, I fall into the former category and came to this book already loving math, and I found the math in this book to often be quite tough going (especially in the second half of the book), though I did get a rough sense of what he was talking about (and I followed the advice to keep going in the tougher parts rather than getting bogged down). True, I could re-read the whole book to get a better understanding, but realistically it would make more sense to bone up on the prerequisite math using other books and then return to this book in a few years (yes, that long). Because I feel that the accessibility of this book for the general reader has been overstated by the book's endorsers and overestimated by the author, I'm deducting a star.That said, I did enjoy this book greatly and am glad that I read it. Besides the exposure to high-level math and the associated research and discovery process (at both the individual and collaborative levels), I found this window into Russian culture fascinating, and frankly I was rather surprised to see that the culture matches many of the stereotypes quite well (Frenkel relates many memorable stories in this regard). I was also inspired to see Frenkel's passion for math, his perseverance against serious adversity, and his resulting remarkable achievements, which he describes with considerable humility, all things considered. In that regard, I was also awed, yet again, to see the reach of some human minds (alas, not mine!) into the wondrous parallel universe of Platonic objective truth which we call 'mathematics' (or more precisely, perhaps we should give a different name to that universe, since 'mathematics' only reflects what we've discovered and mapped so far).Summing up, I can definitely recommend this book to anyone who already loves math and has decent mathematical 'maturity' in the sense of being able to handle math at a relatively abstract level. Those who don't have at least that background could mostly skip the math in the book and instead focus on the memoir aspect. Whether that would be worthwhile depends on the specific interests of the reader, and I only can say that I and apparently many other readers greatly enjoyed that aspect.

Although this book is readable by most, even a math major will only follow the Mathematical content to a certain extent. While Frenkel does a nice job of explaining how it all works together, I imagine the technical explanations will bog down the average reader. Also, Frenkel often toots his own horn which I imagine was difficult not to hold back on after doing cutting edge mathematics. At the same time, his intro about Math in Russia in the 1900’s was enough to make me want to finish the book out. I must admit that the last chapter or two was somewhat difficult to finish. I guess that I’m glad I read it, but I will not be reading it again.

You can clearly tell that the author loves mathematics, it jumps out at you as you read the book - the enthusiasm and excitement is clear in each page. At times, the excitement is so great that the mathematical terms and concepts jump off the page and the author seems to get lost in his thoughts. At those times, the reader can get lost also - lost in math, as the concepts are so hard to follow that reading them two or three times doesn't help. After these binges by the author, he tends to somewhat apologize that the reader's head may be spinning.But to me, as I love math also, even these pages are interesting. The mathematical terms, Lie Groups, automorphic functions, Riemann surfaces, etc. are another exciting world that I will never fully understand but can read in books like this one and get a level of some of the enthusiasm that I felt as a math major in college, prior to entering the business world.I agree, however, that the average reader may be turned off by all of this, and possibly not finish the book. However, if you have a love of math, either current, or dormant and want to revitalize it, then pick up and read this book. You will probably enjoy it like I did.

Edward has done an amazing thing - he has translated the concepts of advanced mathematics into an every day language that, with a little reflection, makes deeply difficult concepts readily accessible to the interested reader. My kids go to a school that’s a part time traditional classroom (2x a week) and homeschool (3x a week). This is one of the options they use and I found that I like it a lot. I don’t always like the schools options and tend to use my own books but this one is good.

This book is very easy to comprehend and excellent for teaching your young ones. I also loved the fact that it includes the answers to the questions

I ordered this book as a resource to use in my Guided Reading groups with my 8th graders. I have looked through it and it is exactly what I have been looking for! I love how it has a pretest and a posttest. It also covers excerpts from commonly known literature excerpts. The fictional and nonfiction stories / articles also have activity pages to help reinforce the concept. The reading comprehension/literary analysis skills chart is also very helpful. I highly recommend this book!

This is one of the best reading comprehension activities you can buy. The lessons teach the child what to look for in a reading selection while training them to analyze the logic behind their answers (with supporting detail). The Reading Detective series are great for boosting standardized test scores. The only drawback to this product is the prohibitive cost.

I don't know, but I'm about to do my part to correct this gross injustice.For starters, check out what Wikipedia has to say for Chas Walking:On the overall series, the Costa Prize Judges said that they were "convinced that this is a major achievement in the making," while the Guardian stated that "I would press Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking trilogy urgently on anyone, anyone at all. It is extraordinary." In their review of the final book, Publisher's Weekly called the series "one of the most important works of young adult science fiction in recent years." Robert Dunbar wrote in The Guardian that the series "will almost certainly come to be seen as one of the outstanding literary achievements of the present century, whether viewed as fiction for the young or for a wider readership."The Knife of Never Letting Go was received with near universal praise for its originality and narration from critics such as Ian Chipman from Booklist and Megan Honig from The School Library Journal. Also the books are full of stream of consciousness sentences that would earn you an "F" if you tried to use them in English class. But it's intentional. The author's use of words adds to the feeling of the story and endures you to the characters.And speaking of the characters . . .The characters in Chaos Walking are some of the best I've ever read. Every character--from Todd and Viola even down to the horses they ride--is powerful and flawed and full of meaning. Todd, Viola, the Mayor are the major players, but there are no minor players. Everyone is important. Many times I'll describe a book as "character driven" or "plot driven." These books are both--enduring characters living through a powerful story.And speaking of the story . . .I typically don't like 1st person narration because it's so hard to get it right. The Chaos Walking Trilogy is written entirely 1st person--and it couldn't be any other way. It's what makes the story work, and I'm extremely impressed. Todd narrates the first book, Todd and Viola narrate the second, and the third book is narrated by Todd and Viola and one other special guest who I don't think I'll divulge . . . but just know that it works great.And speaking of great . . .Read Chaos Walking.For you parents out there, here's what else you need to know. Chaos Walking has the same level of violence and death as that other trilogy. Also, there is some PG-13 language. I rate all three books 16+.

The Ask and the Answer is a little bit different than The Knife of Never Letting Go...The story pretty much starts where The Knife's cliffy lets us hanging... Viola's life hanging in the balance and Todd facing down evil Mayor Prentiss with no hope in sight. But in part 2 of Chaos Walking, Viola and Todd become separated, and so the story is told from two perspectives. His and hers.Through Todd we learn Haven surrendered to Mayor Prentiss, who then changed Haven's name to New Prentisstown and declared himself President of the New World. Mayor Prentiss is a sick twist, no doubt about it, and he didn't waste time learning that the best way to keep Todd in line is by holding Viola hostage. Todd is sent to work, under Davy Prentiss Jr's supervision, as a slave-driver, keeping the Spackle prisoners clearing the land.Through Viola, we meet the healers, and a new character by the name of Mistress Coyle. Mistress Coyle tries to develop a relationship with Viola, asking her questions about the new settlers coming in, and pumping for information about the invading army, and trying to get Viola to understand that the decision to surrender was not a unanimous one. Unfortunately for Viola, it takes her too long to figure out Mistress Coyle isn't the beacon of hope she promises to be.As a cold war turns red hot, Chaos Walking dives deeper into darker themes. Men and Women are separated by thought in book 1, but in book 2 they're separated by opinion, by walls, by curfews. And as President Prentiss's dictatorship thrives, he takes the Spackle servants of Haven and turns them into chattel. As President Prentiss begins to settle into his new role, revolutionaries flee, organize, and fight back; people get caught in the cross fire and terror spreads... Bringing the thin line that separates terrorism and revolution under stress.I loved getting a closer look at Davy Prentiss Jr,. In book 1, he depicted as being as awful as his father and in book 2 we get to see why that is. First he's raised by a sociopath, then he's cast in the role of forever trying and failing to achieve his father's love... And as the new president tries to keep his new government together, the more it becomes blatantly obvious that blood's got little to do with family.Todd and Viola are put under increasing pressure to conform and behave, so the other may live, so they might someday reunite... Even as they hold their survival first, they begin to recognize the cost of choosing sides in a war... The cost of lives of those stuck in the middle.And just as the story is becomes overloaded with moral and emotional dilemmas, just as a full scale war for possession of the New World begins-- Another cliffhanger ending.The only reason this story missed out on another five star rating: I felt the author became inconsistent with Todd's narration. he only remembered once in awhile that Todd couldn't spell big words...Although that may have been an attempt at removing the last of the humor and evolving the story into more serious material... I was also a little peeved at another cliffhanger.

It is rare for a book to leave me so awestruck. This is the tale of Todd and Viola’s adventures on a newly settled planet where hearing the thoughts of men and animals is a constant plague. These settlers, like those who fill our own history, were seeking something better that freed them from the plagues of men only to find those plagues alive and well within their own natures if left unchecked. The messages are multi-layered, deep and incredibly insightful. Discovering what it truly takes to be a responsible adult. The writing is brilliant. The action never drops. I would recommend this series to everyone.

As an Ecumenical Minister, I honor all religions and spiritual traditions and each person's right to find his or her own way in these matters. Performing weddings is one of my favorite ways to minister, for it keeps me constantly in touch with the remarkable power of love in our lives. I have performed hundreds of wedding ceremonies and have run into just about every eventuality, from a flower girl who was afraid of hurting the flowers by pulling off their petals, to a bilingual ceremony with sign language. Whether you have children from a previous marriage to include in the ceremony, sensitive parental attitudes, or some other concern, it can be addressed in your ceremony with grace and sensitivity. The decision of two people to live in a committed relationship is one of the most beautiful things that can happen in life, and I find their choice to be united in marriage a sacred and joyous cause for celebration. We must not be the intended audience for this book, because, although we are indeed planning my wedding, we didn't find it particularly helpful. Being a atheist/agnostic combo who live in the Godless wilderness that is San Francisco, and who are planning a nontraditional wedding, we were at sea with this book. The book carries several assumptions which are not true for myself and my partner, which made the tone (of course your wedding will be deeply religious/spiritual, of course you wouldn't want people diminishing the sanctity of the ceremony by drinking alcohol during it, etc.) a touch off-putting. It is quite lengthly, and written in a slow, thorough style which would suit many readers quite well, but I found hard to scan, and the lack of an index made it difficult to find specific info. I think this book will be fine for many folks, especially those who are religious, but it didn't serve my needs.

I loved this book even though I'm not the intended audience at all. The author is a Christian pastor, we are atheists. The author says you should hire a professional officiant, we had my aunt do it. But we just basically ignored the preface and found the rest of the book very useful!She explains each part of the ceremony very clearly and includes a lot of wording options. Some are spiritual, some are secular, some use flowery language, some are plainspoken. Of all the websites and books I checked I did not find better wording options anywhere.Reading through all of the options was really helpful to see what things we absolutely did not want, vs what resonated with us. In the end, we started with a base of her words, and changed them or re-wrote parts until it felt like our words. This book gave us a really important foundation to build upon, and that was just what we needed.

This book proved extremely helpful as my now-husband and I were having a friend officiate our wedding and so we were starting from scratch and had to build our ceremony from the ground up. We ended up taking some of the passages from the book and personalizing them to add our customized flair. We received so many compliments after the ceremony (I'm sure this is in large part to how well our friend officiated!), and I know the well-written passages added so much meaning to the event and were different than a cookie-cutter ceremony.

This book is very helpful when planning a wedding. I created a draft for the bride and groom, and loaned them this book with some samples selected so they could pick and choose for what worked for them. This helped and also inspired them to know what they really wanted. I'd recommend this for an officiant or a couple who is not sure what they want yet but they want to ensure the ceremony is meaningful to them.

As a wedding officiant, I have purchased many ceremony planning books over the years. This has become my "go to" book, especially for couples who want a more secular (rather than religious) ceremony. I recently purchased the newest edition in the Kindle version, which cimes with downloadable pdf files of the example verbiage for different parts of the ceremony. This makes it easier to email suggestions back and forth to the bride and groom. I can't recommend this book more highly.

A couple of years ago, my niece asked me to officiate her wedding. She waited until 6 weeks prior, but I could not turn her down.I had never done one and I had no idea what to do!This book helped me through a very stress-filled time buy giving me a wealth of information.Some of the people at the wedding actually thought that I was a pro because of the attention to detail.A few months ago, my daughter was engaged and asked if I would perform her ceremony.Once again, this book is off of the shelf and on my desk.Best of all, I had e-mailed Dr. Johnson a question today and I had my answer from her within hours!

I could never have performed my first wedding without this book! The happy couple and I poured over all the magnificent choices for wording, agenda, tone, who-does-what and selected those things that were appropriate for the kind of wedding we had in mind. We added our own touches, but without Judith's abundant and loving information, we'd have been lost! Turns out the wedding was very very sweet -- tears of joy all around!

I found this book extremely helpful. We also needed a ceremony without any God references, and this got us 95% of the way there. We mixed and matched sections, revamped a couple sentences that still included the "G" word, incorporated personal vows and readings and - ta da - a personal ceremony with just 2 evenings' work.Our most frequent compliment from guests was how personal and meaningful the ceremony was. "A two kleenex-er", according to one guest. Most importantly, it was meaningful and sacred for us, and 100% true to our beliefs. Well worth the effort.
