Whenever I encountered them, they were the backstory or window dressing of another story. For example the legend of Robin Hood centers around Richard the Lionheart being held for ransom when returning from the third crusade. I knew there were several crusades but not exactly how many. I knew some of the main characters like Richard, Eleanor of Aquitaine when she was Queen of France, Saladin and Suleiman but I did not really know how they all fit together. I knew there was seriously messed up stuff involved like the Children’s Crusade and the crusaders sacking Constantinople, their own ally. In Distant Lands A Short History of the Crusades helped fill all those gaps in my knowledge of an incredibly complex subject that continues to have relevance even today.Mr. Brownworth begins the book by explaining which characters go with which crusade. I found that extremely helpful. So many of the names are not familiar, like Alexius I Comnenus, who was the emperor of Byzantium and whose request for help set the first crusade in motion. The book then lays out the logical order of events that created the need for the Byzantine emperor to seek help from the Roman Catholic Pope. He also then shows how events spiraled out of control until there was absolutely no hope of stopping the disaster that followed.The book does a wonderful job of balancing events and people. The significance of the events, what led up to them and what their consequences were are all told in a very readable fashion. At the same time the people involved in the events are discussed in a way that gives them depth and life. Nothing happens in a vacuum and the author does a great job of illustrating the people who created the events.Joe Barrett did an excellent job narrating In Distant Lands. His voice is very pleasant to listen to. He enunciates clearly and the production quality is excellent. He never stumbles on any of the foreign words whether French or Arabic. I would not hesitate to choose another book he narrates.In Distant Lands has kindled an interest for me in this period of history. I have two other books picked out for my next trip into this time period (God’s Wolf by Jeffrey Lee and The Templars by Dan Jones). I will also be looking into more of Mr. Brownworth’s work. I found In Distant Lands to be very accessible while not oversimplifying a complex subject.

I learned more about the eight crusades in Lars Brownworth's popular history of this subject than I have in any academic course I have taken. Outremer and the Levant were thoroughly explained so that the reader can visualize the rather complicated geography of the eastern Mediterranean coast in relation to the Crusader States. I thought the Cast of Characters was a reference tool that was easy for the reader to return to time and again as he read the book with its multitude of central figures from popes and emperors to Prester John and Yolande. Last but not least, is the Epilogue which Brownworth treats with respectful provocation and a timely analysis. A highlight of the book!

Fantastic book, the author is a great storyteller, does not have a single boring chapter, which is amazing for a history book. I read it in two days, very captivating stories with lots of fascinating people and details. I will read all Lars Brownworth books, he rocks!

As a novice on this subject it was easy and entertaining to read and easy to follow the story. Some interesting interpretations at the end iro Christian vs. Muslim perspectives. Well worth the read.

This is a good introduction to the Crusades.

Jam-packed with information few readers would know about the Crusades. It is truly a concise history course on the subject from the perspective of all sides.

Truth is better than fiction. Brownworth makes history come alive in an epic fashion . rather than read stories u can read about the real events but not in the dry boring way its some in schools

A disappointing book. The "interviews" don't sound real. Real people just don't talk the way the subjects are portrayed as talking - with ready made canned philosophies that happen to coincide with the author's own (self satisfied and uncritical) view. Sometimes they even coincidentally use the same hacky phrases the author uses in her own faux-thoughtful ponderings. The prose style is nearly unreadable too. Very high school paper-ish.It's a really good idea for a book though. It would be nice to see it re-done in the hands of a more honest and less artless author.And it's not like there isn't a lot of interesting stuff in the book. I just don't trust it - and it's a slog.

This book helps us understand how confused the elitist tendencies of the art establishment have made the world of art. But it is also misleading - because the topic is NOT the "Art World". Ms. Thornton covers only that segment of art that she enjoys - then claims it’s exceptionally important. She also fails to be a neutral writer or ethnographer.This book is not ethnography. Ethnography involves a disinterested observer (or observer with a pre-existing opinion taking an intentionally neutral position) and going into an environment with people to study their interactions. First, and foremost, to be valid ethnography it requires that the writer describe how the specific population segment they study relates to other populations.It’s also not ethnography in that it’s mostly record of interviews - interviews that don’t add much. That it’s reporting isn’t surprising - her career has been spent reporting. But the claim to be much more is specious.Ms. Thornton does admit in her afterword to the later edition to being an enthusiast for contemporary art - and seems incapable of understanding or explaining where contemporaray fits up against a much, much larger world of art and set of artists. (I suppose it was a great sales tactic though for hyping up the book and getting it bought by a publisher.)She also fails to sort out how to observe neutrally - no matter her opinion. Many of the characters she’s with assume persona’s of "edgy" while truly being pretty mundane - a fact she misses. She also fails to see (apparently) that they are rehashing essentially the same things that have been made for nearly 70 years...that little of the theories postulated by the collectors, critics, or artists are “new”.The writing covering the first two days is quite compelling and I enjoyed those parts (tho’ frustrated by her inability to be an ethnographer). The remaining 5 days were pretty dull writing - but I wanted to make sure I read through each of the events. I suppose her “studio visit” was most hilariously odd. It wasn’t a visit to a studio - but to a factory with the tour given by the CEO. Yet rather than search ethnographically to understand and give insight to this variation, she wholeheartedly embraces the CEO.As a last thought, she is fascinated by art that has the approval of this elite crowd - it’s the art she embraces. What strikes me is that she seems to lack the interest and enthusiasm for art that doesn’t have that approval - art which probes the depths of the human and expresses what’s essentially human. Certainly we could all argue about what makes something to be art and never resolve that question - because everyone answers the question differently. But this fact is what is so sadly missing from this book - the only important question in the true world of art.

This book was just okay...nothing terribly interesting about it. Overall, I enjoyed the chapter about the Christie's auction the most, as it seemed like a very entertaining "show". The chapter called "The Magazine" was so boring and esoteric that it was virtually unreadable. The rest of the chapters were alright, with a mix of interesting and mind-numbingly dull sections....(a bit how I feel going to a modern-art gallery itself). I did expect to learn more about the art world than I did in this book, so it ended up being fairly disappointing in that respect. The saddest aspect of all is that I had a suspicion confirmed...the art world at this level is controlled by the rich and elite, so it's just another big corporate business! (Just read the chapter about the "artist" Murakami and you'll see what I mean).

This book is an ethnography (the writer as participant/observer) about the art world. Its message about art as a commodity and the art scene as a performance piece in itself came as no surprise to me as my husband is an artist. At one time we lived in New York and he was represented by a New York Gallery. When you read this book you will understand why we moved back to Alaska. Being an artist in the art world is like wearing a sign on your back that says 'hit me' or else feeling like you're some kind of wind-up toy that must perform in a set way.The book is divided into seven chapters, each elucidating one specific aspect of the art world. These chapters are:The Auction - About a Christie's big-time auction in New YorkThe Crit - About an art criticism class at CalArtsThe Fair - The Basel Art Fair in SwitzerlandThe Prize - The in's and out's of the Turner prize, awarded by Britain's Tate MuseumThe Magazine - About Artforum, an art magazineThe Studio Visit - Takeshi Murakami's studio and his work as an artist and entrepreneurThe Biennale - The Venice Biennale (or Studio 54 revisited)The commodification of art along with the hierarchy of dealers, collectors, curators and artists is in place all along the art feeding chain. While it was no surprise to me, it edified the sad state of the affairs in the art world. This book was written during the economic and art boom so the situation has likely changed along with the expendable money available to hedge fund founders and the general public.I was amazed to find out that one can not just buy art. Dealers like to choose who they will sell art to - they want art to go to an A-list collector and often collectors get on line to buy a piece of art by a particular artist. Production often does not meet the needs of consumption.If you are interested in details of the art world, you might enjoy this book. If you're easily jaded or have a weak stomach, I'd skip it. It goes into all the gory details of every aspect of art, from the artist who produces the work on up (or is it down)

What I’ve Done is a mysterious riveting tale that will have you glued to the pages. Once I started this book it was so hard to put down. I stayed up half the night reading it because I just had to see who the killer(s) were, how Haley faired through the entire ordeal, what Sharp’s outcome would be and how Morgan and Lance’s romance progressed. There is a lot going on in this book to hold your interest and keep you invested in the story. It is full of fast-paced suspense with a lot of action and many twists and turns. The more Morgan and Lance dig for answers, the more questions pop up and the more deadly situations become. It also contains a few serious hold-your-breath moments where you will be on pins and needles hoping for a good outcome for the characters. For me, it was pretty much hard to quit reading; I just had to finish it all at once.All the main characters are back in this installment and are just as wonderful and solid as in the previous books and the story is well-written and engaging and will leave you wanting more. I really enjoyed the sweet moments with Lance and Morgan and her girls and the subtle romantic tidbits with Morgan and Lance. I liked that there was a romantic touch throughout the story but it did not take away from or overwhelm the overall read with unnecessary relationship drama. There was just the right touch. It was nice to see a snippet of Sharp’s past and learn a bit more about him, though I was a little sad for him in the end with a particular outcome. My heart went out to Haley and her mom with the whole ordeal they had to go through and it was a nail-biting experience waiting for all the evidence to be revealed and the truth to come to light. This was a great addition to the Morgan Dane series and I look forward to more.*I received an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

No spoilers, but I will say...FINALLY!Once again Morgan and her dynamic duo, Sharp and Lance find themselves embroiled in a complicated murder investigation where there client might be crazy and nothing is as it seems.The story is mostly fast paced and the characters are well developed with just enough twists to keep you guessing until the end. I like that these stories don't end up with fairytale endings; just because some of their suspects don't end up the killer doesn't mean they're good people either. In fact, there's one psycho jerk I half expect to pop up in the next book.Can't wait for number 6!

I really like this Morgan Dane series -- full of suspense (because it is not always obvious what is going on); the H/h (Morgan and Lance) remain intelligent, compassionate and human, too; and the plot is fairly realistic based on our world today. Ms. Leigh poses ethical dilemmas for the characters who do not always come out untarnished. The setting makes sense; the police are not always evil; and the secondary characters stand out. I might just have to go back and start reading the Scarlet Falls books and wend my way back through Morgan Dane -- that is how much I enjoy these books.

I love this series. Morgan Dane is a defense attorney who used to be a prosecutor. She is the mother of three wonderful, fun, busy little girls and is a partner with two private investigators. Lance Kruger and Lincoln Sharp are the two PI’s, and Morgan and Lance are romantically involved. These characters are amazing, and the mystery in this book is enthralling. Even though I didn’t like the murderers, I never guessed who they were are what else they were guilty of. I did not stop reading until the end...which I absolutely love!

Another great book by Melinda Leigh! Completely wonderful. It's the fourth installment in the Morgan Dane series but can be read as a standalone. However I recommend reading the whole series because it is f-ing fantastic! Plus you get a lot of background knowledge on the main characters and are able to see the character growth of each one. I love Melinda Leigh! There isn't a book that I've read by her that I haven't liked. And I've read them all with the exception of the currently released new novella.I really enjoy her books and am always looking forward to the next one. Her books are so good that they are a mandatory pre-order for me. The way she writes is so easy to read and there is absolutely no confusion. There aren't so many characters and different storylines that you can't keep up. Morgan, Lance, and Sharp find themselves caught up in a whopper of a case in dangerous situations. A new character was introduced - Olivia a reporter - and there is some kind of unknown, unexpected attraction between her and Sharp. I'm hoping to see more of her in the next book because she is such a great character. I'm hoping there's a future for her and Sharp.The reason I haven't given details about the book in this review is because I don't want ti give anything away. I feel even a summary would be too much. It's better to just experience it without any kind of info. However know this. This book is superb and of course I recommend it. Great job Melinda! You always prove why you are one of my favorites with every book you release. You are also prove what a fabulous author you are!

I love the Morgan Dane series. Morgan is asked by her friend Lincoln Sharpe to defend a friend of his daughter Haley Powell who has been accused of murdering someone she knew Noah Carter. Morgan along with both Lance and Lincoln set out to prove her innocence. The more that they investigate the more that they learn that maybe Haley did not commit this murder after all. That maybe the person or persons who murdered Noah also might have murder two other victims too. As they continue to investigate and the closer that they get to finding out the truth. There are several attempts on their lives. And of course so many twists and turns. I found myself turning page after page and saying one more chapter. As I did with each of the previous books in this series. This is book 4 in the Morgan Dane series it can be read as part of the series or alone

I've known about low-carb diets since I was a kid in the 70s and my parents went on the low-carb "Atkins Diet," but I've avoided them because I love carbs (who doesn't?), but earnest to lose 40 pounds at the age of 56, I started to investigate the role of insulin in weight gain and Dr. Jason Fung's The Obesity Code proved to do an excellent job of driving home several important points between the role of carbs, insulin, and weight loss.For one, Fung gives us a narrative to show that doctors were making the claim that too many carbs led to obesity as early as the 19th Century, but these claims were eclipsed by the non-scientific Eat Low Fat, Watch Your Calories Diet, which Fung shows does not work. No amount of willpower can fulfill the expectations of a low-fat, low-calorie diet because carbohydrates high on the Glycemic Index stimulate insulin and high insulin results in two horrible things: fat storage and constant hunger.Fung makes it very clear that lowering one's insulin mostly by eliminating all processed sugar and carbs and eating in their place whole foods one can control one's appetite, which goes off the tracks when one eats breads, waffles, pancakes, pasta, etc. This research is also supported by Dr. Robert Lustig, author of Fat Chance.The book does not offer extensive prescriptions for daily amount of carbs or detailed menu plans, so I read some other books on achieving a state of ketosis for weight loss, and what I find is that the prescribed carbs per day tends to differ. For strict "orthodox" ketogenic, low-carb champions, such as Amy Ramos, author of The Complete Ketogenic Diet for Beginners, the amount is usually a mere 20-50 for the "first phase" followed by a maintenance level between 75-100 grams. However, some authors, such as Michael Matthews, author of Bigger, Leaner, and Stronger, say one can eat as many as 150 "good" carbs a day, or even more for some. By good carbs, I am referring to carbs from whole foods, not processed flour and sugar. Some authors, such as Amy Ramos, will say you can't eat quinoa, sweet potatoes, beans, or legumes of any kind, but other authors, such as Michael Matthews, are less dogmatic on this point.From reading The Obesity Code, I would suggest one experiment to find the right carb threshold and correct mix of ingredients since Dr. Fung, Dr. Lustig, and others seem to differ on this point.Additionally, I'd say one should experiment with the sweet potatoes, quinoa, beans, and legumes. If one isn't making weight loss goals with these ingredients, then take them off one by one.One point that Fung makes that is in contradiction with a lot of nutritional advice I've heard over the decades is that snacking is usually a bad thing because we are constantly stimulating our insulin. Fung observes that the low-carb craze of 2004 sank, not because low-carb diets don't work, but because the snack industry got involved and created all sorts of low-carb snacks, including chips, protein bars, and other snack foods, and this constant snacking kept people's insulin at a high level and brought in too many calories.Fung seriously examines the benefits of long durations between meals and encourages eating only 3 meals a day, and even fasting every now and then. However, he is not dogmatic. He points out that if one must snack, one must be careful to focus on whole foods and not processed "snack foods."By focusing on the role of insulin and showing that "being fat makes you fat" because a fat person is in a constant state of high insulin and high appetite state, Fung has made me very mindful of the carbs I put into my body. Highly recommended.Update:I've been following The Obesity Code, eliminating sugar, gluten, potatoes, and rice, for the last 6 months, and I have lost 50 pounds. My neuropathy burning pain in my left foot is 100% gone. I'm a believer in this book, and I will be adhering to it for life.

THIS. This is just simply amazing. It might not be for EVERY SINGLE PERSON OUT THERE but it works for a lot of people and I have seen it with my own 2 eyes. I myself have really struggled with major weight fluctuations ever since my first pregnancy back in 2007. Before I got pregnant I was 119 lbs. At the end of that pregnancy I was 175 lbs. About 2 months after giving birth I managed to get back down to 120 lbs but it was short lived. 2 years later, within about 3 months my weight skyrocketed from 120 lbs to 170 lbs!!! That was the summer of 2010. Between 2010 and 2014 my weight just kept fluctuating between 175-190 lbs. I ended up getting engaged and wanted to lose weight for the wedding. I started at 190 lbs and worked my butt off in the gym, counting calories, drinking nothing but water, working out some more, cutting more calories, etc. By the date of my wedding I managed to get down to 165 lbs. I was literally working out every single morning for 1-2 hours jogging on treadmills, using the elliptical, lifting weights, doing squats, etc. IT WAS HARD. and the second I stopped working out my weight slowly started to creep back up. Working out every single day is not a sustainable way to live for me. I had a goal of getting to 140 lbs and it seemed not matter how hard I was working out or how well I was eating my weight would not budge from 165 lbs. Fast forward about 5 months and I get pregnant a second time. I was 165 lbs in the beginning of that pregnancy and by the time I went to the hospital to deliver my daughter I weighed in at 216 lbs. After having my daughter my weight dropped to 205 lbs but would not go any lower. I would lose a couple lbs then I would gain a couple lbs and so on. I was soooo upset with the way that I looked and felt. A lady I work with had just read this book and talked me into trying it. I ordered the book right before Christmas last year (2017) and read the whole thing in a matter of days! Anyone who knows me personally knows I HATE reading but I just could not put this thing down. New Years Eve I had my last unhealthy meal, pizza and a glass of chocolate milk lol. I started my first fast New Years Eve night at 9 pm and did not eat again until the next day at 6 pm. I would continue to do random fasts, always changing it up from 16 hour fasts to 20 hour fasts to 18 hour fasts, etc. and would continue to eat low carb/ high healthy fat foods. My starting weight on New Years Eve was 205 lbs. Today, just under 6 months later, I am at 160 lbs! And that's with ZEROOOOO exercise! Literally just eating low carb with intermittent fasting I am down 46 lbs. It's amazing. It's easy. And I will live the rest of my life telling people about this book and will live the rest of my life eating this way. And don't get me wrong, exercise is very important and I will be incorporating it into my daily routine very soon so I can firm up, but the fact that I lost 46 lbs without even going on so much as a nightly walk is just beyond amazing to me.

I stumbled across Dr. Fung while researching about fasting on youtube. This book gave me more head knowledge and ammo to continue on my weight loss journey!!Update: From January 1st up until October 8th, I have lost a total of 40 lbs using the same principles that Dr. Fung outlines in this book. That is a pound/week and zero exercise or diet products were involved in my transformation. I know a picture is worth a 1000 words, so let me show you progress.Update 2/14/19: I posted a current photo of myself to let everyone know where things stand 2 years later. I know often times people lose weight and within a short period of time it creeps back up. However, I have gained a total of 10 lbs back since I fell off the low carb/fasting wagon in 2018. My husband and I bought and renovated our first home in 2018, so it was a very stressful year. I moved away from the low carb diet in 2018; however, I still continued eating only at dinner Monday-Friday. Often times that dinner was carb heavy like pizza, burgers, Mexican food, ect… We wont talk about how bad my eating was on weekends :) I'm actually shocked, but the bulk of the weight stayed off. Since things have settled down for us in 2019, I am kick starting again with Dr. Fung's advice and have set a goal weight of 140 lbs by July 2019 and this time I will include exercise with my fasting routine.

As a person who had been brainwashed by the public education system into believing that evolution was a "fact," this book, in layman's terms, deals with complex geological and genetic issues in a simple way to show that there are features in the geologic strata which defy scientific explanation. For example, limestone formations which are hundreds of feet thick with a chemical purity of 97% with no corals or sponges within them as you would expect if formed in shallow coral reefs. Modern fossils found in ancient strata. Massive over thrust layers wherein the top layer is much older than the younger layers below - geologists cannot explain them, but a massive flood and geologic disaster can. Carbon 14 is supposed to completely decay after 100,000 years, yet carbon 14 is found in diamonds and coal - which are supposedly millions of years old. Regarding DNA, geneticists cannot identify a single instance in which a new chromosome or gene has been created with new useful function. In virtually every case genetic change results in a loss of function, not a gain in new function. The universe could not have created itself - something cannot come from nothing. When the most basic reproducible cell is explained, it is impossible for it to have been created by random chance. Hear this - the most basic reproducible cell contains 134 proteins, each protein consisting of 300 amino acids, each amino acid is a a left-handed amino acid (in all living things) which left and right handed amino acids are created and bond together equally easily; DNA is needed to properly order the amino acids and a cell membrane is needed to prevent the water in the "primordial soup" from washing away the amino acids. The odds on that happening randomly are equivalent to us firing a hand-sized rock into space, having it hit a satellite and have the satellite fall back to earth and land in the bed of a speeding truck. The Bible says that God created the animals according to their "kinds," and that appears to be accurate. All in the same family, and are inter-reproducible, are the wolf, dog, dingo, fox and coyote. Yet, an archaeologist would think he had discovered 5 different species. Archaeologists insist that birds evolved from dinosaurs because the collagen found inside a dinosaur bone matches most closely with a bird. Well, in my view they are correct, they descended from an ancient pterodactyl - a BIRD!!! Micro-evolution is a proven fact, the family of wolves, dogs, foxes, etc proves that, but all it proves is what the Bible says in the first place - God created the animals according to their kinds - what we could call "families." This is an excellent read and I am much more open now to a much younger earth, a God-created universe, earth, original life, and families of animals. One last point they make in this book; while it is true that humans share 95% of their DNA with a chimpanzee, so what, humans also share 60% of their DNA with a rat. This book is an easy to understand science book and will challenge the brainwashing schools do to kids with teaching evolution as a fact. I am now a creationist after reading this book.

This 2nd edition of Roger Gallop's book, evolution - The Greatest Deception in Modern History, has all the charts, illustrations, photographs, diagrams and well-organized chapters as the original edition, plus some updated, and additional content in the Prologue, Chapter 3 and a few other sections. As before, this is a great resource for everyone who would like to learn more about the staggering wealth of scientific evidence in support of Divine Creation and the remarkable lack of scientific evidence in support of the theory of evolution. Dr. Gallop should be congratulated for putting together such a high quality, easy to read, scholarly review of the key issues surrounding the creation vs. evolution debate. A must read for everyone who would like to be better informed about this important topic.

One of the best book that I have ever bought. It is deep but you can still under stand it. You will learn a lot about the joke of evolution.

I am not a scientist, I am a student. Throughout my life evolution and an old earth were presented to me as incontrovertible facts. I don't have the knowledge or ability to verify what is related in this book, but neither do I have the capability to verify the science I have been indoctrinated with. This work presented other possibilities that I must contemplate, and for that reason alone it was a worthwhile read.

This book gives amazing insight to the geological and biological processes of our Earth and the life contained in it. It is not written in a self-righteous, morally superior tone. This book is simply and concisely written, and explains Creation in a scientific and accessible way.

This book is a MUST read! It is captivating and compelling...and covers all the bases! This book disproves Darwin's theory of evolution beautifully. Dr. Gallop clearly shows that evolution is a great deception....and scientific laws and evidence are perfectly consistent with creation. I encourage anyone who questions what the world tells you regarding evolution to take the time to read this book. It will most certainly challenge your views and help you find the truth. I highly recommend it!

Fantastic information debunking evolution. It should be read by every high school student in America to help them decipher observable science from "belief" about the unobserved past. There is no scientific reason to believe in Darwin's silly fairy tale
