I was glad to receive this, and found it to be very interesting.I have long been a fan of the Boeing B314 Clipper, and had heard about the long ordeal the crew sustained in their supposedly "routine" flight to Hawaii - but it just happened to coincide with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In fact, they were actually on their way to Hawaii when it happened, and they were flying right into the thick of it, and had to make some emergency plans, so as not to let that valuable plane fall into enemy hands.Without any maps of the areas they would have to fly over, entailing thousands of miles, and keeping total radio silence, and without any guarantee that they would even be able to find aviation fuel as they attempted to accomplish this Herculean feat, they just bobbed and weaved and made it work out, to fly virtually around the world to get back home. To say nothing of the fact that it was a seaplane - with no ability to land on anything but water, and they were faced with thousands of miles over very hostile territory, over dry land, they were between the proverbial rock and a hard place! As if they didn't have problems enough already, they had to remove all identifying insignia from the plane, to attempt to foil being identified as American, and either shot down or forced down by enemy planes, should they encounter any. And, the Japanese were actively hunting them, because that plane would have been a supreme prize of war, to have captured it.A tribute to their perseverance, determination, and sheer guts, to have pulled it off.Highly recommended.

If you are a fan of aviation tales, this one is up there. You have to like the genre. This isn't lit-fic. No one has a great epiphany. There are no cackling villains or dashing heroes. All the action and excitement of World War II is miles away. In other words, it's like most real life adventures but extra fun because airplanes. And, it's not just airplanes, but a flying clipper, a great luxury liner of the air trapped behind enemy lines by a rising new empire. The crew has to navigate carefully. Their ship would be a prize for the new empire. Meanwhile, the old empire, under attack, is nervous, possibly nervous enough to shoot down a civilian liner if it shows up in the wrong place at the wrong time.Well, that's what the story was about. Their route home to the US takes them south through New Zealand and Australia, along the edge of the war in southern Asia, through the Mideast and then across Africa. That was the old British Empire, and some of it was right out of Monty Python. Some of it was more Graham Greene. Again, this is not great literature, but it's a fun aviation story. If you like aviation stories, you will enjoy this yarn. If our modern air travel system has spoiled it for you, don't bother.

Some pretty amazing flying machines were produced in the 1930's that, except for aviation historians, have been largely forgotten. The Pan Am flying boats are one example of this. I didn't know that Boeing had produced a 4 engine behemoth flying boat prior to reading this book. This story describes how the crew of one of these flying boats had to return to the United States from the other side of the world when the war with Japan broke out. They could not fly the standard return over the Pacific ocean, because of the threat of attack by the Japanese. So they flew westbound from New Zealand, via Australia, India, the Middle East, Africa and South America in order to finally reach New York. Very little of this route had been charted for commercial air travel, so it was up to the captain and the crew to do all the planning and navigation, sometimes using ordinary maps or nautical charts intended for sea going vessels.Besides giving a good description of the flight and the problems that were encountered and resolved, it also gives a very good description of the Boeing B-314 flying boat, with many interesting photographs of its interior and exterior features, including the flight deck where the pilots, navigators, engineers, and radio operators performed their duties. The author, Ed Dover, had flown as a crew member on other Pan Am B-314 flying boats, so he has an excellent understanding of the situation that was faced by the crew in this extraordinary war time flight back to safety. I think this enabled him to translate his research and personal interviews with members of the crew, particularly Capt. Ford, into a realistic sounding crew dialog as the events unfolded. He could have just documented what happened, but by acting like a fly in the cockpit, his "imagined" dialog makes the story more riveting.I can recommend this book to anyone with an interest in aviation history, particularly the grand era of the 1930's and 1940's.

I came across this book while searching for material about the PanAm Flying Boats. It's a very well researched piece that is written in, for the lack of a better term, a unique style. The author begins by introducing the crew and setting the stage for their incredible (if not impossible) journey back to the states taking the LONG WAY AROUND after the Dec 7, 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The saga begins in Aukland, New Zealand after the clipper completed its regularly scheduled flight from San Francisco. The reader settles in to what he or she thinks is going to be a typical 3rd Person, Past tense expository and when the reader gets used to reading this style, Mr Dover literally jumps into a 1st person, present tense style. When I read the first couple of pages of the shift, I was skeptical at first and thought I had purchased a pig in a poke, but after half a chapter, got sucked right into the cockpit, cabin, and places the crew took that flying boat back to New York City with virtually no support or finances on the journey except for what they could beg, borrow, or steal!I couldn't seem to put the book down and told anyone who would listen about Capt Ford and his crew. It's a wonderful read that I would hope that whoever is reading this review would consider giving it a go. If you can get by Mr. Dover's flowery words, you won't be sorry!

I remembered this book from my son's childhood and decided to reorder it since I could not find my copy. We originally had the paperback which is how I remember the illustrations. The hardback copy has reformatted the images such that the borders cut off some of the illustrations - or to me it looks as if they have. The illustrations look cramped. It takes away from the relaxing ambiance of the book. I'm picky about artwork so I will be ordering the paperback as well which seems to have a larger frame for the illustrations.

This is one of the most wonderful bedtime books ever. Soothing and reassuring. I miss reading it to my daughter. There is a short prayer at the end blessing all the sleeping creatures in the world.......can easily be skipped if that's not your thing.

I bought this book for my son because I had an old ratty one for my 15 year old daughter. I used to read it to her all the time when she was little and we loved it. So when my son was born I knew I wanted to get him his own copy.

I adore this. Same author as "Goodnight Moon" but is more pleasing overall in my opinion.

I wasn't expecting it to be an old library book . Strangely enough our post person jammed it in the mail box (instead of bringing it to the house) The pictures are lovely and the wording is like a lullaby. I like Margaret Wise Brown's books.

This book is simple, but lovely. No question why it won a Caldecott award. Simply story easy for young children to follow. Good use of color and artwork to illustrate different parts.

Good book

This is a beautiful book to read at bed time. Sweet pictures. Children enjoy reading it too. I recommend to anyone with kids.

Tastefully written about a place and a time when little girls were given away as brides to far away kingdoms and husbands and peoples they had never met, this book is poignantly beautiful . It reads more like a poem than prose. The simplicity of the vocabulary underlines the simple, hard truth about a glowing little princess child who must face her destiny while still so very young. That fact is repeated in the child's simple words: "I am a child with my hair yet cut across my forehead". Still wearing bangs, not old enough to sweep her hair up in exotic dos. The mystery of how she smuggled the secret of silk out of China ( a secret that had been kept for 5,000 years, and if revealed would mean certain death for the lawbreaker) becomes secondary to the heart and mind of the Red Butterfly. The artwork is as clearly delineated as the story. There is little that is extraneous here, which emphasizes that what you are viewing is elemental to the theme. The artist's work is carefully balanced in his frame, and the story is carefully balanced on the fulcrum of the child who is faced with the loss of all that she loves on the one hand and her sense of duty and destiny on the other. The reader and listener can sense the tension in the child who must obey, and accept with grace, the requirements of her royal station, and confine her emotions within. In her world emotions are never allowed to overwhelm. Love is second to duty. The artist has captured the seething emotions in the characters facial expressions, but it is accomplished with subtlety in the position of the eyes or the slight tilt of a chin.My granddaughters related completely with the child and understood her situation. They responded with sympathy and compassion. They readily understood that a child must do what a parent says. But they could not comprehend how the parents could send away a child they loved so much. This is a great book for children to gain understanding of a different time and a different world. It should be read with an adult to explain the different cultural values that required such personal sacrifice.

This is such a great book for children. It features a strong and sympathetic heroine, and also provides all kinds of opportunities to teach children, through pictures and poetry about other parts of the world, and historical periods. The words are wonderful, and the illustrations beautiful. We were given this book as a gift, and I've read it hundreds of times to my 5 yr old daughter. We loved it so much, we bought it for a baby shower gift for some very good friends of ours who had a baby girls. The story is that of a young princess in China who is preparing to be sent away to marry a wealthy and powerful prince. She smuggles silk out of China using an ingenious method - in order to take a little bit of home with her on her long journey.

Lovely story and incredible illustrations.Perfect for a preteen or anyone who enjoys cultural significance of having to leave home to go on to marriage.

Beautiful story with exquisit illustrations. My granddaughter loved it. The book was in excellent condition. I don't have anything else to say as this was a gift for my granddaughter who loves stories about China. THe book came in time for her birthday.

It is beautifully illustrated but the choice in how the story was told was just very odd for a children's book. I thought it was just me so I gave it to my husband to see what he thought. He thought the illustrations were fantastic but agreed with me on the story. We read it to the kids since they are the real judge...they both asked for us to put it down. Sorry, we were super excited to read this story because of the legend (which is fascinating) but the book was not for us.

Based on a Chinese folktale, "Red Butterfly" is a beautifully-illustrated story about a young Chinese princess who is getting ready to leave her beloved homeland in order to marry the King of Khotan, in Tibet. She is sad that she has to leave all that is dear and familiar to her, and decides that she will carry a living reminder of her native land, in the form of tiny silkworms. The young princess knows that it is an act strictly forbidden for China greatly prizes the secret of weaving silk and wants to keep it within China. Will the young princess succeed in carrying out her secret plan? When I chose this book for my daughter (I'm always looking for culturally diverse books for her), I was initially attracted by the lush and vivid illustrations, but as we read the story, both of us found this tale of a young princess forced to leave the comfort of home for an uncertain future engaging and yes, even sad. My little girl asked me at the end why the princes was sent off to a far away place without her parents, and I tried to explain it to her in a manner she would understand ( it is not easy explaining the strict norms of tradition back then in a culture where elders' decisions were not to be questioned). Older readers, aged 7 and up, would be better able to understand the finer nuances of this folktale. Recommended for multicultural collections at home and the school library.

A beautiful book. Can't believe it's only available secondhand.

This book was better written than the last one. Tho story line was thought out better and the characters better described. Cully needs to quit smoking as it could mean his demise if fire and smoke are spotted. When I was a young soldier I read many Zane Gray books and Orris Slade has the potential to become another great western writer. I have enjoyed the first four books greatly and am looking forward to number five. Good writing in the future Orris.

The entire Cully series are short, easy to read, fun filled adventures. Read them all. A good "no brain" book as my wife's says. We had some snow for a couple of days and I read all 4 books. Please write more of these.

I enjoy short stories that can take the project all the way through from conception to completion well written very well thought up without redundancies definitely a winner, N

Good read, fun and active. I am enjoying the character, Cully, more and more. I will keep on reading these books and see how it goes.

I read all 4 books about Cully the Bounty Hunter and really enjoyed them. I hope Mr. Slide continues this series on a regular basis.

I enjoyed this book as, I've read and, enjoyed all of the other books about Cully. I recommend these books to everyone. Happy reading

And again'the author "done good:" Lots of quick turns and exciting action'You Read! You Like. Much!"(Your Friends Will too!)

I've been reading these books since Into the Wild published. I was disappointed with how the last two series went. The living-dead cats from Hell that walk on Earth as though they never died and killed warriors in their sleep Freddie-style wasn't flying well with me. It was too far-fetched even with the book being about talking cats. I was so disappointed I wrote a review on The Last Hope stating I wouldn't read this series unless they brought back the realism the Erin Hunters had in the first two series. And here I am, three books into A Vision of Shadows and this is by far my favorite series. Not only have they introduced characters with complex personalities which we can relate to but the writing has changed. From throwing in filler dog chases and fox fights scenes to actually continuing the plot as it started. Uninterrupted by the same chase I've read in the other books, I can read without feeling like I need to skip pages to get back to the plot. I'm actually nervous I might skip over something if I do that with this series. It's a fantastic read for teens and adults. It is very dark. It makes The Darkest Hour look soft. If you have younger children I suggest reading the books first yourself. This way you won't get caught off guard by your child asking questions on how the cats in the book are being killed or why.*My review for the book is done but for those who like spoilers or reviews of the story line continue reading*Again, warning, spoilers. I honestly thought Darktail was related to Scourge somehow. It seemed like the story was leaning that way with his blood obsession and passive-aggressive controlling behaviors. The change in the story with Onestar admitting his past and connection to Darktail was a plot twist I never saw coming. I was hoping we would get the chance to see him lighten up a bit. Can't wait to read the next book.

Wow. Just wowI love Erin Hunter's writing. Its so unique and different from other writers. I mean the cliffhanger in this book makes you think "well that was a good end to the series." then you realize "Wait that was only the third book!" I mean this book is just the beginning! And now it's like the first book!(did that sound weird? It sounded better in my head.)Ok. Now I'm going to get into detail. WARNING if you did not read this book lol I away NOW!!!!!Ok. So I liked the book a lot! I mean I stopped reading this so I could read Wings of Fire (also by tui t Sutherland; one of the authors of Erin Hunter's group)so I come back not remembering anything at all and all of a sudden the clans start battling the rogues in the shadowclan camp!!!!Skyclan came back from the dead! I mean it was inevitable that it would happen but you think of skyclan as old fairy tale legends really. So now this is going to be a spoiler. It's my least favorite part of the book needletail probably died 😫😫😫😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

My daughters love these books. They’ve read the entire series and are now highly distraught to find themselves with no more Warriors books to read. One daughter literally screamed when she realized we couldn’t order the next book off Amazon because it wasn’t written yet. I understand “Erin Hunter” is a pseudonym for a group of writers. If there are so many of you, please write faster and end my daughters’ anguish. ;) Also, keep up the good work!

Another good Warrior cat tale in tradition with the previous books. Though originally written for children or YA audience, I believe anyone who loves cats, and fantasy like I do, will enjoy all of these books.

I never would have dreamed that I'd still be as taken with the Warrior cat clans through a sixth story arc, but it's happening, and this phase of the overall story is blessed with characters I can't help but care for, who grow and change as the result of a misfortunate rebellion comes to pass...and the young cats involved in it face choices that will affect more than just themselves or their own Clans.

(Spoiler alert)I am a huge Warriors fan. I have been reading them for many years, and I have read every single one. This book is amazing, probably one of the best Warriors books yet. It was quite a shock to learn that Darktail is Onestar's son, and the story behind it is heart-wrenching. Definitely the best book in A Vision of Shadows arc, and, in my opinion, one of the best Warriors books ever written. I am eagerly awaiting the releasing of Darkest Night, A Vision of Shadows book five, and River of Fire, a Vision of Shadows book four.

One of the best of the Warriors books -- hated to reach the end. My heart broke for Hawkwing in "Hawkwing's Journey"; he lost everyone and everything dear to him. So I was very happy when he and Twigpaw found each other. There is so much action in this latest Warriors series, really the best since the original six books. And the new covers are beautiful.

My daughter loves all the Warriors books! And there are a ton! She was equally enthralled in this tale as well as all the others and read right through to the end in a matter of just a couple days!
