I couldn't put this book down once I started reading. It's great. It's awesome. It's thought-provoking. Buy it. Read it. Do I need to say more?OK. A short summary:The story follows two separate plot lines that converge near the end. The first follows Jack Greer and a team of scientists as they drill near the Yucatan Peninsula to try to reach the remnants of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.. As they reach 1500 feet, they drill into--something--and an incredible white light is seen throughout the world. After receiving assistance from the US Navy, they go down and find a huge spaceship, shaped like a diamond. Needless to say, they are blown away. They get in the ship and try to find its purpose? Did the ship kill the dinosaurs? Did it arrive afterwards to help life get started again? If so, how and why did they do that? Finally, where did the aliens go?At the same time, Mia Ward, a doctor of genetics is trying to solve a genetic mystery. It seems that the burst of light is making some people sick by somehow altering their DNA. Her scientific world is at a loss to explain this and she spends the book trying to solve the mystery. There are some people that don't want anyone to find out about the ship, so Mia flies around the world to consult various experts, and is constantly being followed by people trying to stop her (kill her).Jack and Mia finally meet up once Mia finds the data she needs. Once they exchange information, we learn about a possible alternative to our common belief of how life evolved on earth. There is a lot of science and genetics that you may have to read twice, but it is well worth it. I love reading about alternatives to common beliefs because...what if? What if makes things more interesting. The book ends with a cliffhanger that comes out of left field and leaves you with a sense of, "Oh no. What have we gotten ourselves into?" Luckily, the sequel is already out!Highly recommended.
This novel was a heavy mix of good and bad. It was certainly entertaining and made for compulsive reading. The story was full of information regarding genetics with a few assumptions on historical events and periods and, most importantly, it was a thrilling ride. However, the plot had tremendous holes everywhere. For instance, a character is trapped in a room with her bodyguard holding off intruders outside the door. The next chapter, she is in another country without explaining how the entire team had extricated themselves from the dilemma. At another point, a man is killed in a holy place with the team members the only witnesses as to what had happened. The next we see of these people, they are in another country without it being explained how they were able to avoid being held by law enforcement. I admit that these explanations would have slowed down the plotting, but they are necessary. It is as if the author came to a full stop before the hurdle, then just walked around it. I will be reading the next volume, due out this month, simply because the storyline was pretty riveting.
Very thought provoking, entirely plausible with a great story populated with interesting and complex characters. I really hope we see more of Anna in the future. Extinction Code is a page turner that will keep you thinking about the questions raised long after you have finished reading it. A big thumbs up.
Don't start this if you have to go to work early the next day! I literally couldn't put this down & spent all weekend reading! I immediately got caught up with Jack, Mia and the other assorted characters. As they raced to find answers while coping with strange new technology/concepts. There were several twists thrown in that kept this from being just another predictable book. I enjoyed the "What if" factor since there are too many things we have yet to understand about DNA or disease. fortunately the book left room for a sequel ... I can't wait to find out what happens next!
I've been reading SF for 55 years starting with the masters of the golden age. So today I find it hard to find science based books as it seems like everything has vampires or wizards in it. I tried Prescott's book because of the plot reflecting some current science. This book has a good science underpinning and adds secret societies, alien guidance of human evolution; all the basic food groups. It's not Ringworld or Rendezvous with Rama but it was a good read and earned Prescott a second chance with book two now about 45% done as of today.
Extinction Code caught me from the very start and kept me enthralled throughout. I had to reread to get more fun, since I can’t wait for the second installment!I found myself pleasantly educated, happily carried away with plot excitement twists, and invested in the characters’ survival while I lived their experiences with them. Thank you and I’m excited more soon is arriving! Hooray!
reasonably imaginative but spoiled by the poor writing - full of stock characters who are barely one dimensional. I wont be buying beyond the first book.
Having read and enjoyed Genesis Conspiracy, I had very high hopes for Extinction Code, but I wasn’t expecting to be totally blown away by it. This is an action packed technothriller with a well-researched premise and masterfully told by a writer who clearly gets better with each book he publishes. The story hooks the reader from the very first page and a wonderful cast of characters take us with them as they discover and explore a mystery that has remained hidden for millions of years. This story is written in the best traditions of Rollins, Riddle and Reilly – there’s not a dull moment throughout and it is very difficult to put down.I’m excited at the prospect of reading more from James D. Prescott and highly recommend Extinction Code to fans of the genre and thrillers in general. A great read!
