Review
“Subtle, spellbinding . . . Sontag said she wrote Illness as Metaphor to ‘calm the imagination, not to incite it,' and On Immunity also seeks to cool and console . . . [Biss] advances from all sides, like a chess player, drawing on science, myth, literature to herd us to the only logical end, to vaccinate.†―Parul Sehgal, The New York Times Book Review“By exploring the anxieties about what's lurking inside our flu shots, the air, and ourselves, [Biss] drives home the message that we are all responsible for one another. On Immunity will make you consider that idea on a fairly profound level.†―Entertainment Weekly (Grade: A)“On Immunity . . . weaves metaphor and myth, science and sociology, philosophy and politics into a tapestry rich with insight and intelligence.†―Jerome Groopman, The New York Review of Books“A philosophical look at the history and practice of vaccination that reads like Joan Didion at her best. If you are yourself a nonfiction author, your initial response to this book might be to decide immediately on another line of work; Biss is that intimidatingly talented . . . .This is cultural commentary at its highest level, a searching examination of the most profound issues of health, identity and the tensions between individual parenting decisions and society.†―The Washington Post“[An] elegant, intelligent and very beautiful book, which occupies a space between research and reflection, investigating our attitudes toward immunity and inoculation through a personal and cultural lens.†―Los Angeles Times

Anyone who is expecting or has small children should read this book. Not to say that those of us without young children should ignore the debate on vaccination. Eula Biss has a wonderful writing style and her research is excellent. A quick read at only 163 pages, well worth the time.
A good read, giving insight to our fears and feelings about immunization, the risk and social benefits compared. It does not force a conclusion but causes the reader to explore their own values, while providing history and knowledge to reach a decision.
Written as though a poet, sociologist, historian, and immunologist collaborated to produce the truth -- physical and political -- of immunization and vaccination. Informative, often counterintuitive, and insightful.
I recommend this to everyone. Such a great book.
Great book...
Very well written and there was a lot of information I did not know.
Got it on time, no problems!
Which ever side of the vaccination issue you are on, please read this book! Eula Biss gives us a candid view of her struggles and fears as a new mom- not only about vaccinations, but about many other issues as well. She writes clearly and in a most engaging fashion about her thoughts and anxieties. This book is a good example of the journey being more important than the destination.
Very timely book. Ms. Biss has extensively researched the topic as well as make it a very personal story weaving in her own experiences, dilemmas and doubts surrounding this public health issue. Highly recommend this book to all parents - as well as those interested in the public policy debate surrounding immunizations and pandemic preparedness.
