This is the book that was used for the graduate level Thermodynamics class that I took. Like most textbooks, it isn't perfect. In this case, it is pretty lengthy, in fact it is 880 pages long. But it has a lot of black and white figures that are of high quality, and the individual pages are also fairly small. Bejan likes to take a few paragraphs here and there to explain things about thermodynamics research history and other relevant events in science and engineering history to explain how some of the fundamental thermodynamics concepts were originally contrived. Some of you will take interest in this, since this discoveries do indeed constitute rich history. For example, he talks about how as recently as a few hundred years ago, people thought that fire was essential for getting water to boil, because they just didn't know anything about thermodynamics. On the other hand, those of you who are looking to grasp the concepts of thermodyamics as quickly as possible because you are cramming for an exam or trying to get the homework done, or for those of you who want a quick reference book for thermodynamics, you may get frustrated with Bejan's looser, less technical/concise writing style.If you are taking a course that requires this book, and are concerned about what I've said, I would recommend that you consider getting another book in addition to this one that is more concise to use as quicker reference when you are in a hurry and getting impatient with Bejan's writing. If you are on a tight budget, you can even buy an outdated copy, and it should work fine. Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics by Moran and Shapiro is one that might not be quite as advanced as this book, but it can help you to get through the basic and intermediate concepts of Thermodynamics more quickly than this book. The Moran and Shapiro book is currently on its 7th edition, so just go get the 4th or 5th edition, and it will be cheap for you.If you are taking Thermo right now, best of luck!!!

Written well enough on a very complicated subject. But I do wish that were more over-arching connections between the sections of each chapter.

Not all topics are easy to understand. Some are very advanced and some elementary topics are not included because you know them first before you read this book. Do some research on this author to gain more insight.

In our graduate level course, we were forced to use this terrible book. The committee, for some reason, approved this book even if the professors dislike it. The book problems are very wordy and the book does not contain all the information to complete the problem. After much outcry of my classmates, our professor decided to drop the book. We now use our professor's notes and problems.Please choose another graduate level textbook.

Used for graduate level work. Very confusing book. Not clear, maybe ok for mechanical engineers but not chemical engineers. Purchase at your own risk.

The book has too many printing omissions. For example, 'thermodynamics' reads 'the mod nam s' at many places and so on.

Its a textbook. So the subject matter is blah. Easy to navigate though.

Disclaimer, I live in Sedona & know the author, Debra Beck.I wanted to read this book as a friend of the author and as the Mother & step Mother of several now adult girls! I thought that this book really addresses the many issues facing teen girls & gives teen girls great information and tools to navigate through the difficult teen years, empowering them all the way.I was kind of blown away reading the book, as there were several sections that opened up my eyes & helped me learn about myself! A great read for any parents of teen girls & for Adult women to read for the 'teen girl within!" Great job Debra! Well done!

Debra Beck does a great job teaching young girls how to love themselves. It is not that empty, shallow and selfish love but the true love based on confidence and hard work.This book talks about important topics that many books dealt with like drugs, sex and eating disorders, as well as, refreshing topics that I enjoyed having introduced to my daughter such as finishing projects, stress reduction and health maintenance and how they are related to confidence and self appreciation. Ms. Beck also provided short journals that help young girls search and understand themselves; well done!

A nice guide for adolescenses who are strugling in this wonderfulbul confusing world. I have given this book to several of my students and they have enjoyed it and learned how to be better.

Easy to read, helped my daughter understand things I was having trouble conveying.

There are many examples in this book which would have helped me out immensly when I was young. In particular, not doing something when you are uncomfortable about it. Also, the fact that everyone is unique and we should celebrate our differences, not try to be like some else so they may like us. Kudos to Debra!

I bought this after seeing Arrival in order to read the short story on which the movie is based (Story of Your Life). It was one of those rare occasions where I'm glad i saw the movie first and the book was a great accompaniment to what I saw on the screen. It really exposed a whole other layer to the story and filled in the blanks in a way that was complementary to the movie. Quite different from the movie in how it's told and in some of the details, but worked well. Sort of like two friends telling you about the same event from their individual viewpoints.

This is actually the first set of short stories I've ever read. Bit of background, I have a deep aversion to short-story collections, especially if it's by a mix of authors. Feels like eating a couple of potato chips and nothing more: frustrating. And indeed, that colors my review just a bit, both overall and also on a number of individual stories in this collection, but more on that later.OVERALL REVIEW: the collection is excellent. This actually feels a bit like reading a collection of Black Mirror episodes; each story is a sort of runaway exploration of a singular "what if?" concept. In fact, each story is written in a distinct style, especially impressive since these were written over the course of many years. Several are in first person, some are told in a distant, omniscient 3rd person, one is told in a confusing 1st and 2nd person narrative. Some are distinctly emotional and colored in vivid emotional tones, some are distant and cold and detached feeling. The stories run the range of ancient, Biblical settings to late 19th century, to modern day, to near future. But overall, this collection of short stories feels satisfying in the sense of each one being standout.Now I'll give short reviews on each individual story, spoiler free:TOWER OF BABYLONThis takes place in ancient Babylon, and is ostensibly historically accurate; all the place and people names are real. But this story centers around these ancient people improbably building an enormous tower to heaven, to LITERALLY open the vaults of heaven. The story is told from such a mechanically sound and realistic sense, with so much detail, that as the reader, you're more than willing to set aside some disbelief and go with the premise. The twist to this story is actually just as mechanically mindful as the rest of the telling of the story was, and despite the nature of it, I found it oddly satisfying and quaint.UNDERSTANDThis story, like Tower of Babylon, and most of the stories, starts out on solid footing before shooting into the sky. The premise is solid and instantly believable in today's world of medical breakthroughs, and involves a patient being brought back from a vegetative state with an experimental drug. But the drug results in some unexpected side-affects ... Ultimately, I found the ending to be bizarre and just about senseless. It's one of those endings that makes me wonder if I'm just too dense or slow to read into it enough to be blown away. That said, the author's literary style during the telling of the story is spot-on, perfectly illustrating through narrative structure the rapid changing of the character themselves.DIVISION BY ZEROThis is one of the less fantastical stories in this collection, but still uses a specific narrative design to tell a story both literally and figuratively. Of course, this story is also about math, one of my weakest areas, so much of the story kind of flew over my head. However, one of the two characters is not a mathematician, so this creates an opening for some exposition for the less versed readers. In the end, the story is not as much about math ... and I sort of got the ending to this story, but it's one of those things where it would probably help to discuss this with a reading club or a literature class to tease out all of the layered meanings.STORY OF YOUR LIFEThis is the short-story that is inspiring the movie "Arrival". It's also one of the more interesting and mind bending stories, since it switches narrative styles constantly, and involves flashbacks. Essentially (without spoilers, but this helps first-time readers), there are two time-lines: the main story, in which communication occurs with aliens, and various flashbacks. Making this more intriguing is that the main story is told in 1st person, but the flashbacks are told in 2nd person, in a strange sort of future tense. There's a reason for this, be assured. The eventual ending is emotional in a way I didn't expect and left me wondering about the implications set up. I look forward to seeing the movie version of this, because, like several of these short-stories, this deserves a full-length movie and/or novel adaption.SEVENTY-TWO LETTERSThis takes place in an alternate reality version of late 19th century / early 20th century England. It's hard to say, because the central premise is that the world is built on using combinations of the Hebrew alphabet (a 72 letter combination) to invoke a "name" to induce certain magical qualities in things. I know what I said must sound stupid, but like all of these short stories, the author sets this up in a way that is well grounded, logical, and believable enough for you to set aside disbelief. The author also does a fantastic job of adopting the type of language, slang, and style that would be appropriate for a story told in this time era, making it that much more immersive. That said, I thought the ending was too sudden and weak and like the central conflict was barely resolved.THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN SCIENCEThis is the shortest story in the collection, and is written in the style of a magazine article. Thus, it's also only a dozen or so pages in length. Therefore, this functions less like a story, and more like a bit of open-ended speculation on the author's part. This makes this entry the weakest and least satisfying in the collection.HELL IS THE ABSENCE OF GODThis is one of the more fantastical and imaginative stories in this collection. It's heavy on the religious speculation, but not preachy by any means. In fact, I liked this story for it's rather interesting and almost darkly comical depiction of a real-world Christian God and his angels. I can't say much more without spoilers, but suffice to say, I rather liked this story. The ending feels trite and odd, but I think I kind of understood it in the context of the rest of the story. And the author's narrative style is perfect, taking on a detached but wizened sort of air, like that of a classic parable or fable.LIKEING WHAT YOU SEE: A DOCUMENTARYThis story is told in a faux documentary style, like the sections are transcripts of recordings taking from various people being interviewed, along with a few news broadcasts and speeches. There is no back and forth question style here, but more like someone was asked to give their full-length thoughts on something and the story here is that. It actually works pretty well for the premise, which is that a neural implant is developed which deprives people of the ability to recognize facial beauty. This is actually based in true observational science of people that have suffered a brain lesion in a particular part of the brain that controls this. Anyway, the idea is interesting, and explored evenly from both sides of the issue, as to whether such a technology is good or bad. This is less a story and more of a work of speculative, train-of-thought type of story, but it's still very satisfying as a work of fiction.---Overall, I recommend buying this collection of stories. I'd love to see a few of them optioned as TV shows, movies, or full length novel adaptions (beyond just Story of Your Life / Arrival).

I got Ted Chiang’s “Stories of Your Life” because I saw the movie “Arrival” which is based on Chiang’s “The Story of Your Life” which is included in this volume. I admit I cheated and went straight to “The Story of Your Life” and when I read the rest of Chiang’s stories I found them as fascinating, innovative and as challenging as “The Story of Your Life.”Since I did jump to “The Story of Your Life” it approaches its subject, aliens making contact with humans deftly. Chiang makes the aliens, alien, not some anthropomorphic proxy that is supposed to be representative or illustrative of some human characteristic. Chiang is a writer who takes both aspects of the phrase science fiction seriously. The challenge of Louise Bank in “The Story of Your Life” is to find a way to communicate with the aliens, called heptapods. Chiang is well-versed in semiotics. In other stories Chiang very well distills mathematical theory (“Division by Zero”). However, he also doesn’t shy away from fantastic scenarios such as in “Hell is the Absence of God” which posits what the human race and faith would be like if God was a known entity and angels frequently visited earth or at least the physical plane and what their effect on life and lives would be, as well as the effect on faith.The stories included in “The Stories of Your Life” are so unique and exciting to read I was ready to recommend the book even before I finished “The Story of Your Life.” I’m glad I stuck around to read the other stories as well.

This is a hard one to review. First, I bought it after seeing and enjoying the movie. The movie is adapted from one of the short stories in this collection. First, the author is extremely inventive when it comes to fashioning novel situations or "could be" worlds in these stories. He then plays that novel situation out over the course of the story. I am very disappointed with the quality of this coloring book. I was getting this for my mom and my sister to share because they are obsessed with the new coloring craze and they both love birds. The quality of this book is terrible. I can't believe I even paid for it. I'm almost positive I could go to any craft store (or Dollar Store) and find a better quality book. The only positive of the book is the pages are very high quality (i.e. if you like to use gel pen or fine tip markers) and the ink won't bleed thru. But other than that, there is nothing good about this book. There are a total of 25 pages worth of coloring material (all of the coloring page designs have a blank back except for the first coloring page that has a line for you to put your name on). There are hundreds of different species of birds and the book only focuses on a couple breeds (i.e. tons of owls and humming birds). As far as design goes, the pictures look very pixelated. It looks as though the drawings were originally much smaller then expanded just to fit the size of the page. (Similar to finding a small picture on the internet, copying and pasting it too Word/PowerPoint, expanding the photo then realizing the bigger picture is fuzzy. Sorry if that is a little confusing, it's the only way I knew how to explain it.) There is also no consistency between the design of the birds. It's very visible that there were at least five different designers to create the drawings found in the book. Now I know what you're probably thinking, "isn't having different designs a good thing?" Not so in this book. Some of the designs look like they were designed for little kids while others look professional. Some are easy while others have such intricate designs even my sister who has good eyesight can't do. Also, the title "BIRDS" really does mean just birds. The designs are only of birds. No flowers or scenery, just birds, despite what the cover may have you believe.I really hate to write bad reviews for products but this was worth it. The quality of coloring books that you can find at your local craft store are much better than this and a better price as well! Don't waste your hard earned money on this!

The cover is very deceptive. You think the book is full of scenes similar to the cover, but instead, there are single cartoon-like birds (pelicans, toucans, storks, parrots) on a blank white page. There are 3 pages out of 25 that I MIGHT enjoy coloring. Most pictures are highly pixilated, and they look like they have been taken from a clip art and blown up bigger. Had I'd been able to see a couple of the coloring pages, I would not have bought it. I would not consider giving this to an adult to color.

The book is fun to work with, but when they put it together, the pages were installed backward. Instead of turning the page and seeing the bird on the right, they are on the left... not to big a deal. Also their use of black can overwhelm the design. Still fun.

Didn't like the pictures, they are goofy.

Each page has one bird - seems very simple - more like for a child.

Very dissapointed in both of the books I have just received mainly the bird one if I had been able to veiw the inside I would not have bought this. The printing is blurred and in other places the design is crowded

With references to recent current events, people and debates, she illustrates how Ingersoll's words and arguments are still relevant. Susan Jacoby's THE GREAT AGNOSTIC reveals Robert Ingersoll as a freethinker who saw no difference between an agnostic, as he was dubbed, and an atheist. He claimed that no one knows whether or not God exists; believers believe it, and nonbelievers don't. He didn't believe it. The term "agnostic," which dates back to 1869, may have been coined (probably by Thomas Henry Huxley) to separate honorable American nonbelievers from the pejorative connotation of the much older term, atheist. In any case, "agnostic" in Ingersoll's time didn't seem to carry the noncommittal connotation it does today, because Ingersoll was quite vocally and cheerfully a nonbeliever.Jacoby's short, scholarly, hypnotically readable biography of Ingersoll recalls him as a happy man. He became famous as a 19th century American orator, and people flocked to hear him because his talks were so good humored and entertaining. Both believers and nonbelievers enjoyed his talks, and only believers who took the Bible literally (fundamentalists today) hated him.Ingersoll was not like many nonbelievers of his time, who subscribed to a "social Darwinist" theory that certain classes of people are superior to others. Ingersoll's father had been an abolitionist preacher, and Ingersoll championed human rights--including workers' rights, women's rights, and children's rights. He detested corporal punishment and dramatically spoke out against it. He was far ahead of his time.He was a happily married father of daughters who grew up without a religious education, but who learned to read the Bible as literature. He was well-read and proud to be an American. He revered Abraham Lincoln, and he resurrected Thomas Paine from obscurity. Among his friends were Henry Ward Beecher (a Christian preacher and the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN) and Mark Twain.Jacoby has done a wonderful service to readers everywhere through her portrait of Ingersoll--whom I previously discovered in her 2004 bestseller, FREETHINKERS. What a marvelous experience it is, in the politically divided American society today, to discover a great 19th century American, Robert Ingersoll.--Kirsten I. Susan Jacoby sets out to -- and in her afterword advises "new" atheists to work tenaciously to -- restore Robert Ingersoll to his rightful place in American history. In two hundred pages, she makes a compelling case. Ingersoll was not only a champion of freethinkers, he widened the field for religious moderates and everyone who prefers a secular government and public sphere. And he lived an interesting life in interesting times.My only criticism of this story is that American freethought during the end of the 19th century seems very isolated. Jacoby has called this period the Golden Age of American freethought (in Freethinkers as well as here); it was also the golden age of British freethought, and the two traditions were in regular contact with each other. One example would be contraception, which Ingersoll advocated on the basis of women's right to control their own bodies. It wouldn't detract from Ingersoll at all to acknowledge that freethinkers advocating birth control had a long and important history on both sides of the Atlantic when Ingersoll took up the issue. Of course you can't do everything in 200 pages, but in her letter to the new atheists, the author calls out to readers of some contemporary British atheists such as Dawkins and Hitchens. Perhaps there would be less need to re-establish these ties across the water if we knew more about the ongoing transatlantic interactions between people like Thomas Paine, Richard Carlile, Frances Wright, R.
