This wonderful book takes the best vibes from movies like "The Big Chill", mixes it with a fantastic second chance romance, nd adds the finishing layer of sweetness by having so much of the story resolve around cake.The plot is layered well, with the mystery of Maddie's disappearing act, mentioned in the blurb, revealed gradually, with hints along the way. Meanwhile, the chemistry between the leading ladies is depicted superbly, even when Justine is, justifiably, still furious with her ex-girlfriend for leaving her without a trace ten years earlier. I appreciated that the story was told entirely in the present, with no flashback sequences to the time they were together or when Maddie left used as shortcuts. While that kind of thing might have made some of the reveals about the past easier, it would have felt like rushing the character development, which was such a huge part of what makes this a great story.In the end, the best way to sum up my experience with this book is this: I decided to read a couple more chapters when I went to bed Saturday night and when I stopped reading I had finished the book... We won't talk about what time it was... Highly recommended!
There is something that is consistent with a Clare Lydon book, it will be well written with characters who draw you in, there is always a touch of humor, and last, she writes hot love scenes. All of that plus a terrific plot is what you get with Maddie and Justine. These two were the perfect couple for four years entail Maddie ran away. Now ten years later their lives cross and what is going to happen? Justine is still very hurt that Maddie left her with no word. Maddie admits she made a big mistake back then, again what is going to happen?This is just a good book, you will not be sorry to press the ‘Buy Now’ button.
Please, please, please learn when to use “X and I†and when to use “X and me†in a sentence. It’s not that hard. Simply remove the other person and the correct term is clear. “Gemma stared at Maddie and I as we danced†Is obviously incorrect if the sentence becomes “Gemma stared at I as I dancedâ€. Or rearrange the sentence. For example, “nobody could keep Maddie and I away from each other†may look correct to you but a rearrangement to “nobody could keep I away from Maddie†shows it’s not.These and other grammatical errors detract from an otherwise well written and entertaining book. They jar and draw attention away from the story. At least, they did for me, which is why I can’t give this book five stars.
I'm glad I read "You're My Kind". Clare is one of my favorite writers, and she always puts together a great story. I love second-chance romances, and the baking theme was really cute. The characters are likable, although I admit that there were moments when I wasn't a big fan of Maddie.I probably enjoyed this book less than most people will. For some reason, first-person fiction never makes me happy. I can't explain it; it's probably some sort of genetic defect. I figured if anyone could make me like a first-person story, it would be Clare, and she almost pulled it off. Love the story -- just wish it had been third-person, like most of Clare's books. Still, if you're a normal person and don't have my fingers-on-chalkboard reaction to first person, you'll love "You're My Kind".
Clare Lydon can be counted on to write great stories that will evoke a whole spectrum of emotion from her readers. They will make your heart ache in one moment but have you laughing in another. Throughout it all you will have the warm fuzzies and root for everything to work out for the main characters. All of her books are must reads.
This was a great second chance romance. It had a lot of heart and enough funny moments to smooth some of the heartache. You have to know that this story starts at a funeral so even though it has some dark moments you have a balance that made me laugh out loud and cry. The one thing I can say is this book hooked me so well that I read it in one sitting and could not put it down. Be ready for the kleenex and the need for cake.

You’re My Kind is a lovely story following Justine and Maddie, who are brought together again 10 years after they initially split by the loss of a friend. Clare Lydon weaves together a sweet, at times angsty (but not too much), character-rich tale. If you’re a fan of second chances, lovable characters, a little bit of grief, a little bit of humor, and just a touch of Great British Bake Off, this is the book for you.
I've read many of Clare Lydon's books and she's one of my favorites. Her characters are usually very real and feel like someone you can see yourself having a dinner or a drink with. You're My Kind follows that style plus some.This story covers some heavy topics,: death, abandonment, grief, and fear to name a few. Maddie and Justine both have a brokenness about them that we can all relate to and they have to learn to trust and forgive before they can truly heal and move forward.I highly recommend this read and you will probably find it very difficult to put down. I know I did.
