I was originally reluctant to buy this because of the fear of redundancy, but my fears were unfounded. This book offers an insight into many photos I hadn't seen before, reproduced in a sharp detail that appears as if they were taken last week. From construction to fitting out, to post disaster, the range of photos is quite satisfying. Of course there are the few that are grainy and fuzzy, but they are few. There are also some colour illustrations that leave one nostalgic.If you are looking for a great photo book on Titanic, this is the one. The text is moderate, making this more of a photo essay. I don't read much of the text in these kinds of books because I like the visual, so I can't comment on the text.

This book takes you from the genesis of this beautiful ship right through to the end at the New York Pier following the tragedy. All supported by great informative text and tons of photographs. For the Layout they were going for, it works very well. Sometimes a photograph would overlap on top of another. This annoyed me a bit as I would have preferred an uninterrupted view. Also there were many photos that were very small. For some, I can see that it was necessary as the photo was very grainy and blowing it up would have made no sense as it would have looked terrible that way. Some however looked very sharp and I just wish I could have seen these in the book much larger. Despite these small complaints, it is an essential book as it groups all of these great photos in one place; many of which from private collections and have never been seen before.

Having so many Titanic books in my collection, I was doubtful if this book would add anything new. I went ahead and purchased it and was thrilled. It is a must have Titanic book!The quality of the book is first class with raised silver lettering on the cover and rich glossy pages. The book is filled with many rarely seen pictures of the Titanic which was thrilling to see. The photographs in the book are arranged chronologically which is what really gives this book a feel of stepping back in time. Starting from the laying of the first keel plate and ending with the abandoned lifeboats sitting hauntingly in the Titanic's empty New York Pier, no photograph is left out. As you look through the photos, you can feel the excitement of the building of the ship and feel as if you are at the launch, as these events are covered from practically every angle. What is really impressive is the press tour photographs taken on April 10th in Southampton. Photographers from the press were given a tour of the ship prior to sailing and these rare photos show the actual Titanic's interiors. I had seen some of these photos in other books, but I thought they were of the Olympic. The photos continue on to cover the boarding, departure, heading out to sea and stopping at the ships two additional ports. It is sad to see the last photo of the ship heading out to the Atlantic, never to be seen again until 1985 on the bottom of the ocean.Again, due to the chronological order, the perspectives of the photos make you feel as if you we're there. Each photo is accompanied by information, which is amazingly detailed, offering new information and pointing out things that have gone unnoticed.This book is a must have and should be included in anyone's collection.

She was a real beauty, long, elegant and designed to lines that look just right, even the four stacks (one a phony and no more than an engine room vent) and her raked 250 foot steel tall masts, the high `Canoe" stern like a J-Class yacht; beautiful and doomed. That, of course, adds a poignancy to these wonderful photographs, some not seen by me before, including many of the dozen or so surviving (and tragically, half-empty) lifeboats.Using private collections and official publications to support these many professional shots, the author(s) have produced a beautiful, flattering yet true, book, well explained in very detail captions and text that set out the timing and location of the various stages of Titanic's first, and sadly, her last voyage.A collector's coffee-table enhancing book but also an engrossing read for any ships and seas buff.

It is true what others say: this is the best Titanic picture book that you can buy. Virtually all the photos are high quality and there are plenty of them. Not being able to afford the ridiculously expensive Titanic: The Ship Magnificent, this was a worthy substitute. However, this is more about the imagery of Titanic and doesn't have much in the way of text and almost no story of the people who were on the doomed ship. I count myself as a "rivet-counter" (one who is interested in the physical ship and not the stories of the people) and this was a great addition to my collection. I spent a very long time pouring over every photograph and this now makes for an excellent coffee table book. Highly recommended!

The story of the Titanic from construction to the aftermath of its collision with an iceberg in the North Atlantic on an April, 1912, night is told through the medium of photographs (plus some contemporary publicity illustrations). The construction is covered in as broad a selection of illustrations as I have ever seen, and I would suppose that almost every image taken of the Titanic afloat is reproduced here. For interior views, in a few cases photos from her sister ship, Olympic, are substituted, because no actual Titanic photograph of the desired detail (such as the grand staircase and the elevators) is known to exist.The book is undoubtedly aimed more towards the Titanic enthusiast than the general reader, in that there is no comprehensive narration to tie everything together. But for that Titanic enthusiast, "The Titanic in Photographs" is a nice addition for the bookshelf. Most, although not all, of the photos have been printed elsewhere, but seldom in such a handy, widely inclusive manner. And a general reader would also enjoy browsing through the collection, I believe, as a window in a hundred years ago.

This is the second book I have read by Ben McIntyre (the first was “A Spy Among Friends”, about Kim Philby) and I continue to be impressed. There exists a genre called ‘historical fiction’ in which an author writes a story that takes place sometime in the past, maybe in the same time frame as an important event, or maybe about some important historical figure. There are various levels of accuracy – sometimes there is nothing historical whatsoever other than the story takes place in the past. Or sometimes a story is a reenactment of actual events, grounded in reality and with evidence of significant research. Then there are the books written by masters of the genre who create highly readable, thoroughly engaging accounts of actual historical events that transport the reader into the era and read like the best modern day thriller (Steven Pressfield, Robert Harris, and David L. Robbins come to mind).Ben McIntyre is one such author whose works are at the very top level of the genre. He has the rare ability to turn the results of his exhaustive, stunningly complete research into a book that reads like a top shelf novel but drips with authenticity at every turn. In “Agent Zigzag”, we learn of the exploits of Eddie Chapman, an Englishman with an extensive criminal record who becomes a spy for the Germans but ultimately becomes a double agent run by the British. Despite his past, he becomes quite successful, supplying information to the British, supplying disinformation to the Germans, and earning the respect of both sides while doing it. He is one of the few spies who actually provided information which helped turn the war in favor of the Allies. In fact, one of his British handlers stated that his exploits were so incredible that they were beyond conception for the writer of fiction.The book starts with Eddie the criminal deserting his lunch date by jumping out of a window as the police close in on him, and ends with Eddie the spy encountering that same woman (whom he marries) in a different restaurant after the war is over. In between the lunch dates, he gets picked up by police, gets sentenced to jail, gets collected by the Germans, and learns tradecraft, bomb making, and wireless communications. He is parachuted into England, where he immediately goes to work for the Allies and commences to supply his German handlers with disinformation, perform various espionage tasks, and help in measurable ways to win the war. He even returns to the Germans, survives numerous interrogations, and proceeds to supply his English handlers with information straight from the heart of enemy territory.The text is clear and readable, with proper grammar and structure. It is alive, however, and delivers the story at the pace of the best novel, but is peppered throughout with references to material obtained from MI5 archives, interviews, and other history sources. In fact, the last fifty plus pages are footnotes on the sources from which the material was obtained. If high school history texts were this well written, there would be a lot more historians around.This book is quite entertaining and satisfying, and at the end you will have learned things about the covert side of WWII that you would never have known otherwise. And all along the way you will marvel at how one man can do so many things and live to tell about it. I recommend “Agent Zigzag”.

This is a fascinating spy story from WW II. It's not quite as good as Macintyre's Operation Mincemeat book. But it has some very clever deceptions, cover ups, sabotage and other exploits of Eddie Chapman (alias Fritz, alias Zigzag).Eddie was a British citizen, rough Soho neighborhood criminal and safecracker. His capture and imprisonment on the British isle of Jersey coincided with the Nazi takeover of Jersey. Not wanting to spend his time time a Nazi jail he offered his explosives and criminal expertise to the Nazis. They took him up on it and after training, sent him to Britian to commit sabotage. He was promptly captured.Not wanting to spend his time in a British jail, he offered his spy services to MI5. He had just been trained as a Nazi spy and had loads of information. The Brits took him up on the offer. He was then trained in British spy techniques (while regularly sending messages back to his German handlers).The whole story is a romp through the double agent spy system during WW II. The fate of Eddie/Fritz/Zigzag is for the reader to discover. I highly recommend this book.

The hero of the book was well dubbed "Zigzag." A minor British crook, Eddie Chapman was being held in a local jail on the Isle of Jersey when the Nazis took over the place. He immediately volunteered his services as a spy against Britain. The Germans finally accepted him and trained him to destroy the De Haviland aircraft factory in England, dropping him by parachute onto British soil. Once he got there, he immediately turned himself in to the authorities and offered to become a double agent against Germany. How they "destroyed" the aircraft factory is a great story all by itself, and Chapman's adventures would make a very good movie. In fact, a rather bad movie was made of it -- Triple Cross, starring Christopher Plummer -- as the studio tried to add little Sean Connery/James Bond touches to a story that was far more interesting than the script. I chanced upon that movie on TV just after I read the book, so I speak from experience.The book is a good example of a Boys' Own Paper adventure (with added sex). Macintyre tries his best to unravel the twists in Chapman's character, but the spy remains just too twisty. However, he does a good job with the supporting players -- Chapman's British and German spymasters, a collection of eccentrics, like the enthusiastic Nazi who was hipped on English folk dancing. Macintyre also has worked hard to separate Chapman's version of things from what actually happened -- Chapman, to put it kindly, liked to embroider. Amazon offers the Kindle edition at a very low price, and it gives good value for the money, since one can reread it as one rereads a spy thriller. This thriller just happens to be true.

Dali is my favorite artist, and I was lucky enough to visit a museum in Spain that had his paintings. In their gift shop, they had the "normal" size of this book for sale in spanish. The book is STUNNING, my favorite!. I decided to get the english version, so I purchased this from Amazon. It is the exact same book, just in a different language. The quality and detail in this book is amazing but I didn't notice how small the dimensions were before buying, I would have never bought an art book that is this small. I bought this book as a gift and the receiver loved it. The book is smaller than I imagined, so it's quite dense and heavy (about 4" width). In fact, if they had made the book larger it could have been a bit thinner. With a book emphasizing images, paintings and sketches, I would have preferred the book to be bigger so we could see the detailing more. Otherwise, it's a very well produced book with a lot of commentary and notes on Dali. 4 stars for book being bigger to see paintings better. Seriously, they're a little small.

The only reason I don’t give this a 5 star is because of the size. Great catalog of Dali’s work but as my wife always says... I just wish it was a few inches bigger. Other then that it’s an excellent catalog of his work

This is a wonderful compendium of Dali's works. The volume is long and inclusive with over 700 pages. It is organized chronologically and by periods (e.g., The Conquest of the Irrational). The reproductions are well done. This version is hardbound but only about 6 by 8 in size. I am not sure if there is a larger size version of this book, if not Taschen should consider it. I have been through the bookonce already, and see myself using it again and again. A worthwhile addition to my library.

I finished reading this book last week. It tries to be encyclopedic about Dali and has tons of his paintings, drawings and photographs. However, it is poorly organized. The written text continuously interferes with our ability to enjoy the paintings that are interspersed between the paintings.It would have been much better if the textual part about Dali and his personal story and history had been told in the form of chapters at the beginning of the book with few illustrations and photographs within each chapter followed by a catalogue of paintings in the second part of the book.Good price.

Did not realize Dali had this many paintings. This book is THICK. Top notch print quality for all images. Overall very pleased with this purchase.

I really like this book. It's straight-forward and very educating for a Dali novice like me. It incorporates his life into the art, but not too much that it becomes a gossipy biography. Just enough to make you understand the artist's experience or state of mind behind a creation. Beautiful as a coffee table book as well.

Much smaller than I thought but chose it for its fabulosly complete information.

I'm a guitar teacher who has been using this series of books for years.Why? They're user friendly, kids and adults love them, and they teach all the essentials needed to learn guitar in a well organized fashion.I'd recommend them to anyone.
